But.
What if instead of horrible gruesome deaths, they actually took each other out. Verna said the bloodline would all die, she just didn't say how.
Granted this would be better if Roderick actually put care into building his family instead of his empire (doomed either way)
But it would have been interesting to see the kids all kill each other since they all had a bounty on their heads.
Rewatched TFOTHOU once again.
Considering Verna doesn't let Roderick die before she says so, a complete crack au where Verna is having to keep the entire group alive until she can actually let them die.
Leo accidentally overdoses? Wakes up in the morning with nothing but a killer headache.
The one time Freddie gets in an elevator and it drops nine stories with him in it? A broken bone and trauma.
Camille and her horrible parking skills plus driving under the influence gets her to accidentally drive herself off a cliff? She wakes up in the hospital with a concussion and a scratch.
Roderick: You're telling me Tammy can survive a car crash where she flipped over three fucking times but she couldn't survive fucking glass?!
Madeline: Well, its no different than the time Prospero had more alcohol in his bloodstream than water and yet was walking around perfectly fine.
Pym: If I may, there have been several instances of all the kids surviving incidents they shouldn't have. Seems their luck ran out.
It is so sad to me even two years later that the Usher family didn't even hesitate when it came to the informant.
That alone tells you how much they trust each other. And the fact they just point fingers at each other so quickly. Mostly at Perry but still. They think the worst of each other and wouldn't hesitate to pull the trigger.
Then again, Madeline and Roderick killed each other so I suppose it makes sense.
Another thought but if the Ushers ever got together for game night I genuinely believe if the older three went against the younger three, the older three would loose.
Because Leo actually gets along with Camille and Perry. And Camille is close to Leo. She isn't close to Perry but Perry isn't at the top of her shit list so it's easier to work with him. And there's enough trust from Perry and Camille that they'll listen to Leo.
Victorine and Tammy would absolutely throw hands yelling at each other what to do. Freddie would try and calm his sisters down and immediately be told to shut up by both of them.
So this spiraled into a spitball but I just realized smth funny.
So it's Mother's Day today and I was wondering if Perry, Leo, and Camille shoot their moms texts on Mother's day. Leo probably does. Perry may or may not. And if Camille were to, she'd just have flowers shipped to her mom's house.
But obviously Freddie and Tammy can't shoot a text ot send flowers to their mom. I doubt they visit her grave wherever it is. I think Victorine wouldn't be bothered to do either if her mom is alive or not.
And then ya know sometimes older siblings sorta raise their younger siblings and become like a second parent. But...the Usher's don't have that dynamic at all.
Freddie gets shitted on by all his siblings and they find him incompetent. Tammy couldn't be bothered to care at all (she was literally texting at the younger trio's funeral). Vic might have been chill with her younger siblings for a second before she was done with all of them ("I remember when they showed up. The Littles."). Leo was probably the closest thing to the parent sibling considering his relationship with Camille and Perry but ultimately he was the big brother. Camille hated all her Leos and non-Leos differently. And Perry was just the unwanted sibling no one liked, poor thing.
But now I wonder if the older Usher siblings especially Tammy would get Madeline Mother's Day stuff cuz Madeline was the other adult figure in their lives aside from Roderick

No because Leo being so distraught over Camille's death.
"A fucking robo-chimp rips off my sister’s face and I’m saddened!"
And like he hung around her enough to know the way she would think. He's grieving so hard he's even upset about what to wear for her (and Perry's) funeral.
"I can hear Camille’s voice in my head right now. “Satin is silk for poor people, no one should wear it to a funeral, unless they died in it.” Fuck’s sake."
And it's something that goes both ways. Camille being so comfortable with Leo that she'll get high with him and have a drink with him.
"Also, Perry’s dead, the family’s fucked, you’re the frontline of my PR campaign and you just took an edible?"
"You want some?"
"I mean, yeah, I want some."
And they're so close because they're able to banter without hostility and have a normal conversation with each other and Camille's even giving younger sister approval to Leo.
"I like him. I think he’s great. I think that you should bring him around to the family and introduce him to the family because he’s got a keeper bod."
"Please give me relationship advice. Or have your assistants do it."
Like they're so casual and relaxed in each other's presence and when you compare that to Freddie, Tammy, and Vic's conversation after the funeral of Perry, Camille, and Leo, the older three Ushers can't even have a normal conversation without it becoming hostile.
you guys ever think about how spirits of the dead by edgar allan poe is read at the usher descendants' funeral by someone who was paid to do so. because ushers have no one to speak at their funerals out of genuine care and grief for their lives

I think a lot about the fact the "Bastards" of the Usher family had the "bigger" funeral. When Perry, Camille, and Leo are buried it's a big thing. Everyone's there. Ex partner (Leo's boyfriend). The mothers, the press, other people probably high profile as well.
And the older three Ushers got together after. Fought of course. But Vic seemed to reminisce about the younger three, even affectionately calling them "The Littles"
What I focus on is that Madeline and Roderick seemed so...indifferent in a sense. Granted Roderick was already hallucinating by the time of the Bastards' funeral.
But Madeline was still sane.
Here she is at the funeral of her younger three niblings looking like she rather be anywhere else (+ Tammy texting away on her phone) and okay, granted she met Leo when he was eighteen and Camille when she was twenty (I think) but they were grown. She met Perry when he was sixteen but she viewed him as much as an annoyance as anyone else.
And then to her older three niblings' funeral she has that same indifference. She knew them though. She knew Tammy and Freddie when they were still kids. Victorine as well.
And Vic seemed shocked to find out the bodyguards were Madeline's doing.
Like the only other person who could have given a damn about them didn't.
If Perry's cuddle pile party had actually gone according to plan, and none of them started dropping like flies, what would be the chances of Perry's confession ending up an AITA Reddit cuz the entire family would have dug him a new one for creating a problem within the family lmfaoo

Au where at the family dinner, Roderick confesses he was dying. Here's the kicker, he tells the kids they're all going to die if he dies.
The family dinner is the Ushers sans Madeline sitting there thinking Roderick has lost his marbles.
No one takes it seriously until Perry turns up dead.
Vic is stressed out of her mind because the entire survival of the family depends on her.
Camille digging into the heart mesh and realizing they're all going to die very quickly.

There's lots of stories about people promising their future children in a deal with a witch or a devil or something, but it blows my mind that Roderick Usher already had two children when he made that deal. It wasn't hypothetical future children he was bargaining away, it was the two he was already actively raising. Insane. Evil man.
That's what makes it so horrifically fascinating. At least Madeline was hesitant about it.
He doomed them and then doomed the others that followed. And it's so interesting to me that he doesn't realize this until later. I would say Victorine was the start of the turning point and it's even more interesting that when he tries to blame Auggie for the kids' death they remind him that no, Augguie wasn't responsible for their death, Roderick was. Two of them had a chance, but their futures taken away by their father's actions. The others didn't have that chance they were doomed before they were even born.
And then not only did he massively screw up the lives of his kids, he actively turned them against each other and ruined them so much so that the only thing any of them cared about, at least most definitely the older three, was his approval and support. He taught his kids how to lick love from a knife. It's honestly surprising that none of them tried to turn against him.
The more I think about it, Roderick was incredibly stupid.
He grew up where it was mostly him and Madeline against the world. He has first hand knowledge of how much the two of them can accomplish together.
So why in the hell did he see his past, saw what him and Madeline did, and decide, "You know what would be a good idea? Pitting my kids against each other and forcing them to not rely on each other."
Like...what was the thought process here? His house had been divided as long as it's been standing.
If he had guided the kids to rely on each other, they would still likely be godawful people but like...they'd be very powerful godawful people. Because I'm like half certain if the Usher kids had been united instead of divided they probably would have been scarier than Roderick and Madeline. Because there's six of them.
Yeah, so I haven't seen it discussed much around but Verna is almost definitely an eldritch being from the 'Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket' but she's less Cthulhu and more monkey's paw/devil on the crossroads figure for awful people.
The ending of Arthur Gordon Pym has the following:
Their conversation in the final episode essentially confirms that:
He knows her
They saw each other during Arthur's expedition
she's from the above-mentioned chasm in the hollow earth
She left the chasm because she was curious about humanity
As the wiki states here, he basically 'submits willingly' in the show to her and kind of just excepts who she is. Of course, he declines to make a deal with her, and faces death/punishment quite willingly
Ultima-Thule, the race of people in the hollow earth in the show's continuity is from Poe's poem 'Dream-Land'
“I have reached these lands but newly From an ultimate dim Thule — From a wild weird clime that lieth, sublime Out of SPACE — out of TIME.”
which given some of the dialogue that Verna espouses should make it pretty clear
"The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket" even uses Antarctica as a setting which Lovecraft's At The Mountains of Madness would go on to homage.
This story is fairly clear proto-Cosmic Horror
It would have been so much funnier if Verna had stuck around for like the next 40smth years in a situationship with Madeline.
Mostly she just wants a front row seat to what these Ushers are gonna do.
Verna must be like a family cryptid tbh. Freddie, Tammy, and Vic were kids when they met her and absolutely were convinced this woman who hangs around their Aunt Mads is like unofficially married to her.
And then the 'Bastard Ushers' pop up and Verna is looking at Madeline like "Really?" "You would think having death constantly looming nearby would cause my brother to act more responsibly but no."
The Bastards are quickly roped into the "Verna is married to Madeline conspiracy" and life carries on as normal.
But this is where it gets funny.
Perry going to have the cuddle pile under acid rain, spots a lady in a cloak and face mask, follows her, and immediately dies of embarrassment because his aunt(?) showed up to his party.
Camille walking into RUE sees Verna at the desk, and thinks she's tripping balls from getting high with Leo.
Leo going to the shelter just staring at Verna, also thinking he's just high beyond comprehension.
Victorine going through the file half certain she's being messed with because this woman looks eerily like her aunt's wife(?)
Tammy absolutely certain it's sleep deprivation and she's having a conversation with her aunt who may or may not be speaking to her in the mirror.
Freddie also thinking he's hallucinating his aunt that is just so "I'm not mad, just disappointed" with him while she confesses she lowkey had a hand in his soon to be death as he's laying there on the floor about to get hacked into pieces.
Lenore confused why her great aunt is sitting on her bed sounding very close to tears
But also, "there is an informant in the family" is even more funny when Verna starts killing the kids. Pym passing out surveillance shots like "Why is Verna here?" Roderick sitting there like "I think it's her. The informant." Madeline rolling her eyes, "For fuck's sake, Roddie, you're dying so she's killing the bloodline."

Gate's Always open au
Based on Roderick's "If you’re an Usher, the gates are open. Period." line from episode 1.
I don't have the brain power rn to fully flesh it out. But the main idea is that the Usher siblings just lowkey invade each other's houses. Not so much "get out of my room" but like "bring some chips on the way over." The gates are open to family and family only.
Like Freddie is older than Tammy. Which means he probably moved out first. Tammy, still in high school, hanging out (taking refuge) in her brother's apartment to be away from their dad for a bit. They love the man, honestly, they do, but sometimes he's a bit much.
Vic, for now the baby sister, hopping between Freddie's place and Tammy's place when she's in some fancy university (assuming she met the family when she was like early 20s as its implied she was around for a bit before Leo, Camille, and Perry showed up) and sleeping on someone's couch during finals week because one of her siblings lived closer to campus.
Leo, for now the baby brother, spends a lot of time at Freddie's place because Freddie is eager to have a brother. (Not to say his sisters aren't great, but finally, there's another boy in the family.) Tammy's place is where he'll go to cook because she has the best kitchen to cook in and she doesnt mind it because he's not terrible. Vic, he goes to bother when the media hype around him is too much and he just wants to hide for a bit. (And she'll let him stay, she remembers what that was like.)
Camille, the baby sister and baby of the family for now, spends a lot of time at Leo's place. Leo's the closest one to her age and she feels safe with him. She's more intimidated by the older kids. But then she's over at Freddie's to occasionally hang out with her one year old niece (And Camille isnt the only one who babysits). She's going through Tammy's closet to borrow a white blazer cuz Tammy is the only sibling who dresses in muted tones most of the time. She's over at Vic's place watching shitty reality TV because Vic has the best TV at the time.
Then finally, Perry arrives. He's sixteen and he's almost a decade younger than his closest sibling age. But he's at Freddie's house and Freddie is teaching him to drive by doing circles in the driveway. He invades Tammy's house occasionally to steal her fruit because it just tastes better as does her tea, and Tammy's place is the best to pull an all nighter. He's casually breaking into Vic's place because he needs help with science homework and while the teachers could be bought, he really doesn't want to look stupid in front of the family like that. He'll be over at Leo's on the weekends playing video games with because Leo is normal and it keeps him grounded a bit. And then he's sometimes at Camille's because he doesn't know how to dress fancy and she's helping him pick out outfits for school events while coaching him how to campaign for things like Homecoming King and whatnot.
Like the Usher siblings who will invade Freddie's house for bowling. They invade Tammy's place to cook. Vic's place to do projects because she has a lot of space. Leo's apartment gets invaded for game night and Monopoly is banned. Camille is used to the sight of her siblings in her place because she has all those screens and horror movies with the siblings are always a delight. Perry doesn't get invaded as often as the others, youngest sibling perks, but if he is invaded by his siblings it's mostly just to see what he's up to and also because he's hungover after a night partying.
I am once again on the "it's a good thing they didn't love each other or it would hurt a lot more if they did, but imagine if they did" agenda.
