" excuse me, why did he invite me ?! for all i know you're just some weirdo who showed up here because you can't stay away from me. " she scoffed, as they were already being dragged along by a jonnie who was, quite obviously, high out of his mind. gone were her thoughts of this being some kind of set up - instead it seemed rather apparent that it had most likely been a mistake. " everybody knows the big dipper, idiot, " she grumbled. at least she was pretty sure she knew it. almost entirely sure. like 95% at least. turning to sunny, she shot him a doubtful look. " fantasize about your hair ? like what ? about ripping it out ? " maybe a touch violent but what else was new when it came to these two.
dawn was so close to simply turning her back on this entire charade but jonnie seemed deadset on making it work and dragged them along to the docks. once they had reached the boat of his desire, jonnie got halfway in, looking very much as if he was going to fall at any given time. that was certainly the only reason dawn held on to the hand he was stretching out in her direction. she wasn't usually one for too much physical affection after all. " not all bad ? gee, thank you, such high praise. " voice clearly ironic, she had only just gotten a good grip on jonnie when he was already slipping away again, falling on his ass in the boat. now, there was not much that would make dawn laugh, but this sight ?! she couldn't help it, laughing alongside jonnie, who was apparently also more so amused than hurt. however, this was also her last opportunity to ditch on this entire ... event. and she truly did want to but her resolve was slightly stifled, both by the concerning way jonnie was handling the boat and his words about them being afraid of boats. she wasn't afraid of boats ( maybe of the swans on the lake... a little bit ) but was she really going to run away from getting on the same boat as sunny ? she had been invited here after all and while she hadn't been very excited about it in the first place, wouldn't it be too ridiculous to let sunny's presence deter her from this ?!
some part of her already pointed out the flaws in that logic, as jonnie mentioned about the joints and his phone. she didn't care much about the phone but the joints... would certainly make this a more tolerable situation. with a sigh, she nodded, turning on sunny. " what's it gonna be ki-sun ? are you gonna go and cry into your pillow about me stealing your bestie or are you coming ? " she asked, a slightly mocking grin on her lips, before she turned and jumped down into the boat herself. a decision was made. " you better be sharing those joints ! " walking up to where jonnie was standing at the steering wheel, she watched him with narrowed eyes. " you know shit all about boats, don't you ? "
how exciting. finally, some use for ki-sun's otherwise useless planetary science bachelor's degree and hours binge watching neil degrasse tyson videos on youtube ( i.e. nerd-splaining how one finds the big dipper ). sunny looks up at the sky as he speaks, "yeah. ursa major is actually one of the easiest patterns to spot from new york. just north. it's pretty clear tonight too. oh! we can also see ursa minor. maybe even venus, if it hasn't set yet." distracted by his own ramblings, his vitriol toward dawn is replaced with genuine interest just on the topic of stargazing. though, sunny's poor attitude returns as soon as dawn turns to him again. he narrows his gaze, "whatever you say, but you're the weird one hanging out with my best friend. pretty strategic way to get close to me. " heaven forbid he similarly dares to even speak to the other members of r.a.d. oh, wait — he definitely does.
much like every other time he finds himself forced to be around dawn, sunny cannot imagine just walking away from the situation entirely. allow dawn to have a great evening with his best friend. that would've been too easy. cowardly, even. it'd be an admission of defeat. "i know we'll have fun. but dude, she sucks the fun out of fucking everything." he whines to jonnie, as if the person in question wasn't standing right next to him. after a failed attempt to somehow stabilize jonnie with just one hand, his best friend slips right out of his grasp and falls into the boat. a reluctant chuckle escapes him — watching jonnie topple over and laugh foolishly. that was enough to get sunny to agree. plus weed, stargazing, and jonnie bumbling around were some of his favorite things. "fine. i'll go. not fucking afraid of boats. " just this once, he chooses to ignore dawn's use of his full name simply rolling his eyes in response. "you could never steal my best friend." he says, struggling to make his step off the dock and into the boat look as cool and intentional as his words.
after a somewhat wobbly entrance, ki-sun settles at the back of the boat — allowing jonnie and dawn to deal with steering. "not a damn thing." sunny echos dawn, willing to guess that jonnie didn't have some secret boating experience he didn't know about. he pulls out a blue lighter from his back pocket. "but, i'm sure he can figure it out. right, jonnie? i mean, i definitely don't know anything about boats. what about you? are you a boating expert, dawn?" for some reason, sunny has a quite a bit of confidence in jonnie's ability to build boating skills in a matter of minutes. one thing's for sure, sunny had no interest in trying to figure out how to drive the thing himself. it was better for him to just supervise. " gimme. i need to be high to survive this. " he says to jonnie, making an unspecified gesture for one of the joints.
jonnie found their banter funny and it was easily seen whenever the three of them managed to be in the same room . he knew they didn’t get along and while it should’ve deterred him as sunny’s best friend to stay away from dawn , he just couldn’t . she was magnetic and something about being near her lit jonnie up ( things he would never tell her or else he’s sure she would somehow find a way to make fun of him for it as long as they both lived ) , whether it was good or bad though … he didn’t know , though he would say it was about 50/50 most of the time . “ okay , but what if you didn’t know , then what ! ” jonnie’s sober mind not supplying that even three year olds could probably point out the big dipper , especially not when sunny starts talking . fondness bubbles in his chest listening to his best friend talk about something he’d been passionate about other than music ever since he’d known him , “ you sound so sexy when you talk all spacey and stuff , sun . doesn’t he dawn ? i’m swooning as we speak ! ”
clearly , he can’t appease both of them , but he’s all but willing to try considering he wants to get this little trip going . “ not bad is the best you’re gonna get unless you want me to be throttled ?! ” he mutters in dawn’s direction , trying to be as quiet as possible to not have sunny hearing him , though that seems entirely impossible considering the distance between all of them is slim . knowing he has both of them in on his master plan , a sweet giggle leaves his lips , “ i love seeing the both of you fight over me , please keep it up i need our throuple to thrive and there’s enough of me to go around , i’m like bottomless mimosas or whatever ! ”
with his hands on the wheel , vibration from the motor revving up his excitement , “ hey ! ” an offended tone in his voice as he looks at the two of them , “ even if i didn’t know things about boats , which i do ! ” he’s lying straight through his teeth , “ like sunny said i could figure it out , okay ?! ” can he though ? it’s obviously clear he knows jack shit by how choppily he backs the boat out the dock , jerking them forward and backward a bit before he gets a handle on things — well as much of a handle as he can considering he hasn’t even stepped foot on a boat since he was in college at some random frat party . the rational part of his brain is wondering why the hell he’s doing this , but the fun part of his brain wins as usual as he drives them out towards the middle of the lake , swerving slightly as takes his hands off the wheel to happily hand sunny one of the joints from his pocket before remembering he’s handling a motor vehicle and he needs to pay attention .
when he parks the boat in the middle of the lake , he gets up from his chair , overjoyed with his boating abilities ( he’s not sure either of them would agree ) as a grin sets on his face as he looks at the two of them , “ now who’s gonna help me anchor this thing ? ” he says , waddling past them to look under the cushions , “ i don’t even know where it is … maybe i should’ve looked before i got on , huh ? ” he turns towards them plopping down on the area he was just looking , “ what if we just free floated ? do you think we’d crash at some point ? it seems like a pretty big lake , so i think it should be fine , right ? ”
