 daph  understands  where  brooke  is  coming  from.  she’s  heard  the  same  sort  of  thing  from  grieving  families  before.  so  she  puts  on  her  best  comforting  face  and  does  her  best  to  be  reassuring.  ❝  first  and  foremost,  i’m  not  a  wannabe.  myself  nor  the  rest  of  mystery  inc.  aren’t  amateurs.  this  is  our  livelihood  and  our  passion.  ❞  she  says,  keeping  her  tone  light.  she  and  the  gang  aren’t  making  a  podcast  like  the  alluded  to  piper  shaw.  a  wolf  in  sheep’s  clothing  she’d  been,  daphne  had  watched  it  all  unfold  through  the  news  and  been  absolutely  disgusted.  

 ❝  i  don’t  blame  you  at  all.  you  deserve  to  be  hesitant  about  not  wanting  new  people  to  come  in  and  bug  you  when  the  last  time  that  happened,  it  was  filled  with  terror.  ❞  she  speaks  genuinely,  hoping  she  comes  off  like  that,  but  also  that  she  doesn’t  just  sound  like  she’s  pleading  so  she’ll  be  believed  and  let  into  the  inner  circle.  she  just  wants  brooke  to  be  at  ease.

familiar  with  the  taste  for  morbidity.     a  𝚜𝚞𝚜𝚙𝚒𝚌𝚒𝚘𝚞𝚜  interest  in  the  killings  over  past  decades,       even  more  so  with  thepresent  mall  massacre.    ryan  torres,     better  known  as  the  𝚜𝚔𝚞𝚕𝚕  𝚖𝚊𝚜𝚔  𝚔𝚒𝚕𝚕𝚎𝚛  in  the  circling  papers  all  over  town.       just  another  shadysider  possessed  by  the  witch.       his  beliefs  were  skeptical.

his  gaze  falters  against  her  serious  tone  to  the  mask  she  holds  in  hand,      when  his  gaze  lifts,     it’s  with  disappointment.       a  heavy  sigh  of  mockery,         he’s  not  sure  what  he  was  expecting  but  he’s  not  impressed.              features  scrunch  momentarily,      the  regret  for  his  𝚒𝚖𝚙𝚎𝚗𝚍𝚒𝚗𝚐  𝚌𝚛𝚞𝚎𝚕𝚝𝚢  of  his  remarks.

❛❛    wow.    really  managed  to  outdo  yourself  with  this  one.    ❜❜         a  pause,❛❛    i  mean,      what  would  i  do  without  you?       i  would  of  never  known  if  you  𝚑𝚊𝚍𝚗'𝚝  told  me,     with  it  plastered  in  the  papers  and  all  anyone  ever  talks  about  and  all. so,    you  gonna  buy  it?  ❜❜  

 the  costume  shop  is  mostly  deserted.  there's  only  one  or  two  other  people  in  there,  so  daphne  doesn't  feel  like  she  should  be  too  hesitant  about  what  she's  saying.  if  the  store  were  more  crowded,  maybe  she'd  be  more  reserved  with  her  speech,  but  it  wasn't,  so  she  didn't.  ❝  you  don't  have  to  be  such  an  ass.  ❞  she  says,  rolling  her  eyes.  ❝  i  just  didn't  know  if  you'd  seen  it.  thought  it  was  interesting.  the  same  mask  the  killer  wore  and  all.  ❞

 she  didn't  mind  being  shot  down,  though.  she  still  thought  it  was  interesting.  this  was  her  line  of  work,  after  all.  she  investigated  crimes.  she  wanted  to  know  more  about  them,  and  seeing  what  the  mask  looked  like  up  close  was  just  one  of  those  things  that  helped  her.  she  was  a  visual  learner.  she  needed  to  see  it  to  really  understand  just  what  about  it  made  it  such  a  terrifying  thing  to  witness.  she  could  see  it  now,  understand  how  that  mask  charging  toward  her  might  cause  her  to  panic.  especially  with  a  knife  in  one  hand.  

 ❝  it's  a  pretty  good  tool  for  me.  y'know,  for  figuring  out  the  logistics  behind  the  attack.  it's  another  key  element  that  adds  to  the  overall  effect.  ❞

 ❝  i  was  hoping  to  get  through  interviews  with  the  lakewood  six  today  so  i  could  compile  all  my  notes  and  start  a  write-up  of  the  case.  you're  the  last  one.  well,  except  for  jake.  haven't  seen  him  around  anywhere...  ❞  she  says,  clipboard  in  hand,  folder  beneath  it,  pen  behind  her  ear.  she  was  ready  to  make  notes,  get  everything  she  needed.  to  follow  up  on  everything  that  had  happened  in  lakewood,  she  needed  to  finish  this  file  on  the  case.
