Too Cute to not reblog this- I'm not life-or-death shipper of them, but I really enjoy this duo in any context, friends or lovers? Ah Doesnt matter to me :3
f / o who gently fixes your posture when you are slouching , their cold hands sliding up your back to guide your shoulders back.
but . . . instead of pulling away after correcting you , they just leave their hands there , leaning down to press a soft kiss to the nape of your neck.
Mahito: A very long analysis of his character and the world of Jujutsu Kaisen.
I originally wrote this in 2024, but had nowhere to put it, because I had sworn off social media at the time. But times have changed, and now that I made a tumblr blog, what better opportunity to spew out 40 Google doc pages worth of how much I think about this stupid little thing.
So sit down, buckle up, or don't, because this will get extremely long and wild.
This is an analysis on Mahito, because he is one of, if not THE most misunderstood and underappreciated character in Jujutsu Kaisen, and i felt that these misunderstandings should be addressed.
This analysis contains spoilers up until the Shibuya arc, and also many references from chapter three of the light novel! I highly recommend reading it if you haven’t yet.
The translation I used for the light novel is from mokochan314’s blog. I prefer this translation over the official one, because despite there being some mistakes, I feel that mokochan314’s translation is more faithful to the Japanese intentions and nuances, and does not suffer from the localization that the official translation does.
A forewarning that this may be extremely biased, because I do love Mahito, and how deep his characterization is.
Before I start, a few important reminders:
Mahito is not human. Despite being the most “human” of cursed spirits, he is still a cursed spirit, one that’s trying to figure out what it means to be human, and what it means to be a curse.
Because he is not human, he does not abide by human philosophy. In his own pursuit of answers, Mahito often has his own philosophies that he abides by. Furthermore, because his life experience is so different as a special grade cursed spirit, his worldview is hence extremely different, and therefore he is unable to understand many facets of human life, even though at one point he did attempt to understand.
Mahito is young. Hence, he was always learning on the go, and changing the answers he had to his existential questions as he continued to learn and grow.

CONCLUSION
1. Starting with some low-hanging fruit - Mahito can read, and is in fact very well-read, even memorising books by heart, able to quote them on the fly.
Canonically, he has read:
Metamorphosis, by Franz Kafka
The Heart Sūtra, also titled Prajñāpāramitāhṛdaya, a Buddhist religious text
Possibly at least one work by Virginia Woolf - however, this line is often misquoted, as the actual origin is from a movie on Virginia Woolf’s life titled “The Hours” - however, what is written in the light novel aims to imply that Mahito has read works by Woolf.
The Fellowship of the Ring, by J.R.R. Tolkien (and Mahito even got happy like a small child when he found someone that could understand what he was quoting.)
Elie Wiesel, who wrote the quote “The opposite of love is not hate, it's indifference”, in an American 1986 newspaper. In the anime (S1E10), Mahito immediately knew the origin of the quote when Junpei mentioned it, and mentioned that the person who coined that phrase was not Japanese.
Beyond that, he’s also read far more beyond what’s been canonically listed, and he reads very widely.
BONUS:
Gege even pranks Mahito because he takes his reading so seriously.

2. Mahito WAS a gentle cursed spirit, and used to exist as a simple, curious creature.
2.1. Mahito was truly a free spirit - when he was searching for his hideout, he simply went along with his whims and desires, noticing small things that even a majority of people would forget or take for granted. His behaviour is even innocently childish in a sense.
He displays this behaviour even early on in the anime - where, after the cinema scene, Mahito is shown to be following a stray cat before Junpei approaches him.

2.2. Mahito’s relationship with the old man in his “sewer” solidifies him as set apart from the rest of his species - where, if he chooses to, he can be extremely human, and gentle, and even caring for humans to an extent.
The light novel itself explicitly states this - the relationship Mahito and the old man shared was something unheard of and did not make sense in terms of the world’s logic. And yet, Mahito and the elderly man shared a peaceful time.
Mahito held back on killing the old man, simply because the old man was able to see him, and because the old man's soul was interesting - any other cursed spirit would have killed the elderly man without a second thought.
Even though his reason for sparing the old man was quoted that it was “troublesome” to kill him, was “troublesome” just an excuse? For a being as powerful as Mahito, he could have simply used his cursed technique to shrink him into nothing, or stored him like all the other humans he did in Shibuya (or, stored them like how he did two humans later in the light novel).
If one were to over-read into it - it would seem “troublesome” applies to what his soul would be put through if he were to kill the old man.
Mahito himself started small talk with the elderly man - acknowledging his presence, taking interest in him - he even asked for his name.
Also: Mahito goes again with the because it’s “troublesome”. It’s ironic, really, because many would consider calling someone by their name as more troublesome - it’s why people in upper echelons or hierarchies usually don’t bother with the names of their subordinates.
Over time, the old man even came to appreciate Mahito’s presence. Reusing this screenshot - but the old man himself admits that he finds talking to Mahito nice.
In the old man’s final moments, he found comfort in Mahito, a cursed spirit, who was there for him as his soul faded, bending down and addressing him as “Gramps”. Despite how uncomfortable Mahito felt watching the soul before him metabolise emotions in ways that he did not wish was happening, he still did not leave the old man.
Mahito, a cursed spirit, helped a neglected old man (albeit unwittingly), cast out and murdered by humans, to die happy.
Ironically, it was not a curse that killed the old man in the end, but humans.
Furthermore, throughout this particular old man’s life, to the old man, Mahito was probably the being that was the kindest to him throughout his existence.
A cursed spirit was able to appreciate a life more than some humans were and are able to.
2.3 When interacting with Nanami in Shibuya, Mahito was respectful towards him.
In the manga, we can clearly see Mahito angling his fingers away such that they did not dig into his existing injuries. In the anime (JP dub), this scene is depicted similarly, with his touch and his voice being gentle, even oddly reassuring to some extent, and his fingers avoiding Nanami’s injuries in some frames.
If Itadori did not arrive, Mahito would have been willing to talk for longer to Nanami.
Sc: Manga ch 120, anime S2E18
BONUS: Mahito refrained from killing someone just because he preferred to use his time to read the fantasy novels he recently got - here, he rejected the basic instincts of a curse in order to pursue something lighthearted, leisurely, human, even.
If you've read this far, I highly appreciate it!
I couldn't fit all the screenshots into one single post (they are important, they are evidence), so here's a link to part 2 of this analysis!
Yeah for sure you all dont see a new guy.... It might change but for now he is wayyyy too much in my head to do nothing about it (hate this filthy surgeon rat😭)
I think there will be a new f/o joining my crew (he will be for sure more of a side one, not to mention I think our relationship will be more of a private one if anything.... I think so at least 😅) and i'm already shaking my booty 😭🙏
He is suprisingly NOT from a game, he is drastically diffrent from the rest of my f/os I guess? (in terms of personality) and he is widely hated by fandom... Yeah I mean he is a crazy freak of a villain but it aint like he is the only villain in his source material who did horrible things 🙄 if he will become my f/o... Well- lets just say he will be changed? For sure he he wont be 100% like in canon becuase he is literally embodiment of everything bad 😭😭😭
Anyways-.... Idk take a guess in comments or something??? Something??? I'm so scared of my future 😭🙏 when I will uncover who he is... Those 4 of my followers will prob unfollow me 💔🥀
