Hydrangeas: True Blue or Tickled Pink?

Our good friends at the Espoma Company have developed a wonderfully informative and colorful post that talks about how to impact the pH of your soil to develop certain colors of hydrangeas.
I think you will really like the post--it is short and not difficult to follow. Plus, hydrangeas are one of the very most popular plants in Skillin's Country so I think this post should apply to many of you!
I love the illustrations, both the photos and a great chart that shows clearly how certain pH ranges impact hydrangea colors.

Daily Dirt: Making a New Vegetable Garden Area
Hello again,
Real customer Lisa asked us this gardening question today about Making a New Vegetable Garden Area. Here is her question and our answer:

"We have a 30 x 30 plot for a new vegetable garden we want to add loam and compost to, to build up about 16 inches on a clay base. What would you suggest the ratio of loam and compost etc.. in bulk at your Brunswick facility?...and do you feel 16 inches is enough on top of the clay?

....But this Spring and Summer will be better! I am posting a picture of a rhododendron from Skillin's Country. Real customer Abigail sent us the picture along with some great questions about how to bring the plant back to peak. Following are her great questions and our response:

"We bought two rhododendrons at Skillins Falmouth last April. Both plants looked beautiful all summer and into the fall. However, after the winter, they look thin and have greying leaves (please see attached image). Is this a normal appearance for rhododendrons in early spring? If not, then, we hope that you can help us pinpoint the problem, and what we might do to help our plants thrive again."

Daily Dirt: Deer are Munching, What to Do?
Hello again,
All the snow in the woods of Skillin's Country have made the vast deer population hungry for food. Unfortunately many of our customers are feeding the deer in the currency of eaten rhododendrons, arborvitae and other juicy evergreens. Deer damage on our plants can take years for the plants to recover from.
If you see deer activity and have some evergreens in the same area, we urge you to apply Liquid Fence spray as the best deer repellant we know of. Liquid Fence, (when applied according to easy directions--let us help you) will last for weeks and is perfectly safe to use in your yard--no problem with kids and pets being around it!
Liquid Fence is available here at Skillin's for reasonable prices and will work well to protect the emotional and financial investment you have in your plants.

Lawn Care Program from Skillin's!
Hello again, Following are some steps any of us can take to help ensure a good quality lawn as part of your home and garden. We believe in natural solutions to lawn care as we do for all gardening. Natural solutions are best for our planet, our homes and our gardens. Lawn care is relatively easy to do and does not cost a great deal of time and money. Let us go over some steps through the year that YOU CAN DO! *Late March, early April--give your lawn a good vigorous raking. As soon as the snow has retreated and your lawn is dry, rake the old debris, sand, twigs and other foreign matter off. This will help remove thatch and debris that might restrain grass growth as well as aerate the lawn. Air and light will also trigger lush growth. All of this helps to get your lawn greening and growing.
Daily Dirt: "Burnt" Rhododendrons (and other Wind Burned Evergreens)
Hello again,
This coldest of winters in Skillin's Country has blessed us with much windburn on many exposed evergreens. This windburn will be most noticeable on broad leafed evergreens like rhododendrons.
The windburn will manifest itself in leaf color ranging from light green with burnt (brown) spots to leaves that are totally brown. The totally brown leaves should be pruned out--they probably will not come back.
In all cases your evergreens (and rhododendrons, azaleas and mountain laurels are at the front of the line) will benefit from a healthy feeding of all natural Holly Tone by Espoma around the base of each plant. Your plants are hungry and a good quality, long lasting food like Holly Tone will enable them to bounce back in a more meaningful way.
This fall ask us too about Wilt Pruf--another natural product that can be sprayed on to coat the plants leaves and protect them from cold winter winds.
Both products can be applied in minutes, are very "green" and will make your evergreens look much greener and healthier for many more years!

First Trip to the Garden Shed
(This is not Terry's shed but I thought a glimpse of summer beauty is never a bad thing. His shed does not look QUITE this good!)
I garden almost exclusively with organic fertilizers and natural soil amendments. Unlike some of the synthetic garden solutions letting these organic products freeze is not a “deal breaker” however my bags of organic amendments have pretty much turned into a solid. Wicked smart of me--but like most guys I have done this before! I wrap the bags in and old piece of blue tarp and with a piece of 2X4 I have carefully crafted just for such an occasion I put on my safety glasses and break it up into it’s fine powder state once again. I really do try not to have “leftovers” in the Fall but it happens. With the knowledge from my University of Maine soil test I’ll work lime and fertilizer into our gardens. There are no pesticides in my shed, in general organic or not they really should not freeze. My garden plan for pesticides is to buy only the amount I need to complete the task. If I have to store pesticides I keep them where they can’t freeze and secured from my grandkids. Now it’s the odds and ends like twine, I use twine all season long. I string it out along my beds so that I can edge out new straight edges, tie up my peppers, tomatoes, egg plants and various perennials when needed. Plant markers, a new blade for my #2 Felco hand pruners and gloves are needed-- I never seem to get more than a season out of gloves! Of course there will be more to my Spring garden needs over the next few weeks but this will get me and my dog going started--although she got we she came for! Terry Skillin Skillin's Greenhouses

Skillins Basic's--A Conversational History of Skillin's
Hello, We are moving the Skillins Garden Log to Tumblr and starting this effort slowly. It makes sense for the first "Tumblr" post to be a history of Skillins that we have published in the past.
As you may or may not know we have been a family enterprise since 1885. We currently are in our 5th generation of Skillin's. Alexander "Pa" Skillin and his brother Charles founded Skillin's way back in 1885. At that time, Skillin's mostly catered to the crowd of people who populated Falmouth and other area estates in the summer. We sold our summer friends fresh cut flowers, garden plants, vegetables and knowing "Pa" we gave away lots of free stories. The business was indeed on the present Route 88 site in Falmouth. Charles soon drifted away to other pursuits but "Pa" stayed at it. I am not sure what “Pa” did year round but I do know he spent many nights shoveling coal into the furnace to keep the cold at bay.
