By the way, while I was taking my long break from the discourse-heavy parts of the internet, I finished learning Tapap to my satisfaction and started in on Voan. I’m thinking of starting Cenemi next, now that I’m almost finished with my first Voan translation of an Erethani book (Dreams of the Fox again).

I welcome book recs in any of those three languages, or for that matter Anitami or Oahkar.

a hundred silver moons is one of my favorite books. it’s historical fiction, about two purples who are exiled from their tribe because of (very mild spoilers) an unfortunate spring-relationship with a blue. it’s a tragedy, but a beautiful and hopeful sort of tragedy, if that makes sense.

you might have heard of truth and honor already; it’s pretty famous. it’s set in cene under oahk rule, and it’s centered on the lives of a grey sister and brother descended from a line of famous warriors. i’m usually not big on books written more than like 25 years ago, but it’s so good. also kind of tragic. [ooc: mentioned here.]

for something lighter, yesterday’s new is about a writer green and her mathematician-track stepdaughter. it’s partly a coming-of-age book, i guess, but not in the usual YA style. the author has a very entertaining writing style.

APPARENTLY the parents got into a screaming fight for like six hours and eventually the neighbors, like. called the police. with a noise complaint. and then mom did the ~passive resistance~ thing and dad argued and so yeah i ended up getting a call at like

to bail them both out

and now they are both on my couch screaming at each other again

oh my god, that’s awful. are you okay? can you ask them to leave your apartment? do they have friends or siblings in the area who you could call to step in and take them off your hands? you’re their kid, even as an adult you shouldn’t be the one to have to handle this. :(

there’s a breakfast place two tunnelrail stops from my parents’ apartment. it opened a year ago and my family have been regular customers ever since. one of the waiters is a friend of my dad’s.

today my mom was told we “are no longer welcome at this establishment.”

it’s really quite stupid. my brother substituted onion circles for the potato circles in the dish he ordered. the waitress said this cost half an ahk more, but apparently it showed up as a full ahk extra on the bill. (my brother and i went outside to enjoy the weather while mom paid, so i didn’t see the bill.)

half an ahk is nothing. but dad wasn’t there, he’d stayed home because the baby was having a fever. and mom can be ridiculously hardheaded a stickler for accuracy.

according to her, she argued with them, they argued back, insulted her, threatened to charge her with theft of services, and eventually the assistant manager came and said the quote above. my mom paid the correct amount regardless, left, and then recounted all this to me.

i wish dad been there to calm her down and pay that half an ahk. or else, i wish that mom had been carrying the baby. then this just never would have happened.

huh, i don’t think smell is that necessary. if you’re eating at home, and you’re worried something might be off, you can always ask someone else to smell it for you. and at restaurants, you can restrict yourself to ordering things that are made fresh.
