there is no one to blame for this . especially not the doctor that now sits in front of him , all emotions reserved and compartmentalized ( grace likes to think he can read it in beck's eyes , even through the dim lighting in this sorry excuse of a room ) . certainly nowhere he can reach . nor does he waste time trying , instead unfocusing his eyes and letting beck check what he needs to check . there are blisters on the backsides of his eyelids , and the pain in his eyes feels closer to eye strain than chemical burns . maybe that's what it's supposed to hurt like . he likes to think that's exactly what it's supposed to hurt like . he's pretty certain he doesn't have any more tear ducts though . the thought of salted tears in his eyes makes him wince .

satoru is not just a teacher. he's not just a dad. he's not just the strongest sorcerer. in addition to the giant responsibilities of those 3 things, satoru is the leader of one of the largest/oldest sorcerer clans still in existence.

when i tell you there are simply not enough hours in the fucking day! satoru could never sleep and he still wouldn't be able to get everything done. he doesn't know "days off". even when he's granted ONE DAY of not being dispatched on exorcisms by JJHQ, he is still a dad, a teacher, and a clan leader.

the gojō as a clan are reclusive and secretive. they participate in sorcerer society on an as-needed basis, but they mostly stick to their "turf" (osaka, japan, and the surrounding rural areas) and keep communication with other clans to a minimum. satoru is their revered leader, the living embodiment of their deity and clan progenitor. he left the nest when he was 17 to attend jujutsu high, but they are still in contact with him at least once a day, sometimes multiple times a day, and if there's any issues he uses his technique to quantum-tunnel to them and handle business.

satoru doesn't show it, but he's chronically exhausted. he really only sleeps 3/4 hours a day, but he never complains.

it's his lot in life, to be Everything. to be a terrifying force, and the first/last wall of defense, to be a good dad and a knowledgeable teacher, to be the perfect clan leader. he doesn't have the option to just be a person.

50% of miguel's DNA is comprised of 12 species of highly and aggressively territorial types of spiders. if you set foot in his cities and he don't want you there, prepare to be hunted and probably killed.

i KNOW satoru implicitly, without a doubt, 1000% trusts nanami kento with his son and his students because he knows nanami feels similarly that young sorcerers deserve to be kids while they're kids. nanami and gojō both went through SHIT in high school. they were both traumatized. for a while nanami doesn't actively participate in sorcerer society, but satoru knows he could call kento for literally anything involving any of the kids and nanami would drop his life and come help. come protect them, or tutor them, or spend some time with them if satoru wasn't able to.

satoru doesn't fully trust many other sorcerers, but he trusts those who grew up with him and were lucky to reach adulthood. he's tired of seeing kids die, and he knows his peers are too.

just breathe with me for a minute. in, out. (satosugu

a mile ahead of his peers when it comes to prior training with his techniques, satoru embodies perfection in his sorcery— sometimes. others, he's just as green and young as the rest of them. not a fully-formed human yet, still learning his innate talents. sometimes, satoru is rendered vulnerable. sometimes, he loses his grip on his abilities, his infinity vanishes because he hasn't the strength left to hold its shape.

what began as a team-building exercise at masamichi sensei's insistence ( that the fresh second years bond with the two, new first years ) has soured into an awful encounter. hard to sniff out if it's a purposeful interruption of their day, but the young gojō had alerted his team of five as soon as he'd noticed— curse users!

the students outnumber the pair of dark sorcerers, but they're older. grown. matured into their abilities, and they know they're fighting children. satoru and suguru split, kento accompanies gojō, and haibara jumps to follow getō and shield ieiri along the way ... but the separation doesn't last very long. having yet to discover the true boundaries of limitless, like all the rest of them, satoru exhausts when he uses too much of his cursed energy.

at a crucial moment, his infinity vaporizes, leaving him wide open and with very little applied know-how to defend himself against this far more experienced foe, satoru is hit hard enough to send him flying.

it scares the first years. of course it does! they've heard their sensei speak on satoru's near infalliblity ( within reason ), heard satoru himself and his two classmates discuss it as well. kento stops dead in his tracks, and haibara shouts in worry but prevents ieiri from running into the middle of a battlefield to assist. gojō crashes, his body rolling and tumbling to a stop. when he does, he isn't moving anymore.

it must be only a minute or two before suguru is with him, maybe shorter. satoru doesn't know. his ears had been ringing with the impact, breath knocked clean out of him to the point that he suffocated. his glasses are missing. shōko has come to his aid, too.

tears of shock roll down gojō's face, not crying, no— but stunned to the point of his body reacting without his say-so. he's in pain. it's awful! satoru has scarcely experienced hurt in his life. he doesn't know how the others can bear to tolerate it.

what's suguru saying..? too many people are talking to him at once now that yu and nanami are here too. six eyes perceives the assailants fleeing, and he wants to say leave me, go after them! but can't choke a sound out past the way his chest has constricted.

suguru has his hand, squeezing it. suguru tells him to breathe. watching him, satoru remembers how. ragged gasps free his ribs from their lockdown. it's not just gojō breathing with getō, but the entire lot of them. finally, everyone is still, recovering from the chaos.

satoru writhes, but shōko is nearly done with what she can do for him right now. relief is beginning to find its way to the poor boy, color returning to his blanched face.

❛❛ i-m, fff-ine, ❜❜ the eldest of the group lies, feebly gripping suguru's hand a little tighter. his palm is sweaty. doesn't want to scare the first years anymore than they are after that near-miss. would've been embarrassing to die in front of them ... ❛❛ gimme, some- space. ❜❜ but the way he holds getō's hand signals : except for you.

feels like all she's been for months and months is a crybaby. bursting into tears over this, weeping over that— faith wants to be strong like sam. in a lot of ways she is, but she doesn't see him cry a lot ( maybe he's just better at hiding it ) ... feels bad that she's doing it now, but at least they're tears of gratitude. hands raise to cover her face, sniffling softly.

enjin laughs. the sound must be jarring, as he's hardly said a thing since collapsing into the interior of aki's homestead. he can't keep his eyes open, but he's aware, a little, that his head is resting over aki's thigh ... that his skin is being desperately wiped down to locate the source of the massacre of blood staining his entire face and the collar of his coat— dying his pale hair sickly dark.

aki's tactless rushing hurts, but everything hurts, so it doesn't matter and enjin doesn't have the energy to complain. he's awake, weakly. doing his best to stay that way. feels those frantic fingers dig through his hair and finally find the alarming gash somewhere above his right ear. fuck, that hurts. his heartbeat races feebly in response.
