Pairing: Saizo/MC Rating: NSFW Word Count: ~11,400 Summary: At 14, Saizo already carries the weight of the world on his shoulders. When he gets an assignment he doesn’t want to fulfill, he comes across an unlikely companion– someone with whom to share some of those burdens. When he doesn’t see her again for another three years, he finds that nothing has changed between them, not really. Nothing except their circumstances, which are fated to shift just one more time.  Author’s Notes: HAPPY HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ONE OF MY ABSOLUTE BEST FRIENDS IN THIS FANDOM, @saizoswifey!!!!!!!! I gotta say, this was almost impossible for me to keep under wraps because I was so, so excited to be writing it for you at all, but I was lucky enough to have the amazing, amazing @pseudofaux on my side, who annotated this bad boy and gave me no end of input to help me along. For the purposes of this fic, I borrowed Kristan’s version of Saizo’s MC who is blind. 

Also! A fair amount of historical research went into the creation of this fic. Save for the existence of MC (which I had no way to verify) and her use as a hostage, all of it was kept completely accurate, including how old Saizo would have been at any given time. The same goes for the existence of the Numata clan and their relations with the Sanada/Takeda, as well as what happened to MC’s uncle. I have a full timeline, but if you have any questions about anything specific, feel free to ask!

Takenaka Hanbei has a secret. One that surprises him when the world is asleep, one that visits him in the land of dreams, intruding on his peaceful slumber. It is one sort of premonition, that a vivid imagery that plays into a sequence the moment he drifts into sleep. The landscape appears, blood staining the battleground in an angry shade of crimson. He hears the metallic clanks of swords, the sparks setting off the moment the weapons come in contact. Then the nose is drowned out, muffled as the picture turns hazy, and Takenaka Hanbei is brought back to his reality.

He stares at the ceiling, sweat pouring out from his every pore, and his chest aches from the revelation he could never seem to get used to.

And he coughs.

And there is blood.

And he is used to this.

So, Takenaka Hanbei has two secrets; He can see the future in his dreams, and he is in dire need of medical attention.

But he continues to disregard both, knowing that fragments of dreams do not offer him valuable information necessary to win a skirmish. He could only see people retreating, dying, but has never seen how they were able to get the enemy to fall back, or how their foes losing men is equal to them gaining the upper hand.

In short, those dreams were useless.

But there was one dream that leaves him thinking, the blood on his sheets now seem to remind him of it. He sighs, reaching for the basin next to him, and start washing the stain of his silken kimono.

Next, he brushes his futon in silence, the sea of red, the unshapely blots resembling pieces of rose petals crushed to the ground. They slightly fade into pink, like a wave of cherry blossoms rocking back and forth and over the creases of his sheets. It was almost beautiful, much much different from how it was earlier.

But Takenaka Hanbei knows his predicament was far from the magic of spring.

“Hanbei.” His thoughts were interrupted by a call from outside. “I’m coming in.”

Before he can complain, Mitsunari comes in, and they both stare at each other in silence, as if their eyes can speak multitudes more than their tongues can ever say. The young samurai then takes the washcloth from Hanbei and helps him lie down.

Mitsunari resumes where he lefts off, brushing the remaining stain away. The young samurai knows that Takenaka Hanbei has two secrets; He can see the future in his dreams, and he is in dire need of medical attention.

“Did you dream again?” Mitsunari quietly asks.

Hanbei sighs, “I did.”

There is always worry in Mitsunari’s eyes. Hanbei didn’t care much if it was because of Hideyoshi, of how his health would affect his liege lord and their whole clan. Mitsunari had only ever been devoted to him that he almost worshipped Hideyoshi like a god.

Hanbei laughs.

“What’s funny?”

Hanbei purses his lips together. He is the same.

“Mitsunari.” He replies. “I dreamt I was going to die an old man. Both of us, still by Hideyoshi’s side. That was what I dreamed about.”

And they fight to see that dream a reality, both of them in either side of Hideyoshi’s cavalry. Though bloodied and exhausted, they lead men to the battlefield. They roar with commands that lead their army to victories…

…until Hanbei falls, dragged into the dirt.

He barely hears Mitsunari scream his name, his vision starting to blur. Perhaps he was dreaming now. He remembers it clearly, the sun shining as if blessing the ground sacred despite all its ungodliness. Hanbei catches his breath, the magnificence almost too impossible to bear. He can finally believe it. It was the part of his visions that strongly recalled. His dream is coming true now, blood spilling from his mouth.

“Hanbei! Hanbei!”

He grips Mitsunari, smiling. “Hideyoshi *cough* is going to *cough* reign *cough* victorious.”

“Goddammit, Hanbei!” Mitsunari shakes him. “You said you were going to die an old man!”

The young samurai’s tears fall, and he cradles Hanbei in his hands, amongst all the chaos that surrounded them, Hanbei is at peace, talking about his lord’s divine rule in between fits of coughing. How sure he sounded, and how proud.

And as the Toyotomi clan raise their voices in a triumphant claim, Takenaka Hanbei closes his eyes.
