Also here's a collection of warmup doodles from the past couple days! Asriel's harrowing encounter, Krisk and @wishua-dv's Clover from Tetrarune (Go read tetrarune!) aurafarming and Noelle who just got here.

Today's warmup sketch was more Alter Ego stuff. Namely, the special Sunday episodes of Mr. (Ant) Tenna's TV Time! The shopping special: Amazing Commodities!

They decided to have a sit down with each other's mothers... Though one of them was a nice chat at the diner- the other was a formal summons to the Mayor's office. Dessriel warmup of an idea I had in my brain for a bit.

Hey Akane I wanted to ask what do you think of the idea that Aqua sorta represents a younger child version of Kris? Now I’m not saying they are Kris but they do seem to act sorta like how Kris was implied to act when they were younger there’s also both of their affinity for knives and it also plays into the little theory that Kris originally had the patience/Cyan soul prior to the red one not to mention I’m pretty sure they share the same blue color

My feelings on the matter is that ALL the flowers represent an aspect of Kris in some way. Aqua is just the one people notice first.

Seth = Kris' gender identity (there is a whole Cafe dialog about it)

Yellow = Kris' internalized guilt and love for cowboys (hinted at in easily missable dialog)

Blue - Kris' grace and femininity as well as their love for art (piano)

Green - Kris' penchant for not speaking

Orange = Kris' identity as a human living among monsters (the mouse claiming she is human)

Flowery - Kris' role as both the party leader and foil towards us and the other heros.

Pink = direct analog to Kris' relationship with the Player (us)

One thing I feel like doesn't get talked about a lot when it comes to Deltarune is what the Dark World is, outside of a literal in-universe phenomenon or the potential bringer of the apocalypse or the secret subject of study by someone we presume to be W.D. Gaster:

the world of imagination and play.

It's brought up a few times in the game, mostly via Ramb. He reminisces about Kris and Noelle, as younger children, coming up with make-believe stories about a playing card fighting a laptop. Ramb himself, of course, is only animate in the Dark World in the way that he is because Kris used to play with an electrical socket like it was a toy, an extremely on-brand thing for a child to do.

The first chapter mostly being populated by toys feels deliberate. So does the fact that everything gets a potential Darkner, the same way that an imaginative child can give a plug a British accent for some reason. There are doohickeys and boondoggles everywhere, for those with eyes to see.

I was going to remark on this anyway, but I'm thinking about it again because of the new chapter. For the first time, we see a fully lucid adult Lightner in the Dark World. And he... just doesn't engage with it in the same way.

Flowery tries everything he can to entertain Asgore, invoking specific memories and preferences of his. And Asgore plays along for a while... but ultimately, he doesn't really care. He can't. He's thinking about his family. He's thinking about his job. He's thinking about his, uh, research on the black shard that was found at the original crime scene. I guess.

This isn't to say I think Toby is making some grand statement about how adults aren't imaginative, or can't engage in escapist fantasy. But compared to how the $!$? Squad make friends, go on silly detours, and ultimately save the world, Asgore engages with the Dark World in a fundamentally different and much less childlike way.

It's always a hard sell for me when a story insists its heroes need to be adolescents. But in Deltarune's setup, it makes total sense.

What is UNDERTALE Alter Ego?

UNDERTALE Alter Ego is an UTYDR au that seeks to take characters, concepts and places and lay them out in a formula similar to the last three games of the Persona series!

What's a Persona Series?

The Persona Series is a set of games made by Atlus, starring high school students happening upon shadow worlds that reflect society and awakening to the special power of persona- a physical manifestation of their inner self, to defeat an oncoming threat.

Who's in it?

The story follows Frisk- a sixteen year old, moving in with their foster family: The Dreemurrs (Toriel, Asriel and Chara). Frisk's party consists of new friends, Susie and Noelle, their foster siblings as well as Clover and Kanako from UNDERTALE Yellow and interpretations of the other 5 human SOULs; Assisting the party there's Flowey: The group's guide through Mt. Ebott. Outside of the shadow world there are the characters Frisk will meet and befriend- A multitude of characters from UNDERTALE, UNDERTALE YELLOW and DELTARUNE! Assisting Frisk will be an enigmatic man who resides over The Dark Room: W.D Gaster and his assistant, a strange humanoid figure, known only as The Vessel. Other UTYDR characters will of course feature outside of social links, party members or shopkeepers :).

Hold on- Ebott? Like the mountain?

Yep! Mt. Ebott is no longer the prison for the monsters who lost the war so long ago- It is now the epicentre of many dangerous beings- Shadows; They are a tangible, dangerous, yet alluring threat. The Human and Monster war did not end in their banishment- it instead ended peacefully with a treaty formed. Monsters have lived on the surface peacefully since.

Will Persona characters cameo?

They may appear in the background- Though all of the shadows/personas frisk obtains are from the series (bar their starting ones.)

What will you use from UT and Persona?

The characters will all pretty much be from UNDERTALE, Yellow or DELTARUNE with any original ones seeking to fit into that. As well as that, the locations and dynamics between characters will be very reminiscent of UNDERTALE's- All of the floors of Ebott will very very very closely resemble the locales from UNDERTALE! The battle style, plot structure, social links and- of course, the ability to use a Persona will be adapted from the series. The AU will take plenty from Persona 3, 4 and 5- Though tonally we're looking more at a Persona 4 here.

So what is this? Will it be a game? an animated series? a complicated board game your family won't play with you?

No, No and... Not yet. The AU will be presented in the form of a... Webcomic! There'll be the main comic with all the plot and junk as well as side Social Link comics where Frisk befriends various other people mentioned prior! We're also considering opening in-character asks during breaks :D If all goes to pot, we'll make it into a visual novel, though-

Who joins when? What happens?! Cocoapowder real?! Who's the ___ arcana?!?

We'll be releasing plenty of supplementary art and details about the AU as we work on everything so pay attention to those! We've already posted about the arcanas and everything ^-^

HOLD ON!? What's with all the changes!? I thought DELTARUNE stuff wasn't being included?!

So- If you've been with the blog for a while- First off, thanks! Second off, we had a little bit of a break from working on the AU and in that time... We've sort of realised we wanted to rearrange things, take things out, put them in and sort things out so that the story and AU as a whole is better- and more importantly- A story we want to tell with confidence in it. The main changes are the party members, Frisk's design and merging with some aspects of Kris, the social link characters, the dark room attendant and Sunny being the navigator. I do understand people have a great attachment to the previous era but... I think what we've got on the way is better :)

When's it coming out? I crave a date!

Well, I'm flattered but we're taken. Secondly, it'll be released in arcs, we can't put a solid deadline or time frame on it but we're working pretty hard to get as much done as possible- again, patience :D

Will Jack Frost be in the Comic?

... yes.
