Not sure how it works but the early UK release windows are generally always extended to Ireland......and I'll take it....because .....Spider Man tickets secured for Wednesday 29th July.

Expectation: it was very high. We all have our favourite Speilberg so yeah I was excited.
Then the reviews kind of threw me because there was alot of lauding Speilberg but not so much about the movie and something bugged me about it all.
So I went in a bit cynical
Verdict: 2.5/5 (so many spoilers)
Probably bothered me more because its Speilberg.
It is getting to the point where the povs of some of these legendary directors are just not relateable any more. Speilberg knows who he is and I think is taking for granted the audience will always just go with him. Similar thing happening with Scorsese and Ridley Scott.....and its bugging the hell out of me
Would this have gotten so much positivity around it if it wasnt Speilberg....I don't think so.
Ok lets start with the good:
set pieces are awesome as always. the edge of your seat stuff with the humour is his signature...
the train scene and the whole invisible scene were highlights
oh and the car crashing into the house was very cool
and theres this scene with Josh O Connor where he is going along a fence and the shot is going right around him and its great
reminded me of this flawless shot in the bourne legacy in the house....if you know, you know
Josh O'Connor is always great and his scenes with Emily Blunt were the highlights
Because Emily Blunt was the only other person acting in this movie
Colman Domingo has a great voice but he is kind of being type cast as the wise mentor guy and please don't let it happen because he is so good in the four seasons
Colin Firth.....i am not fully convinced he had any clue what he was supposed to be doing or what the whole thing was about.
O Connor really did his best but when I say his scenes with Blunt stood out, it was more obvious because his scenes with Eve Hewson were so bad. And I have yet to see her in something where she stands out but this was just bad....she had no chemistry with O Connor at all.
she was the most interesting when she was possessed. by colin firth i guess? except she played it like she was the terminator
the movie lost me for the first time when O Connor is explaining it to Eve and i really hate when dialogue just skirts around everything to build suspense.....aliens are real....thats it....jesus
but then she says....we cant tell people because....god? wtf?????? oh and god and religion or something is what brings peace...WHAT THE FUCK????? Lets not tell people because they dont have the capacity to accept it? I wanted to SCREAM!!!!!!!
thankfully it didnt get too much more into that...well the nun on the phone thing and that woman who blessed herself when she saw Emily.....is Speilberg going through something?
Anyway....empathy empathy empathy...blah blah blah...except ever notice the onus is still on the people who are not diabolical to have empathy and to listen or whatever.....well im over it.
no....im not going to empathise with people who are evil and have "lost" their way....the damage is too great so id rather colin firth got dragged away and arrested instead of having a knowing reassuring look with domingo.....over it
and thats before we even get to the urgency to broadcast this On. A. News. Channel. instead of uploading it to the internet and assuming people would just stop to watch it and more importantly....accept it.....
a more interesting film would have been having the disclosure at the start and then seeing all the chaos unfold. but i don't think Speilberg really wants to go there
this film would have ate in the 90s.....back when we had muliple disaster movies make us believe that a global event would "bring the world together" and the news is where people got their information
but its like making a movie today about a pandemic where theres a vaccine and the ending is that everyone takes it. that wouldnt work today because we know how it is
But i don't think Speilberg does. genuinely....he is wealthy and privileged enough to just not go there.
oh and what was the world war 3 stuff? like...world on the brink of war....so Monday? but he seemed to say it was North Korea? and the Russians? definitely not America....it was hard to follow those news clips....i don't think they really thought that through.....yeah he came up with this story in the 90s and thought giving everyone phones in the end would be enough to make it current. like the agents all in black were barely a threat!
i dont always want to be cynical....i will suspend belief every step of the way but there were parts of this that insulted the intelligence of its audience and i expect more
