“I am nice.” Aurora told him, “I am nothing but nice.” She smiled so brightly at him. “I just know you Phillip. You don’t simply want to dance with me.” She knew him well enough for that.

“Oh come on Aurora… We both know how dower you are.” Phillip raised a brow but still had that cheeky smile on his face. “And you think you know me but I am not the same person anymore.”

“Only around you Phillip,” She replied doing her best not to roll her eyes but it was very hard not to with this game Phillip was playing. “All of my friends know I am as bright and cheery as sunshine.”

Phillip took her words seriously and frowned a bit. “So... I make you unhappy.” He didn’t know why he was so surprised. She had no reason to think of him otherwise. “That is unfortunate.” He said and tried to make it a little less obvious how disheartened he felt.

“Oh, Hello Phillip,” Aurora said with her smile particularly forced. She didn’t know why Phillip chose this moment to have their awkward dance, but she had been enjoying herself. “Of course I would love to dance with you, as always.” She turned and curtsied to the Duke’s son. “It was lovely your grace and I look forward to seeing the foaling.”

Phillip kept his polite smile but did not say anything even though to topic of horses really interested him as well. He would have to talk with the Duke’s son about it later. Phillip looked over at Aurora and reached out for her hand.

Aurora took Phillip’s hand and pasted on one of her courteous smiles. “So what does the honor of you asking me to dance without one of your parents standing over your shoulder?” she asked in a whispered hiss between her teeth.

“Who it kill you to be nice?” Phillip replied calmly. “I wanted to come dance with you.” He didn’t need to fake being happy or his smile. It was still there without even trying.

“You were, much to my own distress, and your mothers as well. It ruined much of you fine clothing being pushed into the mud like that.” Rose told him with a gentile smile. “Do enjoy your dance, but don’t push too hard. It may take time, she is very stubborn.” The queen warned as Phillip walked away.

Aurora was dancing with a Duke’s son. She was happily chatting with him about his prize horses. She did know a bit about horses and was actually enjoying this moment.

Phillip knew all to well just how stubborn Aurora was and realized he probably should push back a little bit with his own stubbornness. He took Queen Rose’s advice to heart. He was just going to have to convince Aurora he had changed. “Mind if I cut in?” Phillip asked politely with a smile. “I would love to give the Princess a dance.” He did not wish to anger the Duke or his son but he was determined to talk to Aurora in the musical chaos before anyone could hear or pay attention to what they were saying.

Rose smiled at him. “No disservice has been done, you were children.” She told him, “And now you are not, you cannot expect her to know your heart at once. Go, ask her to dance. Perhaps if you spend more than the time required by your position together she will start to notice you no longer wish to pull her braids and behead her dolls.”

Phillip smiled and laughed a little. He did love destroying her dolls. “Yes I was extremely good at that.” He didn’t know why that comment had made him feel better. It must have been one of those things you look back on and laugh. “The Princess deserves a dance it is her birthday.” Phillip grinned and walked in Aurora’s direction intending on pulling her away from whoever currently had her attention.

“What weighs so heavy on your heart dear?” Queen Rose had found him in his moping, the gift giving session had come to an end and dancing had begun. Aurora was being passed around as the lady of honor tonight every man seemed to wish to dance with her, every man that is but one.

“Queen Rose.” Phillip bowed before her and then stood up straight. “I fear I have done a great disservice to your daughter and my wife.” He said solemnly. “I had hoped that my time away had changed things between us but I still feel the distance.” Phillip paused. “She is putting on a show for everyone as she is supposed to but it disheartens me to know that she actually feels that way towards me… It seems that I am out of practice with my appearances. I apologize.”

Aurora had noticed, and was annoyed, for his sorrow had come off to her as petty temperament for the kiss. She truly wished he would grow up and stop thinking she was an icky little girl, or whatever it was that Phillip thought about her that used to make him run away when she tried to hold his hand in court. She’d hoped his time away had given him some sense of seriousness but it seemed she was hopeful in vain. Phillip was Phillip. Was he going to stick out his tongue at her on their wedding.

It was only though great force of practice that she kept herself from rolling her eyes at his departure and simply curtsied before the next guest arrived.

Phillip was distracted the rest of the gift giving session. He played his fake emotions well but he was no longer present. He didn’t know what to do at that point. How could he change what happened? Was the damage so ingrained that it was unfix able? He never hated Aurora. He was just immature and teased her mostly out of playfulness. How was he supposed to act when you marriage was set when Aurora was just a newborn. The whole thing was weighing heavily on him.
