Suddenly thinking of 1989’s The Little Mermaid and you know what, give Eric some props here because he had the weirdest fucking hour of his life—

Wakes up from hypnosis where he was about to marry a woman he’s never seen before with his mystery girl’s voice, the instant he wakes up then the cute girl he’s actually fallen in love with now has that voice. Then she drops to the floor and has a fish tail, and then the first girl is suddenly cackling “too late!” and bursting out of her skin. So it turns out she’s actually an octopus woman who drags herself over to the real mystery girl - who’s a mermaid?! They’re real?! - and taking her back into the ocean. And Eric has no idea what’s going on here but okay, one of these women is clearly evil and he needs to go after his mystery girl.

And all of this happens/he realizes what he has to do within like, a single minute.

Prior to this he was just living out a sweet romance after having a Meet Cute with a shipwrecked girl, but okay, guess he’s involved in whatever the fuck this is. Acting first, questioning later.

And this is all before the kaiju attacks.

And let's also remember that Eric is one of the few Disney heroes who actively, deliberately murdered the villain.

He went "Okay then" and killed.

I would say killed the villain, not murdered. Murder implies that it was premeditated and out of malice. Eric was defending his girlfriend's life while Ursula was attempting to murder her. He was well and fully justified in his actions.

In legal terms, 1st degree murder is any murder that is premeditated, even if the premeditation was only for a minute. 2nd degree murder involves no premeditation but resulting in a deliberate action to cause harm. 3rd degree/manslaughter is purely accidentally and/or a result of gross negligence.

With this in mind, it's safe to say that Eric did murder Ursula, as he deliberately steered the ship to impale her with the bowsprit, but would be pardoned on account that he was defending the life of another (Ariel).

One of the first pieces I made for Rapunzel’s murals for the movie Tangled. I had been struggling mightily to find a style that felt authentic to an astutely observant, curious girl locked in a tower. I procrastinated a lot, circling the literal blank page, unable to arrive at anything that felt true.

What finally shifted things was going inward. I started using my own daily life as inspiration and connected with Rapunzel as a living, breathing friend—someone I knew well and had just spent a weekend with. (I’ll share those sketches on my Substack soon, I promise.) It was only then that the block dissolved. Rapunzel felt less like a character and more like a guide, leading me to medieval illuminated manuscripts and to Charley Harper’s bright, coherent illustrated biology books from the 1960s. Somehow, those two seemingly disparate influences came together and shaped the visual language of the murals.

I return to this image whenever I’m blocked (a frighteningly frequent occurrence) as a reminder to keep going inward. There is always something beautiful waiting to be uncovered. Thank you for being here - more of this soon!

The discussion around Ariel TheLittleMermaid baffles me bc if my dad literally destroyed a bunch of stuff I collected in front of me in a terrifyingly violent display of anger and I had a witch offer me an out if I could score the boy I thought was hot, my name would be on that dotted line before you can say "poor unfortunate soul". A Beauty and the Beast AU where Belle realizing she loves Beast isn’t at some dramatic climactic event but during some randome everyday moment. Like, she’s filing her nails and just kinda glances up at him and he’s like doing something just as dull and it just kinda dawns on her that she loves him but she doesn’t voice it cause she isn’t exactly ready to confront thoes emotions and what they mean so she goes back to filing her nails but then is starts raining glitter and Beast is defying gravity in a glowing ball of light and the castle is changing back and everyone becomes human again. Then everyone is left in silent moment of shock and confusion and Belle, being completely unaware of what it takes to break the curse, is just staring around in horror while everyone freshly humanized comes running into whatever room she and Beast were in (probably the library) expecting to see something other than human Beast in a heap on the ground and Belle across the room in a chair frozen in shock and confusion and everyone just kinda looks at each other for a couple of seconds not realy sure what to say cause nobody is entirely sure what happened other than the curse was broken. Then Beast finaly gets up and looks around and realizes what this means and looks at Belle and is just like “you love me?” And Belle is just like “wat?”
