Also, I just wanted to toss out a disclaimer and say that most of my posts are from a personal experience perspective, this blog is honestly just a loose outlet for all my unpolished thoughts so occasionally my own introspection and projection junk will slip in there

Oh, how often I think of Min-Gi Park. Somebody should tell that guy that fear doesn't have to be all he is. Someone should let him know that he's allowed to have the things that he wants. Somebody should install a daily notification on his watch that reminds him to unclench his jaw.

does anyone have baby (or just little kid) headcanons. i was thinking about how tulip and ryan probably failed to thrive as babies

#One of my favorite baby hcs is that Ryan was a baby who could run before he even learned to walk properly #He'd just accelerate and slam onto the floor. I also headcanon he lost a tooth like this in elementary #I also headcanon that Ryan was that kid who would keep faceplanting into the floor and getting up again like it was nothing #And in a way I think all Akagis are like that. They're less of the cooing coddling type and more of the “walk it off” type #Also considering how they play fight I think the Akagis are used to the rough & tumble. Maybe less so for the second sister though #Ryan had a severe teething phase! and Min was a velcro baby who would cry if he was without his mom for the first few years #I agree that Min learned to speak slower! And his babbles were quite soft... he was considered a timid baby but he cried so loud #Baby Min was fawned over by the neighbors and his relatives because he was so squishy and round. He carried the baby fat into childhood #I wholeheartedly believe that Min was the cutest baby ever. And they dressed him in full outfits and took lots of pictures of him (framed)#I think baby Ryan was pretty cute too but every picture of him is unflattering because he's always doing Some Bullshit (finger up his nose)#Min and Ryan would hug a lot as babies and their parents found it very cute. Sometimes baby Ryan would bite baby Min and he'd start crying #My general HC for Simon is that he was a timid sensitive and imaginative type who used fiction as escapism for an unfulfilling home life #And his reliance but also quick distrust in mother figures like the Cat or even Tuba maybe suggests turbulence with his own mother #or maybe even a lack of one. I was also intrigued by his funeral comment in that one episode #Grace was handed off to nannies early on and she learned a variety of things from each one of them. I actually think she develops quite fas #But her parents wouldn't notice. She'd be a kid who learned lots of things and spoke well for her age but she wouldn't be recognized for it #She develops a little superiority complex over being a fast learner to cover up her loneliness and to get the praise she lacked elsewhere #Back to Ryan and Min... I think Mrs Park would sing lullabies solely in Korean and Min still knows them to this day. Maybe hums them in bed #And when Ryan stayed over I think he'd manage to pick up bits and pieces of it too! Just like how Min knows a few Japanese words #I think the Akagis speak mostly English but their parents would use Japanese words to refer to things every once in a while.#The Parks put a lot of effort into teaching baby Min basic Korean. Min can speak read and write Korean though not as fluent as them #Also Tulip was rather fragile as a child which is why her parents were relieved that she grew into a stronger athletic tween #Baby Lake thought baby Tulip was a sickly loser and instead wanted to do fun stuff like eating dirt #Baby Jesse loved nursery rhymes! A lot of his babble was discordant singsong #It's quite early so my brain isn't working haha but this is so fun to think about #infinity train headcanons #rb

I'm of the belief that Min isn't so physically apt (at least not any more than necessary), but I do also think that Min is capable of some surprising feats under pressure.

For example, I don't think he'd be a very good runner under normal circumstances, but if something really important were at stake he'd suddenly hit the gas under the sheer power of stress and adrenaline. And then the fatigue and meltdowns would definitely crash into him like a freight train after, but, still.

#I've always personally thought this.. maybe because I like to indulge myself on an unrealistically competent in certain areas Min-Gi haha #I do think Min would be the type who runs out of breath easily. Not so in shape. Which clashes with this particular headcanon but I digress #Tonight's train of thought is sponsored by Sekai's Book 4 rewatch stream where he's in awe of how fast Min-Gi is #Sekai's words verbatim: “Min is so fast! He watches Ryan run all that way.. sees him on the cliff and just flashes on over!”#I found it quite funny #Honestly there's a chance that Min just figured out a more efficient route with the portals but I think he'd still have to run it some way #Also this headcanon just feels somewhat in line with Min as a whole to me? Is that odd to say #He's stagnant and hard to move which translates in my head as him being less deft for the most part #But he's capable of making that move himself when the situation is truly dire for him. Like finally escaping from the Docent or saving Ryan #And it's interesting to me how Min saves Ryan twice! (or thrice?) In both instances he literally hauls Ryan (and pries the mattress off)#I should make a separate post about this but I love that Min displays quite a deal of progress and thinking on his feet while Ryan stagnate #During the last three episodes or so of the season he really solidifies. He's very active!#I digress again! The point is Min may be impervious to a push so sometimes the universe really does have to shove him to get off his ass #A great big shove. An adrenaline-filled stress inducing shove. Consequence of immediate death shove.#And Min just HAS to pull through every time. It's deeply traumatizing but it gets him moving. I suppose that's all the train cares about #I wonder. His home life was so routine and comfortable and planned out that he barely had the need to hypothetically be on his feet #But when he's finally put into circumstances where he NEEDS to act NOW and his doubts are overridden by adrenaline.. He's able? He's quick!#This may be me projecting but the few seconds it takes for doubt to take root in one's head can truly ruin anything #Sometimes it's the thinking that stops you. Sometimes it's the thinking that makes things hard. It's like that for me anyway. Paralyzing.#Sometimes the way to do it is literally to just GO! MOVE! NOW NOW NOW! Leave no room for doubt to paralyze you #And I don't know. It comforts me to think that when push comes to shove Min has it in him to make those leaps and bounds #Both physically and metaphorically. He would definitely crash afterwards though it'd take some time to get used to #Um.. it's midnight where I am currently and I don't know if all my thoughts are on their best behavior. hii i saw you mention that sekai talked a bit about ryan’s imposter syndrome, and i was just wondering if you know where he said that? i’m really interested now lol

Sekai mentions it in his Q&A stream with Johnny (timestamp 1:24:00)! It was a question regarding which aspects of Min and Ryan they related to, and Sekai says that he empathizes with Ryan's feeling of imposter syndrome especially in the Mega Maze Car. It was honestly very brief, though.

#Specifically regarding the fear that he wasn't doing well enough and his refusal to slow down and process things to avoid that feeling #He doesn't expand on it too much but I find it interesting nothenless #I mean of course it checks out #Thankful to the posts bringing up the stream again because I truly do get so much mileage out of it haha #inbox

#(I vote Tulip)#Because it's funny I think Tulip would have those very thick lenses that make her look like a bug almost #But Ryan's frames are so thick and for what? For style probably. I love how infinity train uses glasses, and that Ryan is the one who wears glasses in book four.

Like there's the basic stereotype of smart character who wears glasses, and studious people having glasses almost as an accessory. At least when used in character design.

There must be a reason the character has glasses. Whether for plot, a motive, or to help us grasp who they are based on stereotypes.

And Tulip! Fits those stereotypes! Her frames or thin and large- and neither of her parents need glasses, so I think it's safe to say it's used mostly for the stereotype and also to give her parents something to fight over.

(I don't find anything wrong with leaning into this stereotype here because it does work- and it's not necessarily negative. But it's possible that's just because I felt very seen when I watched Tulip's parents argue about glasses during the flashback scene.)

And in book four- Min suits the stereotypes of glasses-characters. He's studious, down to earth, smart- giving him glasses would have made sense to express those key associations. But they didn't! They took the time to turn the trope on it's head, to give the silly-goofy character glasses!

And Ryan's glasses do still say something about him! They're bulky and brightly colored! It's something for him to fidget with, and his glasses never once feel out of place on his character!

I dunno where I was going with it but, I just really appreciate the thought they put into these character designs, and knowing when and where to use character design tropes and when to break them.

#I make this joke all the time. Shoutout to Ryan Akagi for breaking the stereotype that glasses wearers are smart #Kidding! Ryan is smart! He's smart in a different more tactile way!#Just for the joke #And yes goodness Ryan's thick red aviator glasses are so iconic to him. I love the choice of giving Ryan glasses with such personality #I love that it's him who gets the glasses! and he chooses to wield them as an accessory rather than limit them to a tool he just uses to se #He just fully embraces his glasses in every one of his performance outfits. Or perhaps he didn't have a choice especially on the road #But if that's the case I like to imagine that he styles his outfits around his red glasses haha. That's why they're so color cohesive #Consistently red. Because if he needs his glasses to see and needs to perform with them... well the outfits at least gotta match right?#He probably just likes the color red since he clearly has a different pair as a middle schooler yet still choose red new ones #But still! I love thinking about Ryan Akagi's glasses. I wonder how high his grade is #It'd be funny to me if he was nearly bat-blind without his glasses. early book 4 fanbase felt like this quite often. too often. some disjointed examples off the top of my head that i am still stewing about five years after the fact:

So glad to be back on Tumblr and see your posts again OP because I threw my hands up reading this several times. Yeah.

I'm tickled that you mention the subtle racism of fandom culture when it comes to Asian/POC men. I don't want to come off as unjust, but I always worried that the fandom negativity and tendency to sideline Min-Gi was in some part due to how overtly Asian he was? And not to say that everyone who didn't favor him was racist, or whatever, hopefully that's a given. But between the two of them, Min-Gi has the most prominently Asian features and a storyline most heavily influenced by his heritage. His behavior (a significant target of fandom vitriol) is also largely a product of the struggles that come with his Asian-American circumstances and the fear he inherited from his Asian parents. There's also the factor of Min maybe not being as easily favorable to the wider fandom because of how he looked? Or rather, his character design wasn't considered as appealing as Ryan's (which of course is personal preference, but also has the tendency to circle back to his distinct facial features, his nose and face shape). I mean, I might just be pushing it here, but I remember people refusing to draw or include Min for these reasons. There are a lot of reasons to be less fond of a character, of course, I just felt kind of a weird vibe at times...

Overall, I understand that the majority of the fandom (especially during Book 4's debut) were young and maybe not even conscious of how they were interacting with these aspects of the characters. But I'm just really glad to see more nuanced discussions around it now. It did hurt to see many early takes of Book 4 be so cruel and dismissive of Min-Gi when I personally felt that his arc was almost the heart of the story. Sometimes I still see vestiges of Min hate around certain platforms (inflicting insane psychic damage) so unfortunately we're not out of the woods entirely, but it's good to be more aware. #StopMinHate

#I'm not saying that Min is excusably an asshole because he's Asian by the way (LOL)#Like the point was that his behavior was harmful to both him and Ryan but you need to understand where he's coming from is all #There's more I'm missing but for now this is all I got.
