I instantly think this is a Mr Hyde situation where Hakuba is the parts of himself that Cavendish represses- the escape from the perfection that is Cavendish- instead of a separate personality it's Cavendish himself unmasked. It seems like he'd care about and have a lot more internal strife about the actions of Hakuba ruining his life if not

But like. That's an elementary level simple reading and I haven't even finished Dressrosa yet so I may very well be wrong

I can't help but read this as "he doesn't have any qualms around the celestial dragons because the mystique of their power can't exist for him because he once had it and had no reason to find it odd" in other words "the celestial dragons are normal people to him and everyone else is still subhuman" but I might be proven wrong

sometimes I hear people bitching about post-war (is that the correct name for the arc? idk) arc for being pointless and not telling us anything we dont already know and I think the biggest problem is that people see it as "ace's backstory being put after ace's death" when thats very clearly not what its trying to do.

its luffy's backstory. thats what it is. about 500 chapters into his series we get the backstory of the main character

he starts the series as an enigma. a wildcard. an untochable ever-smiling parable. a force of nature. an unconventional hero.

then he turns from the one that is teaching others to the one taught. the alabasta saga has him learning to be a leader and going from larger than life to a very small drop in a vast sea. vivi humbles him, crocodile humbles him.

later, even after all that, water 7 proves that his leadership can still faulter, his strongest trait, his emotional intelligence can falter...

he grows and we grow used to him. we understand him in all his impulsivity in all of his self centered shortsighted reckless unyielding love and we understand how it drives him to defeat impossible foes and topple tyrants

and then he fails to save his friends

and then he fails to save his brother

and for the first time in the series people die for real.

the arc is worldbuilding. it goes along with the continuingly darkening tone of one piece to show no place is free of corruption and inequality. it recontexualizes elements that were already there and expands on them.

something something post-war flashback is set-up for dressrosa and it add to and also directly improves the themes of childhood, (especially childhood abuse and mistreatment) as well as iniquality (and how being poor and despearate is seen as a moral failing while the rich and powerful commit atrocities of far greater magnatude.)
