Victorian Wedding traditions are so interesting, especially when analysing how we have carried some traditions, albeit askew from the origin, into contemporary day.
White gowns weren't a tradition until 1840, popularised by Queen Victoria herself. Previously it had been traditional to wear gray or lavender. Weddings were traditionally held in the morning, meaning the reception was usually a breakfast often held at the brides house.
There were often 3 cakes, a fruit cake, a light cake and a dark cake. The fruit cake was for Guests, the light for the bride and dark for the groom. Guests would leave with a slice of cake each., but the brides cake was to be left untouched and put away until the 25th anniversary.
After the wedding, guests threw grain, birdseed or rice over the newlyweds as a symbol of fertility.
It's interesting to see what parts we've kept of these traditions and what we've thrown away. You can see how a lot of it is deep-rooted in religion or old wives tales. Even the dates and months of marriage were important, with June being the favoured month. Named after "Juno" the Roman goddess of fertility and marriage, it was said to be good luck to be married in this month.
