Daily Dirt: Making a New Vegetable Garden Area

Hello again,

Real customer Lisa asked us this gardening question today about Making a New Vegetable Garden Area. Here is her question and our answer:

Question: 

"We have a 30 x 30 plot for a new vegetable garden we want to add loam and compost to, to build up about 16 inches on a clay base. What would you suggest the ratio of loam and compost etc.. in bulk at your Brunswick facility?...and do you feel 16 inches is enough on top of the clay?

Answer:

Lisa, great question: I usually recommend about 3 parts loam to 1 part compost (I have seen 2 to 1 as well recommended) but our loam is so well screened I think 3 to 1 would be fantastic.

I think 16” depth is okay—try it this year and see how it works—all season root crops like carrots and potatoes could use even more depth but other crops should do just fine. (You could go) Basically up to 3’, the more depth the better as more roots mean stronger plants that will produce more.

Also I do recommend using either Garden Tone or Tomato Tone by Espoma as a great organic fertilizer for your garden plants. Vegetable plants are “heavy feeders”—a good composted soil is a great platform for success, a nice garden food will really help.

Daily Dirt: This Winter Was Tough on Rhododendrons....

Hello again,

....But this Spring and Summer will be better! I am posting a picture of a rhododendron from Skillin's Country. Real customer Abigail sent us the picture along with some great questions about how to bring the plant back to peak. Following are her great questions and our response:

Question:

"We bought two rhododendrons at Skillins Falmouth last April. Both plants looked beautiful all summer and into the fall. However, after the winter, they look thin and have greying leaves (please see attached image). Is this a normal appearance for rhododendrons in early spring? If not, then, we hope that you can help us pinpoint the problem, and what we might do to help our plants thrive again."

Answer:

Last winter was very severe as I am sure you remember (is winter even over yet? :)

I think the rhododendrons will be fine but I will make 3  suggestions.

1. I would feed them soon with an organic plant food called Holly Tone by Espoma (sold right here at Skillins). Holly Tone is a great food to use twice per year (spring and fall) as over time it really benefits the soil. A better soil makes for better roots that will withstand drought in summer and cold in winter.

2. My second suggestion would be to apply Wilt Pruf in the fall to protect the plants over winter. Make a note to ask us about Wilt Pruf this October. It is an all natural product and safe to use as well.

Neither Holly Tone or Wilt Pruf is expensive and it is easy to apply.

3. Lastly, immediately after the plant blossoms give some of the outer branches a quick trim. This will shape the plant and give the roots a signal to send more growth.

Bring us the pic and we can show which branches would be pruned best.
