So I know there are some popular takes about Cas being Free Will/THEE agent of free will, but I've always felt like it's missing the point of the entire "how to get out of the narrative" thing that takes place in later seasons - isn't the whole point that it's their love for each other, all of tfw, that saves them from Chuck's narrative ? Not one of them IS "free will", and that was the point of Lebanon's Cas, of Chuck's visions of Sam & Dean without Cas, etc right ? What's your reading on this?
It's funny you ask that because I was just having a similar convo with some friends the other that. In short, yeah I agree. The thing is that free will is something that is inherent in the human soul. Cas isn't free will or the only one with free will. That's deeply missing the point. Cas is the spanner in the works because he made choices instead of obeying. Cas enacted his own free will, he discovered his own soul (in a sense, though that has amazing implications meta-wise, I think).
When Cas gives his "We are" speech to Dean, echoing Dean's speech to Cas aaall the way back in season 5, Cas is reminding Dean of something Dean has forgotten in his fear: that no matter what Chuck does, their choices are their own. They are real. Their souls are real.
It's not about Cas being the only one able to break from the narrative, it's how all souls can, with TFW leading the way because they are heroes. And yeah what guides them to make the right choice, ultimately, each and every time is love. What makes Cas able to make use of his free will is love.
Everything you have ever done, the good and the bad, you have done for love.
