That's it, I think. If you'd like, you can check out my AO3 profile here; I've shared a few works on there. I always love to chat about my interests, so feel free to drop an ask or a message! Ciao!
Okay I'm back. Why is nobody talking about the fact that apparently the black shard that Asgore found in the old Dark World (at Dess's disappearance??????) comes from the same material as the one he found in the computer lab?????????????
Since we have DELTARUNE tomorrow TODAY, here are some of my current thoughts and predictions so I can be either right or (pleasantly, I'm sure) surprised.
I'll put them all under a read more for length. Obviously, spoilers for DELTARUNE up until the end of chapter 4.
In no particular order:
Dess is the Knight.
Something happened to her (in the forest) that caused her to be in a suspended state of sorts, neither alive nor dead? only alive in the dark world, maybe? her soul is trapped in the code of the game?
I don't know what her motivation is. Perhaps she's acting out of self-preservation, but there might be more hidden under the surface.
This is connected to my wild idea that the Titans are not just a physical manifestation of the fear-of-the-dark, but also guardians for... something. This is entirely speculated on the fact that the theme for the Titan fight is called GUARDIAN.
I don't know what they might be guarding. Some sort of source of the dark worlds, maybe? but that's the castle town fountain. is this what happens at the end of the prophecy? the castle town fountain is sealed, which destroys the Titans, defeats the Roaring, but also ensures that the dark worlds cease to exist?
Speaking of the prophecy.
Much like the UNDERTALE Delta Rune prophecy, this prophecy will (almost [*]) always come true, no matter what. It will have a different declination depending on the player's actions. This is also connected to Toby's declaration that there is only one ending -- the end point will be the same, but the circumstances surrounding it (and perhaps the implied consequences) might end up being very different.
This means that the people filling the role of the heroes might end up being different, depending on the player's actions. The second hero might end up being Susie in one route and Noelle in another route, or someone entirely different. Same goes for the first (Kris vs the vessel?) and third (Ralsei vs ...?) heroes.
[*]: I think if there's any chance to rewrite the prophecy, to ensure the story has a different ending, it's through Susie. her arc in the chapters so far, the Hammer of Justice fight and Gerson's dialogue, her already known ability to take choice away from the player and alter the course of fate all seem to point to her being able to actually change the ending, no matter how set in stone it might seem.
since the dark worlds are strongly related to fiction and stories, there's a possibility (if the ending of the prophecy severs our connection to the dark worlds) that Susie's white pen of hope is an actual, physical pen, which she'll use after everything is said and done to write her own stories, thus creating her own (metaphorical?) dark worlds. something something the younger generation taking up the pen and finishing Lord of the Hammer something. This would also line up with her desire for everything to keep going on forever -- no better way to keep a story going than to keep creating on it, interacting with it, playing with its world. i don't know how likely this is, it's just a possibility.
that being said, Gerson does invite the gang (and hence the player) to look between the lines, take different paths, and to avoid being "blinded by the blue light" of the prophecy, so. there's an explicit in-game invitation to find a way to change the ending (or, at least, find an alternative way to the end).
Still on the prophecy: i think that there's a struggle going on between two "factions" that each want control over how the prophecy comes to fruition, and over who will be involved in the ending. one of these factions is led by the disembodied voice in the character creation screen (who, although not confirmed, is likely to be Doctor Gaster). i'm not sure if we know everybody from the second faction, but it certainly stars Kris and Carol Holiday.
Dr. Gaster seems interested in how the player handles the prophecy, and in discovering if they will be able to change the fate of the world of DELTARUNE. therefore, he (tried to) help us create a vessel for our soul, to allow us to interact with the world (through the device he made for this specific purpose -- yes, i also subscribe to the device theory).
Carol and Kris seem intent on altering the meaning of the prophecy towards their own ends (or perhaps they think they can change the prophecy. unsure). For this purpose, they somehow forced the soul to possess Kris, instead of inhabiting Gaster's vessel -- so that Kris could "become" one of the heroes, with all the powers and characteristics the first hero needs.
Why are they doing this? still unsure. Perhaps they want to force the Roaring so that they'll be able to see Dess again? Or they want to stop some other heroes from doing whatever it is that will destroy the dark worlds? whatever the case, they're doing it all to save/help/restore Dess.
(Yes, I think Kris is talking to Carol on the phone. I know that there's a phone call at the end of the Chapter 4 Weird Route in which Carol speaks in normal speech bubbles, but I think there's a very simple explanation for this: during the scenes set in the Holiday Manor, Carol is in a dark world. The dark world in the shelter, maybe? That's why her voice sounds weird. Kris's phone can't communicate from the DWs, but perhaps that's because they refuse to call Carol for us, or he and Carol have a special device for DW-LW communication. At the end of the Ch 4 Weird Route she's in the LW, hence why she sounds "normal".)
Asgore was fired from the police because he was accused of having harmed or killed Dess. he certainly did something that might have resulted in her disappearance (perhaps he closed her into the shelter?). this is because he saw something like the owner of the pointed tail, or a dark world emerging, or something like that, and tried to fight/contain it to protect everyone (as he says in the Holiday Manor scenes). since dark world stuff obviously sounds like a conspiracy theory, he was probably regarded as being either a lunatic or full of it, and he was consequently let go.
Carol couldn't keep him around because, well, appearances, but (perhaps in desperation?) she believed him. she's financing his conspiracy theorist stuff in the hope that he'll be able to find Dess? or she's somehow throwing him off the scent so her plan with Kris can proceed without issues.
I think Asgore is going to open at least one dark world in Chapter 5. this is what he's planning to do to prove the truth in his words (to everyone, and especially to Toriel).
if there is a "true" or "best" version of the ending, i don't think it will be locked behind getting all the shadow crystals. Toby doesn't seem the type to restrict the full fruition of his game behind difficult fights, that not everybody might be able to win. If anything, the dark crystals will give access to some special weapon/equipment (in addition to the fun bonus fights and additional characterization/lore).
(Speaking of the shadow crystals, I don't think we'll get to find out what they're for in Chapter 5. We'll collect the last one in Chapter 5 for sure, but so far all of the crystals have been delivered to Seam in the chapter after the one they can be obtained in. there's no reason to suppose we'll be able to give the last crystal to Seam before Chapter 6.)
The Eggs might have an impact on the ending of the game, although it might be minor. They seem to be connected to Kris's trauma (from whatever happened to Dess), so perhaps finding all the eggs will help Kris in facing and overcoming his trauma.
The chapter 4 Egg room leads me to wonder if Kris might have been accused of doing something to Dess? of accidentally harming or killing her? This is specifically because of that line in the therapy room that goes something like "this is where we come to draw, and we don't kill each other!". Were they considered responsible, and perhaps suffered no consequences because they were considered too young to have acted in actual malice? or is this related to something from even further back (and perhaps to the reason why Kris is the only human in DELTARUNE)?
i can't help but feel like the people of Hometown wouldn't be so welcoming towards Kris if that were the case, but. that line. hm.
in any case -- if there is any requirement in reaching the "best" ending, i'm sure it's to recruit everybody. all the "best" chapter endings so far are those obtained by being kind to everybody. perhaps gathering everybody in castle town will help protect them in some way, or give the heroes some special power to change the course of fate? who knows. i'm sure that being non-violent is key, though.
Much like the Titans are a representation of fear (of the dark specifically), Ralsei is a representation of... something. He doesn't have a physical object form in the LW. I'm not sure what that something might be, but his general appearance leads me to think it has to be something related to the Dreemurrs (if not directly to Kris). I've seen a theory that he might be a monster-sona Kris made when they were little, and I like that idea. It's especially supported by Kris's reaction when showing Susie the picture on the fridge (the way Kris points out all the differences between Asriel and Ralsei makes me think of a kid who swears up and down that their cool character is nothing like their cool older brother, nuh-uh, it's completely different).
Why the hell does Ralsei know the prophecy, though? I don't know. Is it just the role assigned to him from the game/device? is there something deeper? is DELTARUNE actually a timeloop? what is going on????
In any case, the reason he's so dismissive of himself and other darkners is that he knows how the prophecy ends, and that end implies the destructions of all the dark worlds and the creatures thereof. He doesn't think there's a point to them at all, except helping the lightners, because darkners won't be around to see what comes after the end. he's kind of like Seam, that way.
Last but not least:
Toby. hey. hey, Toby. what the fuck is up with that latest ARG scene. Toby. Toby!!!!!
see, this was my first understanding of it as well, but I have to wonder: if this is the case, why is the Titan's spawn's theme called SPAWN? And typeset in the same way, in all caps? SPAWN clearly refers to the creatures you fight, so then -- why would the Titan's theme, written in the same style, refer instead to you?
Idk, I might be reading a little too much into it, but knowing how particular Toby is about details, I have to wonder if there's something deeper hidden here.
I've read a few recently published books, and there's this recurring pattern where if anyone does anything bad and interesting, they have to later talk about it in a way that makes it clear that it was a misunderstanding/ justified/ not their fault, so they're still a good person. and if they have a disagreement with another character, they have to therapy talk it out, regardless of their background. it doesn't matter if this is a street urchin with three teeth who just stabbed and kidnapped someone, you will get eloquent sterile therapy speak that will smooth out any possible emotional tension. and everyone asks for permission before they kiss, and waits for a clear enthusiastic yes. again, doesn't matter the character's background or situation, they will ask "can I please kiss you," because if they didn't, that could get all yucky and uncertain, couldn't it? and if a character is from a rich family, they will hate being in a rich family, and hate wealth signifiers, and actually be all for class equality. and everyone is casually queer, without thought being put into how that would mesh with the society that is being described. like yes, this is violent class-based system obsessed with inheritance, but no, it's not actually a problem that the child they've coldly groomed to take on the family mantle is unwilling to beget an heir because of gay. the parents might be terrible, cruel and fascistic, but they're not homophobic! I don't know, it just seems like EVERYTHING that could actually be messy gets sanded and sanded until it's smooth as a shark, but the Fun Violence is allowed to stay, because bloodshed doesn't actually bother anyone or have any consequence apart from your rogue character shrugging and going oops, was that me? the rogue is still a good person though. if you think they're not, just wait for the two solid pages of introspection. and yes they started the book by slitting two throats, but that was fine. they will ask permission before hugging you.
forget trying to explain dubstep to a victorian child, try to explain genAI to yourself from ten years ago. they invented predictive text on steroids and people take its words as gospel. ceos fully believe that glorified autocomplete can replace millions of employees and many people are fired or forced to edit machine's vomit. creative fields are in shambles, everything is slop. anyone can publicly make porn of anyone in one click, yes, including children. no, there are no consequences for that. nothing feels real. no one can apparently write an email anymore. I'd have a stroke.
I love how every century or so the entire field of physics collapses on itself because of a few discoveries that go against everything currently known and then we just kinda have to wait a little while until it gets back on its feet
A chemist from the 1910s could pick up a modern chemistry textbook and understand quite a bit of it. They’d have lots of missing gaps but they could probably understand a decent amount. A physicist from the 1910s could pick up a modern physics textbook and not understand jack shit of it
I would like to add neutrinos to this list of things people would find mind boggling in ~1910… Pauli, who postulated the neutrino (in 1930) actually said in a letter “I have done a terrible thing, I have postulated a particle that cannot be detected”
Adding literally the entire field of cosmology. The generally accepted view was that the universe was just the Milky Way until like the 1920’s. We didn’t confirm the big bang model until the CMB was discovered in 1964. Dark matter wasn’t really studied until the 70’s and the accelerating expansion of the universe that led to all the discussion about dark energy wasn’t discovered until 1998. If you plucked a physicist out of 1910 and told them “by the way the observable universe is 93 billion light years across and the Milky Way is just one among trillions of galaxies containing a truly unfathomable number of stars just like our sun and it had a finite beginning and is all flying apart faster and faster and we still don’t really know why and also like 70% of the entire universe is some weird shit we can’t see” they’d probably shit themselves (rightfully so. that shit’s bonkers)
The Germans really cooked making "Hobbyless behaviour" an insult. It is both devastating, applicable to a wide range of people and behaviours, and doesn't resort to swearing.
Man ranting on the internet about the Superbowl halftime show or complaining that something is "woke"? Hobbyless Behaviour. Girls mocking another girl for not looking right? Hobbyless Behaviour. Mindless vandalism? Hobbyless Behaviour.
It is more powerful than "get a life" or the English "You're Sad" because it gets to the central point of the matter, and that is wonderful. Danke, Deutsch.
