Her eyes had misted over and her lip rolled between her teeth. She never thought this day would come, and being as official as it was by being on paper! It’s in the books, and there was nothing that could happen that could undo this. The gods really came through on this, and she silently thanked them.

Circe held the adoption certificate in her hands. It was hard to believe, having a family that loved and cared for her. From a chance meeting on a rainy day to being welcomed with opened arms, even at odd hours of the night. Charlie never turned her away, and neither did Jamie and Aaron. Even strangers complimented on how great they looked as a family when they were out. Her heat swelled and she finally felt complete. A family. A real family.

She embraced Charlie in the tightest hug she could give with no sign of letting go anytime soon. “I love you, da’,” she said, breaking out into a sob. It wasn’t a cry of sadness, but one of deserved happiness. “I love you so much.”

There was a loud thud, followed by an apology to the wooden table, a slender hand rubbing it as if it was soothing stinging skin. A wave of embarrassment washed over the young adult as he slid into a chair across from his friend. About a minute had passed, but Oliver felt that all eyes in the library were on him. He didn’t dare look, though, preferring to keep dark eyes on a book titled WE NEED TO TALK: HOW TO HAVE CONVERSATIONS THAT MATTER. He picked it up more for himself than for Sai, but figured it would work just as well for the two of them. They both lacked in a lot of things, but with his research skills and ability to make neat reference notes, he knew they could get through this. Besides, being Sai’s friend meant he had things outside of academics to look forward to, which he enjoyed sometimes.

“So, uh,” he started, “I found some books that I think would help,” he said, dividing the stack in half and sliding it to the other side of the table. “I also read an article from some website  — I think it was Psychology Today  — said that it’s better to go out into the real world to interact with people...” Oliver’s voice was full of dread than anything else. He was great talking to people when it came to his Rubik’s Cube or engineering, or just about anything else in his realm of interests. While he can do everything else satisfactorily, he would rather not voice to Sai how he couldn’t be a proper example once they left the library.

 “Of course I’d be observing you, you know... giving you pointers and stuff.”
