*pats self on back*
Yay! Congrats!
When to use flash cards: memorizing words/vocab, numbers, equations, names, dates, and verbatim facts or lines.
When to use mnemonic devices: memorizing steps of a process or sets of facts/information/people, especially in an order.
When to use concept maps or drawings: learning (rather than memorizing) relationships, processes, concepts, systems, etc.
When to use tables or charts: learning or memorizing systems (eg. conjugation in a foreign language), sets of sets of information (eg. people and when they lived and what they did), and other large/complex groups of information.
When to use songs: for learning or memorizing anything.
Disclaimer: this is a general guideline. If something else works for you, do it!
If you have a lot of tests going on or you are just lazy af, maybe this tips can help you.
Preparing to Cram for a Test
Find a workspace that is free of distractions and quiet enough to cram for a test.
Gather everything you need to cram for the test and place it in your workspace.
Try to limit distractions by shutting off your cell phone or making a vow not to check your email or social networks during your study session.
Make a list of exactly what you need to study, putting the highest priority items at the top of the list.
Decide what time you want to start cramming for the test and set an approximate time to finish. Try to allow yourself a 10-minute break for every 50 minutes of studying.
Set your alarm. In case you fall asleep while cramming
While cramming
1. Start at the beginning; don’t focus on the little details, though! Concentrate on the bigger picture – highlight the important facts that you think could be on the test. Also, remember to look closely at the vocabulary! It will obviously help your understanding if you know what a word means. Read the chapter summaries (they usually do a good job at summarizing the important points). If there are no chapter summaries, then skim through the text and write down key ideas.
2. Prioritize. This is the most important part of cramming. You have a very limited amount of time – you must use it as efficiently as possible. Get down to the nitty-gritty and only study what you think is worthy of being on the test.
· Focus on the main ideas and learn key formulas. Skip the details for now and only come back to them if you see that you have time after you have learned the key points.
· Don’t attempt to learn everything; focus on things that will get you the most points on the exam. If your professor said the essay will be 75% of your grade, you’re best off preparing for that and skipping the multiple choice.
3. Study effectively.
· Recite, recite, recite. Recitation will burn facts into your mind like no other study method. Recite the material out loud until you’re sure that you’ll be able to recall the information selected.
· Don’t just look at solved problems, do them yourself – Don’t solely rely on looking at problems that are worked out for you, especially in math and science. Trust me, you need to practice doing them yourself. Simply looking at the solution isn’t going to cut it when it comes to you working something out on a test.
· Grade your self-tests. Be honest with your grading. If you’re not, you will only hurt yourself when it comes to the actual test. Look at the questions you got wrong and compare those to your notes or flashcards.
4. If facts aren’t sticking, and studying isn’t going well, try some memorization strategies. The brain never forgets. Forgetting a piece of information is either the failure to properly store it, the failure to recall it, or the failure to store it in a way that it can be found. Practice some simple memorization techniques to help you supercharge your last-minute cram session.
· Try using a mnemonic device. That’s just a fancy word for “memory device,” meaning a quick and simple way to remember something. Remember when your teacher taught you ROYGBIV to help remember the sequence of colors in the rainbow? Making something into an acronym, like “ROYGBIV,” is a mnemonic device.
· Try using “pegs” to hang the information on. It could be making the information into a rhyme, relating it to an image you’re familiar with, or telling yourself a story about it you know you’ll remember. Try to take information that’s digested with one sense (words are digested through sight) and try to digest it in another.
· Try chunking. This just means organizing something under a category. For example, if you’re studying Finance, try to group stocks, bonds, funds, etc. under one big category, securities, and understand what that category means. Organize key ideas under concepts.
5. Move around, don’t just sit there – There is nothing worse for learning than sitting still at a desk for 6 straight hours. If you want to make your time spent studying more valuable, move around a bit. Every hour take a 5-minute break to walk around, get a drink, do a few jumping jacks, or basically anything that gets you out of your chair and moving around.
6. Get some sleep…
When you’re dead tired, it won’t make a huge difference if you’ve been studying for four hours as opposed to three and a half–after a certain point, your brain will just stop absorbing information. However, spending that extra half hour sleeping will make a big difference. Don’t underestimate the power of a good night’s rest. Before you begin studying, give yourself a cutoff time. Tell yourself that no matter what, you’ll be in bed by 2 AM (or whatever makes sense to you—this is when it’s important to know your own limits) and stick to it.
Small tips
· Make sure to stay hydrated! Water is good for your body and will nourish you while you cram.
· Instead of memorizing everything you pose your eyes on, try to understand what you’re reading. By doing this, you won’t have any problems with remembering information when doing your exam.
If you’re feeling a bit tired because of so much late-night studying, take a shower (preferably with cold water); it will help you to feel fresher and awake.
If you’re very limited on time, you don’t have to study absolutely everything. Just do the material that you think will get you the most marks.

How to NOT Get Bored While Studying
“School has started for me, and after only a few days, I’m already feeling pretty bored with the homework. Throughout this weekend’s fine Sunday I was very hard at work to find some ways to cheer myself up! Although it involved some relocating and redecorating (I know, it was supposed to be homework time), I was able to successfully finish everything I had planned to do.” Read more>>
