It is probably not good for my mental health to read blogs claiming that Natural Aversion Therapy worked for them. I’ve read the studies. I know that if my parents had decided it was a good idea it would have made things worse. That doesn’t mean that it’s healthy to add one more suggestion in the back of my brain that perhaps torturing my younger self would have been a good idea.
At the same time, if I don’t apply my intellectual integrity to ideas that I find personally challenging, then I fundamentally do not have intellectual integrity. It is important that I believe things that are correct, even if they are personally inconvenient. While of course anecdotal evidence should not factor into my opinions, I certainly do not and should not want to selectively expose my self only to anecdotal evidence that reinforces my existing beliefs.
