I think its funny that Donnie is the one assigned the "emotionless, never cries" title when he frankly cries more than Leo ever does. Leo is far more expressive, sure, but I can count on my hands the times Leo sheds tears and this includes the movie.
He does have the goofy crying moments like everyone else, but he definitely cries less than the others in general.
Specifically in the movie, even upon losing raph, even upon being berated, even upon being beaten, he only lets himself actually cry when he knows his family is safe and away from danger.
Which enforces his mask, because he usually sheds tears when no one is directly looking at him too.

An analysis of ✨️Othello von Ryan✨️
Because Donnie has been my favorite ninja turtle for years, I love Shakespeare and have specifically been on an Othello kick recently
Disclaimer: this is not to equate the real experiences of pocs and the racism discussed in Othello with the experience of being nonhuman; this is the context of the allusion to Othello in regards to Donnie's character and the Purple Jacket Episode
OKAY time for the fun part
So Donnie quotes Shakespeare quite a few times in Rise. In Lair Games, he quotes Hamlet: "to thine own self BEAT LEO." In the Purple Jacket episode when he's letting go of the jacket he combines two: "Fare thee well, my synthetic darling, I hardly knew ye (a misquotation of Hamlet's "Alas Poor Yorrick" speech) but parting is such sweet-" (Romeo and Juliet Act 2 scene 2). Which makes sense, he enjoys books, of course he's gonna quote the BARD of all authors
But his choice to name himself Othello von Ryan when introducing himself to the Purple Dragons is very important. I don't know if "von Ryan" is an allusion to anything, so I'm gonna stick to the Othello part because that's straightforward.
When the episode starts, Donnie is telling April that she's lucky to go to school and sees it as a place of intellectual superiority that he is barred from being, you know, a mutant ninja turtle. He can't go anywhere without being disguised, and, clearly, by this episode and in general, he wants to fit in with people he thinks he can relate to. It is basically jealousy, which is a major theme of Othello.
Donnie has this underlying jealousy and insecurity in Rise especially. He worries that if mystic powers can do what he can, the others won't need him anymore. He craves external validation, specifically from adults, and when the opportunity arises to fit in, he takes it.
The idea of jealousy stemming from not belonging is in Othello, too. One of the strings Iago pulls on is Othello's interracial marriage to Desdemona, the fact that she deceived her father to be with him, his status as an outsider for being a Moor, etc. He uses a lot of stereotypes to make his point, and it makes Othello nervous, resulting in jealousy. Not just about Othello's status, but Cassio and Desdemona's, too. He sets himself up as a trustworthy influence, and Othello becomes reliant on him for the supposed "truth." When Desdemona, Emilia, or Lodovico try to argue that Desdemona does not deserve Othello's cruel treatment of her, he doesn't listen because Iago has complete control over Othello's perception of reality.
Where Othello sees Iago as a source of trust, Donnie sees the Purple Dragons as a source of acceptance. So he doesn't listen to April's warning about them (that were grossly understated) and ends up being betrayed and having his tech stolen to be used for crime. Of course, since this is not a Shakespearean tragedy, things work out for him, and he still has acceptance with April, but there's similar sort of ideas.
The handkerchief and the jacket also prove this. In the play, the handkerchief was given to Desdemona by Othello, and it was initially for his mother, who wanted him to give it to his wife. It is a symbol of devotion, loyalty, and, most of all, security. So when Iago gets his grubby little racist hands on it, everything starts to backfire. The jacket is a symbol of societal acceptance and validation. Donnie has to give it up at the end of the episode because the acceptance of the Purple Dragons was not good for him. Both objects are representative of what Othello and Donnie want and it is turned against them by people who want to use them for their own gain. In Rise, by giving it out under false premises and likewise in the play, by taking it away.
It's a pretty neat detail because of COURSE Donnie's cover name is an allusion to classic literature (and one from the Renaissance like the artist he gets his name from). And there's a lot of meaning you can get from it, especially with how the episode plays out

"shipping and blorbofication are not inherently at odds with understanding a story's deep themes" and "some people can't grasp the themes of a story because they never learned how to engage with stories outside of the lens of shipping and blorbofication" are two statements that can coexist

I present you my "Donnie, the Emotionless, Absolutely Never Crying Badboy" collection:
and, of course:
Yep, definitively no emotions here!
Commodore (you know, the 64 folks) is releasing a flip phone. “No social media, no browser. Runs 99% of Android apps (without Android). T9-style texting adds mindful friction. Audiophile grade HD Audio.”
i thought my laptop was on its last leg because it was running at six billion degrees and using 100% disk space at all times and then i turned off shadows and some other windows effects and it was immediately cured. i just did the same to my roommate's computer and its performance issues were also immediately cured. okay. i guess.
so i guess if you have creaky freezy windows 10/11 try searching "advanced system settings", go to performance settings, and uncheck "show shadows under windows" and anything else you don't want. hope that helps someone else.
hey this is apparently helping a lot of people! adding that on top of this you can also go to settings > personalization > colors and turn off transparency to also boost performance. this wasn't the Big Fix for me but might as well do that too if you're trying to optimize.

Ok I know we joke about this but I just went to the settings and first clicked "adjust for best performance" and then re-checked only 1 box:
"Smooth edges of screen fonts"
My computer was running hot before I turned everything off; the office I'm in is very warm, I could feel the heat of my CPU through the keyboard. The fans were going, not as loud as they usually get, but they were still blasting.
Y'all.
I can barely feel the warmth through the keyboard now. It's been like 2 minutes. The fan is nearly silent.
Click the Windows key and start typing "System settings", and "View Advanced system settings" will pop up. Then click "Settings" under Performance:
Then you'll see this:
TURN IT ALL OFF.
I turned "Show window contents while dragging" and then turned that off again. It's up to you.
My computer is so quiet and reasonably-temperatured now and I barely notice a difference in utility, why is windows like this
maybe I can even play computer games again
The second best thing you can do for a Win10 computer is turn off whatever unnecessary services it's decided it needs to run in the background always. Some services it does need, but others are useless. Here's an article that goes into step by steps.
10AppsManager lets you uninstall bloatware. Winaero Tweaker lets you disable crap like Cortana/Copilot, ads, telemetry, internet search results when you search from the taskbar, and all kinds of other stuff, plus it gives you lots of other little options that are just nice to have (like, it can restore the old MS Paint program in place of Paint 3D). Both are totally free.
Oh, and check your startup programs in the Task Manager tab to make sure your computer isn't automatically starting eight million programs every time it boots. But I think people mostly know about that. (Unless this is me going "they only know one or two feldspars... and quartz of course.")
The first best thing you can do for a Windows computer is install Linux Mint. But some of us do need a few pesky Windows-specific programs. Bleh. Still, if you're up for a project, you can have both (and it's awesome). Here's an article about setting up a dual boot Windows/Mint system.
