How did Charon become a ghoul in your Modern AU? The curiosity is killing me dead!

He was ghoulified due to continuous exposure to contaminated water in the promixity with nuclear power plants in the area he lives. Rumors about leakage and bad infrastructure were associated with the nuclear technology corporation responsible for running these facilities, but they were often dampened by state government in order to keep business running.

People living outside the exclusion zone (often in poverty) and who drank from the water source didn't always get sick immediately but would later develop malaise varying in intensity. Some eventually died in a couple of years while a minority turned into ghouls with time — which is Charon's case.
