a few weeks ago i was thinking about how online there's always some discourse cycle or other where people go "everyone does/should/can do XYZ and if you don't you're a bad person / whatever other negative statement" and a disabled person says "i actually can't do that because i'm disabled" and everyone goes "look at this loser! bean soup theory proven again! nobody was thinking about disabled people this obviously isn't about you." which, aside from the fact that, well, yes, the fact that nobody was thinking about disabled people is part of the problem. the thing is is that disabled people also consider ourselves part of "everyone." on account of disabled people are also people, and thus fit into the category that means "every person." and this applies to a lot of other groups as well ofc. i've just been thinking about it recently like. is it really a "bean soup theory" moment or did somebody just (correctly) assume they are a part of "everybody"

“People getting upset when a main character is a main character” is such a tired response to genuine criticism about Jax because up until recently, it wasn’t clear that he was a main character.

Goose shouldn’t have gotten the hate she did and she is an incredible writer (I mean, can you believe this is just her “testing the waters”?), but I also think that if you have to clarify halfway through your show that someone is a protagonist, then it wasn’t very clear.

Especially when the show was advertised as this:

This post was super misleading when you realize that episodes five, six, seven, and now nine are focused on Jax. He takes up a good 50% of the narrative and receives much more complexity than Pomni, another main character.

Don’t get me wrong, I love Pomni! But we don’t get much on her backstory in the way we do for Jax. Jax, as a character, could remain distinct on his own, whereas Pomni, as a character, heavily exists in relation to the other characters. That isn’t inherently bad, because a core part of her character is her empathy and connection with the others, but you can have that and still give her some interesting lore to work with.

So even then, it’s unfortunately imbalanced.

It’s also the fact that Ragatha, Zooble, and Kinger were all forced to have only half of an episode dedicated to themselves (although I do think that they have great development outside of those episodes), all so that Jax could get more screen time.

I wasn’t even going to rant about this but I am so sick of people telling you that you lack media literacy the second you point out that the attention given to Jax, regardless of he is a main character or not, is heavily imbalanced.

And while I do find Jax interesting, it’s a strange choice to have Kinger’s dead wife — one of the creators of the Circus and Caine — have less build-up than Jax’s dead friend.

(Also, I’m biased, but having Caine — the antagonist with a backstory we don’t even fully know yet — have half of the screen time of an abusive misogynist is a little disappointing, but that’s just my opinion.)

Criticism doesn’t equal hatred. I don’t hate the show, or Jax, or anyone involved. I love TADC and am excited to see how Jax’s story plays out in episode nine. So please don’t interpret this the wrong way. <3

I’m not saying you have to dislike the amount of screen time Jax gets at all.

But I do also think people are so intolerant of different opinions and the responses are so irritating.

You gotta understand that some people never really grow. They never learn their lesson. They never recognise their mistakes, they never acknowledge their faults, they never admit they were in the wrong. You will never receive an apology from them, and you will never see their behaviour change.

yes, everyone is CAPABLE of growth and change. everyone has the RIGHT to growth and change. but no, not everyone will CHOOSE growth and change. some people are not interested in and cannot be made interested in self-improvement or self-reflection. some people will go their entire lives refusing to admit they might be wrong or examine their own behaviors. some people will never, ever accept responsibility for the effects they have on people and the world around them. humans are varied; some are just always gonna be like this.

it is VITAL to understand this if you’re the kind of person who tends to pour energy into helping others, especially if there are already people knowingly hurting you who consistently show absolutely no interest in changing that behavior. you can’t forcibly make them want to change who they are. you aren’t going to find a way to convince them to suddenly care that their behavior is hurting someone.

the motivation to change and grow comes from within. others may inspire us, but WE have to decide we want to be better and work towards that. until they decide that for themselves, nobody else can do it for them. and they might never. people are mortal. we are a finite series of choices. it is entirely possible to make mostly selfish ones.

everyone CAN grow, but not everyone will. not everyone wants to, and nobody can force the desire to grow as a person on someone else.

It's a personal pet peeve of mine but it frustrates me that a big part of dragon ball ocs are almost always Saiyans. Not saying that it's wrong to make a Saiyan oc obviously, I just feel that ends to be too.. predictable? also i feel some races like humans and namekians are reaaaallly left out, even they are the races that has more screentime. Idk.. maybe I'm talking shit

Learning that fans hated Applejack and called her "boring" is crazyyy to me because I genuinely, unironically believe AJ's the most complex character in the main six.

Backstory-wise, she was born into a family of famers/blue collar workers who helped found the town she lives in. She grew up a habitual liar until she had the bad habit traumatized outta her. She lost both her parents and was orphaned at a young age, having to step up as her baby sister's mother figure. She's the only person in the main gang who's experienced this level of loss and grief (A Royal Problem reveals that AJ dreams about memories of being held by her parents as a baby). She moved to Manhattan to live with her wealthy family members, only to realize she'll never fit in or be accepted, even amongst her own family. The earlier seasons imply she and her family had money problems too (In The Ticket Master, AJ wants to go to the gala to earn money to buy new farm equipment and afford hip surgery for her grandma).

Personality-wise, she's a total people-pleaser/steamroller (with an occasional savior complex) who places her self worth on her independence and usefulness for other people, causing her to become a complete workaholic. In Applebuck Season, AJ stops taking care of herself because of her obsessive responsibilities for others and becomes completely dysfunctional. In Apple Family Reunion, AJ has a tearful breakdown because in she thinks she dishonored her family and tarnished her reputation as a potential leader –– an expectation and anxiety that's directly tied to her deceased parents, as shown in the episode's ending scene. In The Last Roundup, AJ abandons her family and friends out of shame because believes she failed them by not earning 1st place in a rodeo competition. She completely spirals emotionally when she isn't able to fulfill her duties toward others. Her need to be the best manifests in intense pride and competitiveness when others challenge her. And when her pride's broken, she cowers and physically hides herself.

Moreover, it's strongly implied that AJ has a deep-seated anger. The comics explore her ranting outbursts more. EQG also obviously has AJ yelling at and insulting Rarity in a jealous fit just to hurt her feelings (with a line that I could write a whole dissection on). And I'm certain I read in a post somewhere that in a Gameloft event, AJ's negative traits are listed as anger.

Subtextually, a lot of these flaws and anxieties can be (retroactively) linked to her parents' death, forcing her to grow up too quickly to become the adult/caregiver of the family (especially after her big brother becomes semiverbal). Notice how throughout the series, she's constantly acting as the "mom friend" of the group (despite everything, she manages to be the most emotionally mature of the bunch). Notice how AJ'll switch to a quieter, calmer tone when her friends are panicking and use soothing prompts and questions to talk them through their emotions/problems; something she'd definitely pick up while raising a child. Same with her stoicism and reluctance at crying or releasing emotions (something Pinkie explicitly points out). She also had a childhood relationship with Rara (which, if you were to give a queer reading, could easy be interpreted as her first 'aha' crush), who eventually left her life. (Interestingly enough, AJ also has an angry outburst with Rara for the same exact reasons as with EQG Rarity; jealous, upset that someone else is using and changing her). It's not hard to imagine an AJ with separation anxiety stemming from her mother and childhood friend/crush leaving. I'm also not above reading into AJ's relationship with her little sister (Y'all ever think about how AB never got to know her parents, even though she shares her father's colors and her mother's curly hair?).

AJ's stubbornness is a symptom of growing up too quickly as well. Who else to play with your baby sister when your brother goes nonverbal (not to discount Big Mac's role in raising AB)? Who else to wake up in the middle of the night to care for your crying baby sister when your grandma needs her rest? When you need to be 100% all the time for your family, you tend to become hard-stuck with a sense of moral superiority. You know what's best because you have to be your best because if you're aren't your best, then everything'll inevitably fall apart and it'll be your fault. And if you don't know what's best –– if you've been wrong the whole time –– that means you haven't been your best, which means you've failed the people who rely on you, which means you can't fulfill your role in the family/society, which makes you worthless . We've seen time and time again how this compulsive need to be right for the sake of others becomes self-destructive (Apple Family Reunion, Sound of Silence, all competitions against RD). We've seen in The Last Roundup how, when no longer at her best, AJ would rather remove herself from her community than confront them because she no longer feels of use to them.

But I guess it is kinda weird that AJ has "masculine" traits and isn't interested in men at all. It's totally justified that an aggressively straight, misogynistic male fandom would characterize her as a "boring background character." /s

i havent used it TOO much, but so far its really good. the entire software is very good as a drawing program- has 99% of all features i wanted from clip studio and some more i didnt even know i wanted (did you know you can make normalmaps on krita???)

there are a couple gripes i have- for some reason it's really finicky trying to get certain keys to work as shortcuts (i havent found a way to get "hold right click for eraser" to work the way it worked on CSP, but maybe thats a skill issue), and also the brush engine works different so it took quite a bit of finagling to get the MS paint brush to how i like it. but overall this is a fucking awesome drawing program. theres a reason people love it a lot LMAO turns out OSS is fucking awesome
