Music of the Late 1800s - African American Music

African Americans have played a tremendous role in American music. Almost all popular music contains elements of African American rhythms and culture. Black spirituals are one of the best known and earliest forms of American music. These religious songs eventually gave birth to the blues. Jazz, which began in the late 1800's, grew out of black folk blues and ballads

Music of the Early 1900s

This was a period of excitement for American music.Plays on Broadway, motion pictures, gramophones, animated cartoonswere developed in the early century. In St. Louis, in 1904, the country celebrated the World's Fair. People came from far and near to enjoy the spectacle and the music. Nineteen ten marked the beginning the popularity of ballroom dancing. As the twentieth century approached music was lively. Enrico Caruso made records. Broadway was in full swing with musicals like Peter Pan  and The Wizard of Oz. Popular songs included Give My Regards to Broadway and Meet Me in St. Louis (written for the Louisiana Purchase Exposition.) .

The Blue Juniata - 1841

First big song by American woman. The Blue Juniata 1841 Words and Music by: Mrs. M. D. Sullivan Cover art: Litho. Bufford & Sons Appearing in 1841, this song is one of the earliest "Indian" popular songs to be written and published in America. Though later in the early 20th century, "Indian" themed songs were quite the rage.. such songs were few and far between during this decade. It was one of the most popular parlor songs of the Nineteenth Century, and the first commercially successful song written by an American woman. The title refers to a river, the Juniata and an Indian maid, Alfarata who sings of her love "where sweep the waters of the blue Juniata." Background on the Juniata: "The Juniata River is a tributary of the Susquehanna River, approximately 90 miles long, in central Pennsylvania. The river is considered scenic along much of its route, having a broad and shallow course passing through several mountain ridges and steeply-lined water gaps. It formed an early 18th-century frontier region in Pennsylvania and was the site of Native American attacks against white settlements during the French and Indian War (1754–1763)." The song is one that became extremely popular and even appeared in the Laura Ingalls Wilder book Little House on the Prairie. The song is relatively simple with a single bass chord on the first beat of each measure followed by either alternating chords or in most measures, a chord repeated on each of the following beats. the essential rhythm is bass-chord-chord-chord or bass-chord-bass-chord to accompany the melody. The lyrics are romantic and the melody is bright and happy and it is easy to see how this song became so popular. The song is memorable as both an early "true American" song but for its significance as a breakthrough work for a woman composer. Almost every reference to this song found on the net gives a publication date of 1844 however the copy we have is clearly dated 1841. Some accounts describe the lyrics as a poem written by Sullivan as early as 1830.

1840's Music

America's music began to change during this period. Music dominated by the classics and European composers to an emergence of American composers and uniquely American performance styles such as the first Minstrel groups and composers such as Stephen Foster coming of age. The next post will elaborate on a certain song from this era.

1839 Music

Joy to the World & Antoich- Hymn from Handel. The music is from1836 in many hymnbooks in churches. Henry Lowell Mason the great-great grandson of Lowell Mason wrote: "Lowell Mason's hymn-tune arrangement, 'Antioch,' was written by him in 1836.. as I have been able to recall the date." Unfortunately Mason did not declare a date to many of his productions, but research has led people that the exact date of 'Antioch' was 1836. The first publication in book form of the tune was in his The Modern Psalmist. The opening strain is derived from the chorus "Glory to God" in Handel's oratorio Messiah.

One of these Middle Tennessee forts was Mansker’s Station, built in 1780 near what is now the city of Goodlettsville by a group of men under the leadership of a skilled frontiersman named Kasper Mansker. Like other stations throughout the area, Mansker’s was a center for pioneer social life, and traveling musicians stopped there to rest, play for special events and entertain the settlers. Life was difficult on the American frontier, and music was a welcome relief from the hardships of the time.

Dancing Masters Kit defined

Dancing was an important social skill for all those intending to enter polite society, and dancing masters were employed to show young ladies and gentlemen the steps. A kit was a small fiddle used by the masters when teaching the dancers. It was small enough to be played while demonstrating dance steps and was quiet, so the music would not disturb the neighbours. Another name for a kit is pochette (from the French for "pocket") as the fiddle was so small it could easily be slipped into a pocket when not being used. This kit was either made or sold in 1780 by James Aird, who had a music shop at the corner of Gibson's Wynd and New Street. As well as selling musical instruments, Aird was one of several Glasgow men who published and sold sheet music.

Psalm Singing

In the improvement of psalm singing, Thomas Moore's efforts were followed by R A Smith (1780-1829) in Paisley. Samuel Barr (1807-1866) taught music at the Mechanics Institute. There was a huge growth in vocal music in the form of choirs and concerts organized by the precentors of numerous churches.

1801 Beethoven

Ludwig van Beethoven's Symphony No. 1 was dedicated to Baron Gottfried van Swieten, an early patron of the composer. The piece was published in 1801 by Hoffmeister & Kühnel of Leipzig. It is unknown exactly when Beethoven finished writing this work, but sketches of the finale were found from 1795.
