In which Loki hesitates.

I feel like people really gloss over how absolutely traumatic this must have been for Loki.
Especially since he didn’t really have time to deal with it
Not only was he in the middle of a fight, but a few seconds later Fandral was screaming becasue he had gotten an icycle through the chest
After that Thor got himslef exiled
After that Thors friends tried to press Loki to get Thor back
After that he has a little bit of a breather where he decided to go touch teh cascet becasue who knows … maybe he misremebered

After that, with teh added info that not only was he a frost giant but he also was Laufeys son, a ward (fancy word for hostage from another noble) and also apparently now useles … Odin took a nap

After that the W3 and Sif came to AGAIN pester him about Thor And knowing that to them “No” is not even a suggestion but just a sound that can be ignored he had to deal with the very real posibility that his brother would be taken back to Asgard by the W3 and Sif
-> I assume at that point he had reached the eye twiching stage of I AM FINE!
Which is the reason why at this point he starts to make shity mistakes
He assumes, becasue he knows now the truth, it is inevedable that Thor will figure out the truth
He lies to Thor and tells him that he is banished and that Odin is dead
Well NOW he has to deffinietly keep the W3 and Sif away from him
Also, now he has to deffinitely proof to Odin that he is usefull
SO how about he blows up Jodenheim (after fabricating a reason)?
-> This would have been an awesome moment to sit down and contemplate why exactly Odin had never used the Bifrost to blow up Jodenheim … but I guess he can’t hear his own thoughts over the noise of his eyes twitching and anyway HE IS FINE!1!

What are MCU!Loki's powers?
I’ve gotten so used to fanfic’s versions of Loki’s magical abilities that I thought I’d look at what his canonical powers are. I love it when people augment his powers in fic, but I also kinda like it when stories limit themselves to his canonical powers, which is probably rarer at this point than not. It’s also cool when stories explain how he got the extra powers they’ve given him. But frankly, the movies are pretty vague about what his powers actually are. So here’s my analysis of what he can and can’t do, that we know of.
NOTE: It’s been a few months since I’ve seen THE AVENGERS and even longer since I’ve seen THOR, so I may forget stuff or get stuff wrong. Feel free to reblog and append corrections.

Legit loki didn’t release Hela, once again odin was like “oh shits getting rough? Time to disappear!”
“Oh my son just found out he’s adopted for my own selfish gain? He’s having a full break down questioning his entire existence because i raised him to think his own species is a monster? Lul, time to sleep!”
“Oh, the aether is back? Asgard has been invaded? My wife has been killed? Lul, time to sit here and mope!”

Like, Odin was just the master of yeeting himself out of difficult situations and loki gets the blame for it 99% of the time.

Like, for real?
1) Loki DID NOT ‘fake’ his own death in TDW. He got hit. Badly. Canonically, bad enough even HE thought he was gonna buy the farm. When he didn’t, he crawled his ass back to Asgard.
2) He didn’t steal the throne, either. Remember, he’s in the line of succession, whether Asgard, Odin, and Thor like it or not. Did he, MAYBE do something hinky to get Odin out of the way? MAYBE. We don’t know. Assumptions can be made either way, and even if he did, family trying/succeding in deposing a King/Queen happened ALL THE GODDAMNED TIME here on Earth when royal rule was more common (and less ceremonial) than it is in the modern era.
3) Stripped Odin of his power? Maybe so. But doing that, and banishing someone to Earth … is EXACTLY THE SAME FUCKING THING ODIN HIMSELF HAS DONE. So it is well within the *legitimate rights* of the King of Asgard. So suck it, Thor.
4) HELA WOULD NEVER HAVE HAPPENED IF ODIN WASN’T AN IRREDEEMABLE DICKBAG OF GALACTIC PROPORTIONS. So shut your goddamned face. Loki had NO FUCKING CLUE that shit was gonna happen, and nor did anyone else.
STOP BLAMING LOKI FOR SHIT THAT AIN’T HIS FAULT, GODDAMNIT. AND FOR SHIT HE DID THAT EITHER ISN’T WRONG OR THE SAME GODDAMNED SHIT OTHERS HAVE DONE WITHOUT GETTING BITCHED OUT.
Also Loki didn’t strip Odin of his power-he removed his memories of having said power. He says it in the alternate scene; and in the theatrical scene Odin says that he “broke through” Loki’s spell. He could only have done so with magic; which means he still had it, it just took him a while to remember that he did.
Thor conveniently forgets that the last time he saw Odin in TDW Odin was a literally trying to kill/arrest him and plunge the kingdom into a war. Hela would’ve come much sooner. Asgard could very well have been destroyed even earlier. Thor could’ve been killed or if Odin was feeling merciful locked up, and he never would’ve gone to Earth. But hey forget about all that, let’s all worry about Odin! This is why he didn’t tell you he was alive-for all your “mourning”, you’re never happy to see him when you find out he is.
I think basically this is the crux of the problem- no matter what Odin does-between Odin and Loki Thor will always side with Odin. Even when Odin does stuff to him that he would never tolerate from Loki. Even when he finds out Odin’s hypocritical past he still acts like he worships him. I don’t know if he’ll ever see the new Loki that’s alive right now, but if there’s ever any hope for them Thor has to admit that Odin (among others) did wrong and that Loki did have some legitimate gripes. Otherwise they shouldn’t see each other again.
Hela is only the way she was because Odin groomed her to be that way. Everything she is and does Odin’s fault, she was his daughter and he called her his excursioner. Odin kept everything that they colonized, yet it Hela’s fate was only to be imprisoned forever or killed by her siblings.
So, Loki’s crime is unburying Odin’s dirty past, all while Odin decides to make no contingences or effort to do anything but die and let his sons handle the monster he created. There is no version of this where there is also blame on Odin, because Odin was a murderous colonizer and tried hide it.

To be frank, my hatred for LS aside, I love how in the MCU Loki canonically has attempted mass destruction twice (NYC wasn't him doing it willingly but still) and failed miserably (he did NOT get rid of Jotunheim and his kill count in NYC is canonically... 74 people??? That was a whole-ass alien invasion-), yet the moment he's taking on the role of a savior he's outrunning all the heroes by a mile (practically single-handedly rescued all of the remaining asgardians from the battlefield and quite literally saved the entire multiverse while managing to bring freedom to everyone, something that, as far as we know, nobody has ever managed to do before)(also, if they go with the avenger prime arc in doomsday, and it seems like they could, because there are already so many stars aligned for this, I want to remind you that he is more successful at fighting the villains than all of the avengers combined).
"Loki was born to bring destruction" are we sure, tho? I think the main reason why he has to be the first avengers' villain is because he canonically sucks at being bad and they happen to suck at defeating the villains.
So, pitbulls have the reputation of being aggressive and dangerous, but in reality, these kinds of bull terriers and other dogs tend not to have naturally aggressive temperaments. They have been abused to be violent, not bred, individually abused into being like that, and that tragically leads to a cycle where these types of dogs are taken by people who use and abuse them because of the reputation.
Why am I talking about dogs? Because that's Loki, that's Loki's entire life. He is not instinctually cruel or aggressive. Life shaped Loki, even while he made some bad decisions, bad choices within certain circumstances, they were all within circumstances he had no choice but to be in. When Loki is given freedom to do what he wants, when he is given absolute power over others, Loki is never shown to be cruel, and he never abuses others under him.
The truly ironic thing about the MCU's portrayal of Loki, that he is always shown to be protective of others. Even when they are trying to portray him as foppish and spoiled, they still show him as protective and ultimately, if not outright good-hearted heart at least having no cruel intent. Yeah, What If clearly has more mocking portrayals of Loki, but Jotun Loki still put himself at risk to help a friend of a friend while gaining nothing, and 1602 last actions are to cover and protect Wanda from the danger. That is consistent from the movies, to the series, to the animation Loki has also looked out and used himself as a shield, and in the animation is fully the choice of the animators to make Loki like that.
Loki was born to bring destruction, Loki was born to be the villain is a laughable thing to say when it's also established in the same statement that fate and Loki's role in it is decided by someone else and that fate is enforced with no way out.
The dogs used as pitbulls are not born fight, they have been made to fight, forced to fight. Loki wasn't born to cause destruction and death because that's just what he does, it is specifically because outside forces make Loki do those things.

Ok, this scene really gets to me and invokes my feels. Here’s why-
At the end of the first Thor movie, Loki let go of the Gungnir because he didn’t want to live anymore, not after how the events unfolded for him. His whole sense of identity, his self, his world, everything had been shattered. After Odin’s last rejection, he had reached the conclusion that his life wasn’t worth living. He thought that the void would shatter and consume him, that he would cease to exist. That’s exactly what he wished in that moment, it’s very clearly visible on his face. His face clears of all emotion just before he lets go, it’s him letting go of life, and hopefully, of all his pain. It’s his last effort calm the chaos in his mind and hopefully get some peace. [Excellent acting by Tom Hiddleston, I cannot state this enough]
Now, we all know that Loki didn’t get killed. Instead, when we see him a year or so later, and he looks like a completely different person. Many allusions have been made in the Avengers to the possibility of torture and coercion, and perhaps even mental manipulation via the Scepter. I will leave that point be for now. What I will focus on is the fact that Loki is so reckless. He get’s captured on purpose, knowing full well that he may be tortured for information. He is not bothered about that possibility. Why? For one, he may have suffered through the worst, so nothing that the mortals can shell out will bother him in the least. Fury did suggest torture to Thor. So, Loki deliberately put himself in danger, only to see how strong the Avengers were, and if he could trigger their ire easily. He could have easily eliminated them one by one, taken them out from a distance, opened the portal in the middle of nowhere, etc. But he didn’t do that, he made it a point to make it personal for each of the Avengers. The result: they fought him together as a united team because they all united in their anger against Loki.
Then, nearing the end of the Avengers, Loki deliberately delivers a derisive speech to the Hulk. The freaking Hulk! Who in their right mind provokes the Hulk? Could it be that Loki’s self harming tendencies were still present then? I say yes. He was either hoping to break whatever hold Thanos had on him through the Other, or he knew that he was about to lose, so he chose to pull himself out of active battle, perhaps as an excuse to Thanos. Or he could still be wanting to off himself. After all, what does he have to look forward to? Some sort of gruesome punishment, obviously.
Now cut to this scene from Thor: TDW. He looks so done here. Odin tells him that his birthright was to die, which is possibly the worst thing you could say to a person who had attempted kill himself the last time you saw him. Odin is essentially disowning Loki here and washing his hands off him. Loki was of no use to him now, and Odin simply wanted to bury the nuisance. Loki knows this as well, and it’s why he challenges Odin to simply kill him. He has had enough. Now, traditionally, a trickster and a manipulator should try to seek clemency, to bid his time so that he can get away at the right time. But Loki is saying all the things to Odin which he knows will anger him and will probably make his sentence worse. It’s because he is not seeking clemency or a way out. He is simply seeking an end. He has nothing to lose, so he wants to say what is on his mind, no manipulation. It’s why he is so brash and outspoken. He is 100% done and knows that there is no going back. The only mercy he seeks now is that his painful existence may be ended. He even looks hopeful and desperate for it here.
That is what is so heartbreaking here. He could have said he was sorry, that he was ready to make amends, etc, whatever got him an easier sentence. No, he instead chose to be as offensive as he could manage. Why? He wanted the axe to swing. He wanted it all to end.

Imagine Loki climbing a tree when he was a kid and Thor just trying to get him out of it but Loki climbing higher every time Thor gets close. Eventually they're both at the top of the tree and it turns out Loki is just projecting an illusion and so now Thor is stuck up at the top of the tree while Loki skips home and eats all of Thor's sweets.

I’m not sure I agree Loki ever really wanted the/a throne, even after he discovered his entire life was a lie. The throne is more a symbol or a means to achieve what Loki actually wants at any given moment.
In the latter half of Thor, that’s acceptance and validation from Odin. He works so hard to keep Thor away because, as regent, Loki has the power to defeat the Frost Giants without costing Asgard anything. He thinks that defeating this enemy will prove he’s worthy, and that he belongs on Asgard. That he’s not one of those monsters…
In Avengers, Loki says he wants to rule Midgard, but it seems far more likely that he’s trying to hurt Thor, embarrass Odin, and above all free himself from Thanos. Others will argue that Loki’s trying to lose. Either way, he doesn’t actually want to rule Midgard. At the same time, this is when he begins repeating that he was the rightful King of Asgard, that he was promised a throne, etc. But, again, it’s not the throne Loki cares about, it’s the injustice of being promised something no one ever had any intention of giving him. Being promised his father’s approval, his people’s acceptance, worthiness (or the opportunity to receive it, at least), only to discover that what you are is entirely incompatible with everything you ever wanted. So he harps on about a throne–about that part of the lie–because it allows him to appear detached. He’s much less vulnerable demanding power than he is demanding acceptance, especially when he doesn’t even believe he’s worthy of that acceptance (internalized racism is a bitch).
The deleted scene from TDW contributes to that idea. The fantasy isn’t about ruling or holding power, it’s about the people celebrating him (the way they do Thor). It’s about being worthy. Loki does get the throne again at the end of TDW, but he usurps it because he wants freedom and safety, and he can get that by masquerading as Odin. And even then he offers it to Thor. He might have anticipated that Thor would reject, but he still offered the choice.
Loki protecting/saving others.
Ok, the Jane ones really move me, because he could have very well chosen to stand on the sidelines and watch her die. Instead, he was actively trying to protect her all the time. Like, he could have made a run for it, no one would’ve had the time to stop him. But he didn’t. And this, in no way fits the narrative of a villain or a psychopath.
