dear future nanner,

right now it’s saturday, october 22, 2016, but when this is posted, it’ll be october 22, 2018. you’re currently working away on assignments and presentations and stressing about finals that are in a week, and it’s hard to focus on the good that’s to come.

i’m proud of you for making it this far. i’m proud of you for never giving up on your dreams and getting into this highly competitive program. it’s interesting to think that you didn’t think you would ever be *here* right now -- program-wise, location-wise, life-wise. i’m proud of you for focusing on what’s important.

i hope you loved your time in grad school, and are grateful for what you have and what’s around you. i hope you have a good support system, and made new friends in the program. did you ever make it to australia? what did you end up specializing in?

you’re now on the other side of 25. i hope you are thriving in your first big girl slp job, and loving everything you do.

you can do anything. i believe it. you are strong, independent, smart, kind, and confident.

embrace the challenges and the unknown.

today i got the initial confirmation letter regarding my placements next year and it's just really crazy to me because last year at this time i wasn't sure if i was gonna make it into this program and here i am making solid plans about my future. holy moly everything is still so surreal

running last week: bundled up in 2-3 layers, slugging through snow in feels-like-almost-minus-30*c weather.

today's run: glorious plus 15*c, frolicking in shorts & dodging slush + puddles.

one year

feb 1st.

one year ago, i nervously hit submit on my application, as i waited for my references to trickle in.

11 months ago, i serendipitously decided to apply to a program in australia, on a whim. started pulling the documents together literally the week before the deadline. i then proceeded to forget about said application.

10 months ago, while waiting for a soup + donut at tim horton’s, i received a waitlist offer. i also received a rejection letter that same month.

8 months ago, i received an acceptance from australia out of the blue, while i was on the other side of the world, as i was checking the train schedule in a foreign country.

1 week later, i committed to that program, and began the process of moving down under.

7 months ago, exactly 2 weeks before i was due to leave, i received a phone call, notifying me off the waitlist and welcoming me into the program.

5 days after that, the moving plans came to an abrupt halt, and alas here we are.

today, i went to class just like it was any other day. went for a run. studied for my midterm on friday.

oh, the difference that a year makes.

january

january is always a strange, limbo-like month for me. on this day last year (& every year since 2013), i was in a deep slump, finalizing grad school applications & stressed out about the unknown. i also didn’t take my health seriously, and could barely run a minute straight without stopping.

today, however, was just another day. i went about my day without the stress and worry that consumed my life for so long. i am in my dream program. i went to class (one of which was my favourite – aphasia) with some of the greatest people. i ran 5 miles on a whim, and all i could feel on my run was an overwhelming sense of gratitude. i’m being asked to think about next year’s placements – where i want to go & what type of clients i want to work with. it’s such a surreal feeling.

We do not grow absolutely, chronologically. We grow sometimes in one dimension, and not in another; unevenly. We grow partially. We are relative. We are mature in one realm, childish in another. The past, present, and future mingle and pull us backward, forward, or fix us in the present. We are made up of layers, cells, constellations.
