Greasers, Rockers, bad boys and bad girls formed yet another 1950s subculture and fashion genre. Unlike British Rockers and Teddy Boys, American Greasers had a love of hot rods rather than motorcycles. Still, much of their style was drawn from the ‘biker’ look, and much of the Greasers’ culture revolved about rockabilly music and attitude. The term greasers derived from all the popular greased-back hairstyles of the decade; boys used lots of grease to style their hair into pompadours with ducktails. Most were from the working class, so work attire was often integrated into style. They wore Levi 501 jeans, cuffs rolled up with boots (motorcycle, work, and cowboy boots), work trousers, T-shirts with rolled up sleeves, undershirts as outwear, and bowling shirts. Work jackets, denim jackets, and the iconic leather jackets, were also very popular.

As for girls…think of the classic 50’s pinup. Clothing was form-fitting, but it didn’t have extra-low necklines or extra-high hemlines, making it a fairly modest look when compared to other fashion styles. Common apparel included full circle swing dance dresses, cuffed jeans, halter dresses, wiggle dresses, pedal pushers, cardigans, and pencil skirts. Greaser girls usually had “teased” hair, bright red lipstick, and black eyeliner on the eyelids that extended out from the top lid, for that ‘cat eye’ look. 1930’s & 40’s hairstyles, especially the victory roll, were also sported by women of the era. Low-kitten heels and thin stilettos replaced the chunky heels of the 40’s. They were generally round or peep-toed, made from fabrics like silk and satin, worn with seamed stockings for a very feminine look but with an edge.

This was perhaps the most memorable and enduring fashion trend of the decade, it is a style that truly has never gone out of fashion.
