I had the honour of doing a artist walk with @emmajvandermerwe. I’m getting more comfortable talking about my work. The first question she asked me was, why the title OURstory and more specifically why did I scratch out the (his) in history. This exhibition was birthed from being tired of being subjected to a western version of the African story, that does not accommodate me (us). That doesn’t tell stories of our greatness. Stories of our kingdoms & civilisations, our ingenuity, inventions, art and spiritual connection & wealth (Mansa Musa). It’s even more painful having this experience at home, on the African continent. I stopped taking history in school because it was painful, I almost failed art because it was taught from a lens that did not see me. (If it wasn’t for graffiti I would have not pursued my passion in painting.) This body of work is an attempt to remove the blinkers from the popular historical narrative and bring light to a broader more inclusive version. One that celebrates Ourstory and gives our kids a point of departure that doesn’t start from slavery or oppression. Tomorrow is the last day to view OURstory, my first Solo Exhibition with @99loopgallery. This has been one of my@greatest journey and I’ve grown so much as a artist, human & father in this 1 month that felt like a lifetime. Chapter 1: A letter from a friend. When I was 3yrs old I used drawing as a way to communicate with my late father. Now I’m using it as a way to communicate with future generations. Hopefully by then politician’s will be held accountable, people will stop looking for self worth in labels & everyone will have a fair chance in the game of life.
