There's this one shot from FFVII Rebirth where we very briefly see Cloud from Barret's perspective.

I found it very funny and cute to realise that this is what Barret has been seeing the entire time he's known Cloud. It reframes so many of their interactions. Like... Oh my god... He's just a little boy... (T v T)

I've seen a couple of posts talking about the proper pronunciation of Cait Sith, (often carrying an air of irritated or snippy authority) and as a scottish lad myself, I don't care at all how you choose to pronounce it.

I don't think the proper pronunciation would work very well in the localised american english anyway.

I also think that the pronunciation they've gone with helps separate Cait from the original myth and define him as his own thing.

He's inspired by, but not completely beholdent to, the mythology.

He's not "Cat-sìth" the magical creature tied to a much broader mythology based in Scotland.

He's Cait Sith, the character from that popular JRPG.

I've been thinking a bit about Yuffie lately.

A few times now I've seen people calling her stuff like "an annoying useless brat" and expressing frustration with the remake games seeming to try and push her as cuter or more likeable, saying how it isn't working.

I agree that the remakes "softening" her a little is a shame, and it's clearly not going to convince some of the people who already dislike her otherwise anyway.

I personally think the arguments for why people dislike her are a little weak? I'm not trying to convince people to change their minds, but I'd like to offer my take on her.

(Keep in mind this is my interpretation, and there is always room for alternative takes)

Yuffie is a brat, but that's kind of the point. She's immature and abrasive and even steals the party's materia in her side story.

She's also annoying to some. I personally don't find her annoying at all, but that's subjective.

But I'm not convinced by people saying they don't like her because of her actions in the Wutai side story.

(Side note: from my research apparently the Wutai side quest is a little infamous on a gameplay level for getting people stuck and permanently losing all their materia if they can't defeat the final boss of the quest. Causing some people to restart their game in frustration. Which... wow, I think that probably informed some people's opinions on the character as well.)

Idk, maybe it's because it feels a little hypocritical in a fandom so thirsty for the main villain of the game to claim that it's a question of moral character. I understand that heroes are held to different standards than villains, but still.

Not to mention how the party's other members are hardly squeaky clean themselves.

Cloud is an ex-SOLDIER, Vincent is an ex-Turk, Barret's work with AVALANCHE put many people in danger and led to the plate falling, Reeve is an ex-Shinra executive, and Cid is a verbally abusive asshole who also worked for Shinra.

And I still like all of them just fine!

Why is Yuffie tricking the party and stealing their materia suddenly the limit? Yes, it hinders the party during their adventure, but it's ultimately resolved in the end, and everyone gets their materia back. (Another gameplay quirk that could contribute to people's annoyance is that you have to re-equip and sort everything manually)

It's also a totally optional side quest. You don't have to go through the trouble unless you don't know about it and stumble upon it by accident.

Yuffie's goals in stealing materia in general are somewhat noble, at least more than it seems on the surface.

She wants to help her nation fight their oppressors, and she thinks gathering enough materia will help with that. She also provides a bit of Wutai's perspective on Shinra and its violent military impact on parts of the world.

She's a teenager whose nation was recently at war, who is trying to do something when the higher-ups of her nation seem to do nothing.

I also think one of the deeper reasons that Yuffie wants to steal the materia could be her self-esteem and seeking approval.

Maybe I'm just misinterpreting, but to me, Yuffie reads as a pretty insecure kid deep down. I don't think she's wearing any masks like Cloud, I think she is being true to herself still.

Her annoying behaviour could be read as a bid for attention. It could even be a case where she feels so desperate for it that even negative attention counts because it at least means she isn't being overlooked or ignored.

All of the posturing about how cool and skilled she is reads as her trying to convince herself as well as others.

Maybe she calls herself The Great Yuffie Kisaragi because no one else will.
