THE ODD ONES OUT // PROLOGUE
pairing â taehyung x reader
genre â college au
word count â 4.7k
warnings â mentions of toxic family, vomiting (just once), sadness of leaving. taehyung doesnt make an appearance yet, but is mentioned.
A hint of frost builds up on your window as the night sky becomes darker. You rested your head on the moving taxiâs seat, watching familiar buildings pass by.
This is it, youâre finally fleeing. Away from everything you made yourself familiar with, everything that was worth your while.
You felt sad having to leave the place you grew up in, but this choice was made by you and made to help you. Memories from your home flashes right before your eyes as your destination comes closerâthe airport.
A few hours from now, you will be in an entire different country, surrounded by people with a very much different belief and culture.
You didnât know what to feel. Do you feel happy leaving your once happy family behind to pursue your dreams? Of course, but at what cost? Thereâs always a catch to it, you just donât know yet.
Were you sad because you had to leave? or is it because of the cold December blues? nobody has the answer to anything at this point.
Years ago if you would imagine leaving home, you thought your mother would be in tears and father being stoic. Car filled with oddly shaped bags and suitcases as you head to college. Maybe that's the way it would have been if only you and your parents kept a good relationship.
Well that was not the case.
Instead, your motherâs silence screamed happiness and your father was not even present the moment you left your childhood home.
You sighed as you prepared to get your wallet from your backpack.
âYou okay?â a honey-like voice called beside you. Turning your head to his direction, you see a tired and a rather concerned look on Yoongiâs face.
âIâm okay.â You replied in a nonchalant manner, clearly giving Yoongi the idea that something was bothering you. He scoffed, shaking his head at your painfully obvious lie.
âYouâre not,â He said, as a matter of factly. You turned your head back to the window view, just to avoid talking about your confusing emotions with someone like Yoongi, who usually gives unsolicited advice.
You rested your palms against your cheek as you relaxed your head to the window frame. Hearing a sigh from beside you, âLook, if youâre worried about leaving everything behind and starting a new life, donât be.â
Well, you werenât, but now you were.
You are not worried about leaving everything behind because this was YOUR choice. You have thought of this over and over for the past few months until you finally decided that itâs really time to leave.
But now that Yoongi mentioned it, is it really worth it? To choose a career over fixing your relationship with your family?
You just want to forget it all.
He placed his hand on top of your free one, making you turn your gaze back at him. âIâm sure youâll do great..you can come back here any time. Iâll support you whatever your decision is.â He added.
You massage your temples using your hand near the car window, âI'm fine, Gi, really.â you replied while giving him a reassuring smile.
You are fine, itâs just that, youâll miss this place. Despite the angst and anger imprinted on your home, you couldn't deny there was still happiness lingering around that place.
The mix of melancholy from leaving and excitement for starting a new life builds up on your body just resulting in making you anxious about the flight and the adjustment.
The taxi came to a halt as the driver in front stopped the meter. The screen displayed the amount of money needed to be paid, both you and yoongi split the amount.
Ah, Yoongi. What would you do without him?
You have known Yoongi for most of your life, well thatâs mainly because of your mothers. Both of them were childhood best friends that decided it was a great idea to have children with the same age range.
The only difference was.. your mother was a little more problematic than Yoongiâs.
Ever since he found out how abusive your mom is, he made a promise to himself that he would always protect you. No matter what, under any circumstances.
He did. And you are more than grateful.
Up until now, even if youâre moving to another country, Yoongi still found a way to be with you. Not that itâs a bad thing.
Yoongi was a ladies man growing up. He had the looks and a smile any girl would fall for. Not only that, but he had endless charisma within him. That was just one of his many talents.
Heâs one of the best players of basketball in your highschool, so it was no surprise that he was given a full scholarship. Free college at a good university in return for playing for them? Itâs a yes in his book.
Both you and Yoongi always had the admiration for travelling, may it be long car trips at 2AM or just choosing the longer way home.
At the age 12 you had your first ever airplane ride. And something about flying made you feel warm and happy, which led you into deciding that your dream job is to become a flight attendant.
To give warm smiles to passengers while learning to keep them safe is now one of your goals.
As for Yoongi, his Father was once a great Pilot. Everybody admired Mr. Min for his humble attitude and charisma. Yoongi wanted to be admired like that too.
Which led him to deciding to follow his old manâs steps. âBut a better one!â his dad advised.
The taxi driver went out of his seat to help you and Yoongi take out the luggage in the trunk. You went out of the car, feeling the winter wind hug you inside your knitted sweater.
âHelp me out here! Shit, you have lots of bags and for what?!â you heard Yoongi struggle in the back of the trunk, sweat forming in his forehead, making the taxi driver let out a low laugh.
You snort at the look of his face, âFor a basketball player, you sure are unfit.â
âshut up and come here!â he demanded which made you laugh for the first time since the sun rised.
â
The airport was one of the most beautiful man made structures in your opinion. Elegantly curved roofs colored in quartz with huge glass windows that give travellers the view of the airplanes. check-in desks to the cafe's and through the gates, each one of them heading for a destination of their own making.
As I turn to depart I feel part of my soul imprint onto the walls, a parting gift from me to this place.
This is really it.
âReady?â Yoongi asked, holding a freshly made americano on his hand and his passport and ticket on the other, handing them to me because god knows what will happen if he lost it.
The man canât leave without his coffee.
You gave him a nod even if anxiety was taking over you. âItâs going to be okay.â he said, as if he read your mind. Even if he did, you were more than sure heâll understand.
He may be an asshole, but heâs an asshole thatâs your best friend. He made you feel at ease.
âLetâs go?â You asked, making Yoongi smile. âSeoul here we go!â he cheered, raising a ball of fist in the air. His loud voice made people turn to his direction.
âOh my God, you are embarrassing.â You cringed, covering your face and started walking towards the baggage screening.
âHey! Wait up!â you heard his footsteps run over towards you.
You and Yoongi proceeded to check-in your excess luggage, leaving behind your essentials to be hand carried.
The security guided the both of you towards the boarding pass. âMy passport and ticket is with you, right?â Yoongi asked, throwing his empty plastic cup in the nearest bin.
âYeah,â you hurriedly walked over to the lady on the podium. With Yoongi following behind, you gave her both of your passes.
With that out of the way, you were now led to the infamous airplane aisle. Taking a deep breath, you went inside.
âWelcome aboard!â a beautiful and a rather tall stewardess greeted. You gave her a warm smile in return and went back to look at your ticket.
âWhere do we sit?â Yoongi leaned in to whisper. â16A for me and 17A for yours, I get the window seat.â You claimed, looking for your designated spot.
â
âLadies and gentlemen, welcome onboard to Flight 1231 with service to Seoul, South Korea. We are currently third in line for take-off and are expected to be in the air in approximately eight minutes time. We ask that you please fasten your seatbelts at this time and secure all baggage underneath your seat or in the overhead compartments.â
You did as you were told and double checked all of your personal belongings.
âWe also ask that your seats and table trays are in the upright position for take-off. Please turn off all personal electronic devices, including laptops and cell phones. Smoking is prohibited for the duration of the flight. Thank you for choosing Bangtan Airlines. Enjoy your flight.â
Yoongi snickered in his seat, his giddyness radiating. âAfter four years, itâs going to be you speaking on those radio thingies.â
You couldn't help but smile, taking his comment as a compliment. You were about to respond when a manlier voice spoke through the so-called radio.
âGood evening passengers. This is your captain speaking. First, I'd like to welcome everyone on Bangtan Airlines, Flight 1231. We are currently cruising at an altitude of 32,000 feet at an airspeed of 400 miles per hour. The time is 8:42pm. The weather looks good and with the tailwind on our side we are expecting to land in Seoul approximately twenty minutes ahead of schedule.â
âAnd that,â you pointed at the radio above you, âwill be you soon.â
âThe weather in Seoul is gloomy and freezing, with a low of negative 7 degrees for this evening. If the weather cooperates we should get a great view of the city as we descend. The cabin crew will be coming around in about ten minutes time to offer you a light snack and beverage, and the inflight movie will begin shortly after that. I'll talk to you again before we reach our destination. Until then, sit back, relax and enjoy the rest of the flight."
You then again followed as you were told. You closed your eyes for a moment, trying to relax and clear your thoughts.
Everything will be okay.
You heard Yoongi struggling for the nth time tonight, but this time it was with his mini TV. He canât seem to choose a good movie for the time being.
âWant to watch shrek with me?â He asked wiggling his eyebrows up and down, âNo.â you deadpan, receiving an eye roll from him.
Last night, exactly 23 hours ago, you felt like you had the longest dream.
It was set in a beautiful mountain top, with trees standing ghost-like, the river and the clouds. The only thing bigger than the range of granite peaks was the midnight sky, dotted with silver and as vast as any eye could wander. Below stood a boy, with a beautiful smile.
You could've sworn youâve never seen that boy your entire life, so who could it be?
The boy you saw gave you an angsty smile, a hint of anger and regret all at once. What could all these mean? Is this a sign of some sort?
You sighed as you heard the captain speak again,
âCabin crew, prepare for take off.â
â
You basically slept through half of the flight in hopes to ease your anxiety, just waking up to eat. Yoongi nudged you from your ascending slumber and handed you a small tray all while in a blurry state.
"thank you," You mumbled, stretching your numb limbs to relax your bones. Carefully peeling the layer of shiny aluminum foil covering the meal to retain heat, the food was revealed to be freshly made bread and different kinds of spreads to choose from.
Looking over at Yoongiâs tray he had chosen the pasta which looked delicious, covered by a smooth sauce and parmesan.
Yoongi knew you donât like eating a lot during plane rides, unless you want to cause a commotion and vomit all over the place. So being the best friend that he is, he chose the best option.
The food was rather normal. you expected it to be worse, but this one gets a pass.
You slept through the rest of the flight, waking up to the now familiar voice of the captain.
You are now in south korea, as can be seen from your window, morning light becomes more bright, clouds shine like nascent snow, stretching to the horizon.
The clouds move constantly, flowing as sheets hundreds of feet apart, yet giving the appearance of one dense layer from the land below.
âFlight attendants, prepare for landing.â The captain's voice awakens the passengers, most of them immediately looking through the windows with smiles plastered on their faces.
As the aircraft descends, âLadies and gentlemen, welcome to Seoul Airport. Local time is 10:14AM and the temperature is still at negative seven.â The captain informs.
Flight attendants proceeded to help the passengers remove their seat belts when the plane finally landed. Double checking your belongings, you notice an excited Min Yoongi.
âI canât believe weâre finally here!â He exclaimed, holding your hand inside his as he shook them around. Passengers are now forming a line, ready to wander around.
âOn behalf of Bangtan Airlines and the entire crew, Iâd like to thank you for joining us on this trip and we are looking forward to seeing you on board again in the near future. Have a nice day!â
â
âIs this it? check it again.â Yoongi blabbered.
You stood in front of the university that you and yoongi would study in for the next four years or so.
There was no motel to be checked in because that would cost cash. Instead, you and yoongi decided to head directly to your designated dorm.
âYes, iâm sure!â you said, annoyed. Yoongi raised his hands in defeat, âalright fine! just double checking, jeez.â
Filling up all the requirements needed, the lady in the front desk finally decided to give both of you the keys. Security guiding you along the way.
This is when Yoongi and you part ways, not literally apart but..you wonât be sharing rooms since you both take a different course.
The university was a famous aviation university in Korea, the home of aspiring and soon to be pilots, flight attendants and anything in between.
Yoongiâs dormitory was not too far from yours, maybe a building apart. You wonder what kind of room mate youâll have. Will they be kind? An asshole? Like Yoongi?
Socializing is not a problem for you, in fact, you were kind of a social butterfly in your highschool days. So this wonât be too different, wonât it?
You Pressed the number 12 on the elevator. Your building had 15 floors, beautifully designed at least. Still with your luggages in your grip, you hurriedly ran your hands through your hair to fix it a bit.
Have to look decent for your new dorm mate, right?
The elevator let out a ping, indicating that you are on your desired floor. You dragged your luggage loose and went to find your room. âRoom 1231â you read at the key card, this must be it.
Standing in front of Room 1231, you knocked thrice.
A minute passed and there was still no answer. Did you not have a dorm mate? You tried knocking again.
Still no answer.
You twisted the door open, only to be greeted with an off-white room, with wooden furniture beautifully arranged in all the right places.
âHello?â you dragged your luggage from behind you, kicking the door close with your feet. Leaving the bags behind, you slowly toured yourself around the house.
Silence filled up the room since no one answered.
The dorm had two bedroom doors that were painted in oak, assuming this place had two rooms. In front of the main door, you would immediately see a dining table and the marbled kitchen beside it.
The dorm looks decent, you could live with this.
Still no response to your constant calls, you decided to unpack your stuff while sitting on the couch. The door beside the couch leads to the toilet, you guess. You never bothered to check anyway.
In front of the couch was a small glass coffee table and In front of that was a small TV.
You hummed as you folded your clothes neatly, placing them on the glass table, wondering what could yoongi be doing at the moment at his own dorm.
You both promise to stay in touch and even hang around if you both had free time anyway.
âSo youâre my new room mate, huh?â A manly voice from behind you stated.
Eyes turning wide you followed your instinct and quickly grabbed a piece of cloth and repeatedly hit the comfortably dressed man.
âWhat are you- Stop! Sto-â He blocked your hits and you came to a halt when you realized he just got out of the shower,
âOh my god! I am SO sorry.â you gasped..so HE is your roommate. âI thought no one was home so I let myself in and i-â
You come closer to him, still having your palms on your lips in shock. âIâm sorry..â
The man who seemed to be your age just took in a relieved sigh, placing his hand on his chest.
âYou almost killed-â
âI know! Oh god i am so sorry.â you clasped your hands together in pleading when he laughed, shaking his head in amusement.
He had ash brown hair and his facial features were baby-like, crescented eyes, soft skin and a button nose. There was nothing ugly about his looks at all, even his jaw was shaved absolutely smooth.
â...and you are?â he turned his head slightly to the side, you didnât quite catch what he said. stammering to your words,
âSorry, what?â you blinked twice, showing confusion. He let out a chuckle, showing his imperfectly perfect teeth, âYour name. What is it?â He repeated, heading over to the fridge just beside the dining table to get water, you guess.
âOh uh..[y/n], you are?â You asked, quickly fixing your posture so you donât embarrass yourself further.
Opening a bottle of water, he handed one to you as he sat on the sofa. Making you adjust your body to face him. Now below you, he responded,
âJimin.â The now named boy smiled offering his hand for you to shake. You complied with a smile.
â
Jimin is one of the most funniest fucking guy you have ever met.
two hours into getting to know each other, you were getting along pretty well.
Of course telling your deepest secrets wasn't involved yet, but all the basic information needed to know was disclosed.
You wiped your fallen tear as you clutched your stomach in hopes to stop laughing.
Both you and Jimin wheezed again until you both eventually stopped laughing because your jaws hurt.
âItâs getting pretty late and youâre probably jet lagged, say letâs talk again tomorrow?â he said, standing up from the carpeted floor both of you sat in.
âYeah, Iâm pretty tired and I have an orientation to attend to the next day.â you waved, eating your last piece of pizza that you guys ordered an hour ago.
âGoodnight, y/n!â He cheered, covering his mouth from letting out a yawn.
âGoodnight!â
Entering your room, you sat on the end of your bed ; four walls, a bed, a desk and a wardrobe. You love it. No matter how small it is, there was no Mom to tell you to tidy up and get your shit together, get your laundry done, stop going on twitter⊠you could hear indistinct chatter in the thin wall separating you from your neighbors.
These would be your new friends, drinking buddies, partners in crime. you glanced down at the unpacked boxes that lay about her feet, tomorrow is going to be a tiring day.
As your consciousness ebbed, your mind went into free fall, swirling with the beautiful chaos of a new dream.
â
A week has passed since you have landed in Korea. Official class starts in 4 days. Excitement rushes over your body, finally starting the first step to your goal of being a flight attendant.
You actually liked school ever since, due to the fact that it served as a distraction from everything else.
But this was different. This is college. Everything you do will affect your future.
This school year will serve as my golden ticket in the snow. It's a chance to better myself, to learn and grow. It's a chance for change, or perhaps metamorphosis if you're lucky.
Feeling a good kind of explosion in your brain, a type that carries more possibilities than you could be conscious of, there were hundreds of ideas there in that buzz of electricity where you could actually feel it.
Itâs like a calling card for adventure, paths awaiting on your feet. Whatever was ahead could be a great challenge, sure, there could be tears, but it was your adventure to take and so you smiled.
The ideas would come, probably when you least expected it.
It has become a habit of yours these past week to go out every morning with Yoongi, just to explore your new home.
The city you now lived in was a vast, intricate, labyrinth of noisy, streets and alleys.
You could hear the loud ass honking of the vehicles early in the morning. When going out, you see Impatient businessmen who enter their 20 storey offices, you see mothers who had their crying children in front of their schools, and even some professors from a local highschool who had stopped at the local bakery to get a bagel and a coffee before their morning classes.
After every person had reached their respective destination, the traffic congestions cleared significantly as if humongous snakes had eaten their fills and were retracting back into their dark and eerie caves.
Walking down the street with Yoongi, he sensed the fresh batch of sweet and cheesy rolls being baked for the lunch hour rush.
âLetâs try this cafĂ© out!â He pulled your wrists inside the cafe.
A ring! the sound from the bells above the door chirped as both you and Yoongi entered. The smell of bread and coffee colonized your senses as you looked for a place to sit in.
The cafĂ© looked like what youâd expect. Square tables with glass tops, a 90âs looking menu, light classical music, waiters dressed in white and brown, marbled floors with large windows and small vases of yellow carnation flowers on each table and of course, the daily specials on a chalkboard.
Yoongi ordered a simple pancake with a chocolate dressing and coffee for the drink while you ordered an avocado toast.
Pleasing silence while both of you ate was something youâre now used to.
Korea was slowly engraving itself to your heart.
â
The halls were crowded with people.
It wasnât chaotic like the movie mean girls when regina spread the secrets inside the burn book. It was perfect.
The right amount of chatter and silence filled the whole hallway.
In highschool you would expect the couple that was always making out on the lockers, mean girls, jocks, band geeks with their huge instrument cases.
But in this particular college, there were the aerospace students, future flight attendants, aspiring pilots and engineers.
Yoongi was on the other side of the building, probably on his first class to be a pilot himself. While here you were in front of your class door, ethics.
In which youâll learn about the doâs and donâts of being an attendant.
You opened the door to reveal a teacher-less teacherâs desk, a minimum of 50 chairs scattered neatly and 5 other students who seem to have no interest in you.
You sat at a random chair and whipped out your pen and notebook. While waiting, you decided to just text yoongi a random meme.
Students slowly filled up the room,
âHi, is this seat taken?â A manâs voice said, making you turn your attention from your phone, to him.
âOh no! Itâs freeâ you smiled, giving him enough space to adjust to the seat. You were so distracted on your phone that you didn't notice the room was already filled.
He seemed a bit shy to talk so you engaged first, it was in your natural habitat to do so.
âIâm [y/n], by the way! nice to meet you..?â you introduced, offering you a hand out for him to shake.
âHoseok, you can call me hobi..if youâd like.â he pursed his lips but lets out a heart shaped smile in the end.
âOkay, hobi! i guess weâll be seat mates for a while.â you smiled. You wanted the conversation to keep going, but the professor silenced everyone in the room.
â
Ethics class was rather interesting. As they say, you learn new things everyday. Hobi and you were whispering random jokes about ethics which made the class a little bearable.
But the fifth time you attended, it was getting pretty fucking boring.
âSay, do you want a tour around the campus?â He asked as he opened the door to go outside for you.
You remembered you have no next class so you have a free hour, same goes for hobi.
âYouâve been around here?â you asked tucking a stray hair that was bothering you behind your ear.
âYes, i had free time before school started, is that a yes or a no?â he asked, now walking backwards.
You gave him a nod of approval as he pulled your wrist, making you walk a little faster than normal.
â
Bulletin boards were now scattered around the school and big letters forming a âvote now!â were scattered. You didnât know colleges still had a voting for student council, but that made sense because students still need a leader. Plus itâs good for a resume.
You were now walking past these people who were standing on a ladder, in hopes to put the banners up properly.
You gave some of them a smile and they did so back. You share the same class with most of them. You were alone, walking over to hobi who was waiting outside of his class door.
You and him had been fairly close, attending classes together and eating together for lunch. It was a good thing since Yoongi himself has been busy with a different schedule.
Hobi introduced you to this stairwell that nobody actually uses. Both of you hang around there during your free time.
âTook you long enough.â he smiled, peeling himself off the wall he was leaning into and started walking with you.
âSorry! the old prof of mine basically told her whole love story with her 2 different husbands.â you shrugged.
he let out a disapproving laugh with a hand over his stomach. âOld people, huh?â he said as he shook his head.
As both of you made your way to another class you shared, a banner caught your attention. A list of candidates has already been released.
you stopped your tracks and so did hobi. He let out a gasp as he pointed towards a candidateâs face. âWhatâs wrong?â you asked.
âDamn, I didnât know he would be running for president! out of all positions there is!â He exclaimed.
âWhat? Who?â
âKim Taehyung? Iâm sure heâll win, that guy is like a chick-magnetââ he paused, turning towards you with a scared look on his face.
âYouâre from another country, right?â Hobi asked and you gave him a slow nod, indicating that you are still confused.
Who is this Kim Taehyung and why is Hobi worried?
âOh..Then you donât have to know who he is. He hates âoutsidersâ like yourself.â he quote on quote.
âAnd if he doesnât like someone, he'll make them aware of it.â
