They don’t care if your state doesn’t think you’re female. So long as you are and have been for an academically significant period of time, that’s enough.

I believe in you! Even if you don’t get this one, it’s good practice for next year. They’ll be back, with even more opportunities. Trust me. I know them. They’ve got a mission and they’re gonna stick to it. Just do it.

I guess when my friend was showing his work to some white woman and she said it was better than she expected. I feel like some folks think black art falls into this sort of typecast that is always about being black. it's annoying.

I wonder: What did she expect?

I’ve definitely had reactions of that low expectation.Even just a simple sales job at an art store elicited an “Oh wow! You work here? It’s so nice you have a job to support yourself!” or “You’re such a good helper!” I wasn’t a teenager. I was 25 years old and grown people were talking to me like this.

I haven’t gotten it yet but I brace myself for that first time someone asks why majority of my characters in a story are black. Funny thing is, all these quirky indie dramas with quirky music are never seen or billed as white movies. You point that out though and folks get all antsy like “White? How is it white if no one mentions the word ‘white?”

I was in an interview at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA) for a gift shop cashier position. I previously did caricatures and was responsible with money and cash registers so I presumed I would have the job. Easy.

The interview ends up being a joint interview. A white (maybe Latino?) manager and his assistant manager, a white woman. Their positions might be switched or even wrong here but anyway…

So the interviews going pretty good, really good back-and-forth, some laughs. They ask me about my experience with caricatures and we commonly used the term “hustle” to refer to interacting with strangers to get them to our stands to draw them and sell to them. So I used the word “hustle” and right as I say it, both of their eyes get wide and the expressions drop. One of them goes “Hustle?” in a tone like “Excuse me? Repeat that?” At that moment I was a little black hustler. I explained it but the mood never recovered. I felt awful. I finished the interview and not surprisingly didn’t get the job.

This is what black people talk about when they mention racist stuff happening to them. They go about their day and then they trigger someone else’s ideas of “black” and then they’re instantly that.

Spring is in the air!

This cool video was captured a couple weeks ago in Sequoia National Park’s Giant Forest. The hummingbird – called Anna’s Hummingbird – is getting nectar from a snow plant. Only found in California and a small piece of Nevada and southern Oregon, snow plants are a pretty rare sight. This Baltimore city councilman nailed the real reason behind the riots

As riots continued to engulf Baltimore Monday night, a City Council member spoke to a Fox News reporter and quickly got to the real root of why these protests are happening. Councilman Nick Mosby told Fox the issues which sparked the violence run much deeper than the death of Freddie Gray — and even stressed the most important thing to remember about the riots and the protests.

Please remember the folks who chose not to destroy a personal homes for nothing more than personal gain. Don’t allow the shit-show media to drown out the messages of peace that has been preached and practiced by so many residents of Baltimore, whom have spent their lives crafting a better community and fighting injustices.

The police and mayor have fucked and failed us all tonight but not before killing an innocent man (more than 100 men actually). You can’t shut down the busses and then have riot cops demand school students to “go home”. You can’t wait 15 days for answers to why a man in custody had a severed spine. You can’t turn youth centers into “holding cells” for kids out past curfew laws.

Tomorrow we clean our streets and convene on ways to create a more fruitful future for our kids. I hope that a few of my photos will show why I love this city.

The Women Who Powered World War 2, All In Color

We recognize them from ‘Rosie the Riveter’ recruitment posters, but the female workforce of World War II provided us with much more than colorful kitsch. More than six million women joined the workforce during the War, and by 1942, the estimated proportion of jobs deemed acceptable for women shot up from roughly 29 to 85 percent. Women rose to the occasion and carried out tasks once considered out of their “reach”, feeling that it was their duty to support their short-handed country during times of conflict. All of this, in spite of the fact that their home had done little to support or empower women in its nearly 200-year history.
