This is a facebook conversation between a friend and I. We started out talking about the Chick-fil-A drama then it branched off into some strange shit. That's why is probably seems like we're talking about two different things for a little bit. I thought it was interesting though.
Ethan: What I think is funny, is that if there is a God (I'm claiming Agnostic on this because I don't fucking know) I would hope that it's the god that loves everyone for who they are, seeing as how we were created in the image of him.
May: The story is in the old testament before Jesus kind of reset the playing field for the world.. so God couldn't destroy anything anymore
Ethan: So he wouldn't give a flying fuck if you were gay or not, it's how you are as a person.
May: Interesting you should say that...one sec let me see if it's on this computer.
Ethan: Also, if we're created in his image doesn't that mean all our sins (like i've heard it said) are the sins of our father also?
May: Fuck I don't have it.
Ethan: I'm not educated really, I wasn't ever a minister, but still. In my eyes being created in the image of something means we have all of it's faults also.
May: I wrote a paper in philosophy that God is either non-benevolent nor omnipotent.
We are created in his image..
Ethan: Well yeah, because you hit the conundrum of if he could stop it, why isn't he, that means he's not benevolent.
May: And initially we were sinless creatures.. until we gained free will (Eve and the apple story)
Ethan: And if he cant stop it he's not omnipotent.
May: Free will is what gives us the ability to choose to sin or to believe or not to believe in god.
Ethan: Yeah, Adam and Eve were supposedly the first humans. That means the first ones created in his image, were programmed to fuck up.
May: Not until Satan tempted them in the garden.
Ethan: And eating the apple wouldn't have given her free will, she would to have had it all along because she was told not to eat the apple.
Ethan: If she had no free will pre-apple she wouldn't have been able to take it and eat it.
May: That kind of shows he gave us free will from the beginning.
Ethan: Even being tempted by Satan, unless he can re-program us to have free will.
May: Just to see if we'd fuck up.
Ethan: And free will comes with defiance
He would have made an imperfect creature because of those fuck ups, and because of the things everyone thinks are so horrible
Because if he didn't want us to fuck up he would have made a perfect creature who does the right shit all the time
I think I could easily be a Christian, not the hardcore intolerant ones, but you know what I mean.
May: That's pretty much what my argument was.. why would God make an imperfect being to begin with?
Ethan: But I chose to walk the path of "I don't fucking know, and I like to swear and drink and get stoned"
I can see why a perfect being would want to make an imperfect one, but that comes from a mind of an imperfect being.
A perfect being may not have the ability to think of something as imperfect and why there would be a reason for it.
So maybe then it wasn't a perfect being creating an imperfect one, but an imperfect one seeing the need for imperfection
MAY, YOU HAVE GONE TO THE STRANGE SIDE OF MY BRAIN THIS IS YOUR OWN FAULT
May: Holy shit that's deep
sense God isn't perfect.. I.E. he can't be both omnipotent AND benevolent.. he saw what he made as a necessary imperfection.
Ethan: Because with pure perfection there'd be no point, there's no development because it's already perfect.
