Fandoms! With some insight into why I like/connect with them

Homestuck: This one is purely based on nostalgia and a love for creation myths. I read this as a teen and it was a defining work of fiction for that time in my life. It’s what forced me to start coming to terms with my queerness. Namely the possibly that i might be bi and trans masc. Of course I’m still fighting to figure myself out but Homestuck is what got that ball rolling. It also was my first exposure to sibiling abuse and toxic family situations that more closely resembled my own.

X-men & Alpha flight: I’ve been in this fandom for less than a year so my knowlege base is pretty shit & is mainly informed by the 70’s 80’s & 90’s stuff plus creators like Nikhil Clayton and the Cerebro podcast. Aka the kinky gay soap opera political comentary stuff. Not the toxic mcu bro shit I was exposed to as a kid. I really love the older comic book style and sometimes the “newer” art styles mess with my head or just squick me out. Idk why. Lots of it is objectively very good, beautiful even! But there’s something about Kitty Pryde with straight or mildly wavy hair that messes with my brain. It hits somewhere between uncanny valley and parody. I read x men like a period peice. Like you cant take Magneto, a holocaust survivor, into the 2010’s or 20’s and keep him as being in his 30’s-50’s it’s weird. Like at a certain point it becomes a new story with these immortal beings instead of everyday (albeit extraordinary people).

TDAC: It’s got the horror and existentialism of homestuck with beautiful charchter studies and facinating interpersonal conflict. It’s also a modern animation masterpiece. Seriously watch this shit on a tv if you get the chance, the animation is gorgeous and benefits from a bigger screen.

D/C plus Deadpool and Spider-man: I think these are linked together in my brain because they were the only superhero content I was consuming as a teen. This is a smaller fandom of interest of mine where my knowledge of the comics proper is very second hand or from movies. Aka it’s is super fuzzy and possibly wrong. If you disagree with my takes because of something that feels obvious to you feel free to share but please be nice about it. Like feel free to info dump or politely correct me, I want to learn and I appreciate people sharing their passion for these stories with me.
