nobody is irrelevant. nobody is invisible. your neighbors know your name and see you set off to school or work or the backyard everyday, sometimes with a spring in your step and sometimes with hunched over shoulders. there was this one time some stranger pointed you out to their friends and said “that’s the haircut I want” or “I have that shirt, too” or “they go to my school”. someone has admired the way you carry yourself or gave a presentation or even the way you’re so polite when you first meet a person. you’ve made comments or jokes that have stuck in minds of overhearers and eavesdroppers. when old classmates of yours think back to kindergarten or fourth grade or sophomore year they remember you and have an opinion of you. you’ve made recommendations of songs and restaurants and even cookie brands and actually introduced people to their all-time favorites. the cashier at the grocery store knows exactly what laundry detergent your household uses, or even if you don’t do your laundry at all.

you can never be irrelevant. there’s pieces of you everywhere, in a dozen lives, in a hundred dreams, in a million memories. maybe it’s true that you don’t have any friends, and you have a sucky relationship with your family or no family at all and no-one ever checks up on you, and you’re really very lonely, but that doesn’t determine your worth. you do. and so do the billions of small attributions you’ve already made to the world, both long-term and short-term. so thank you.

when i was in high school the auto class, the woodworking class, the metalworking class, the home ec class, the agriculture class etc. were all during band, art, and choir etc. …

basically if you were in band you couldn’t be in choir/art/metalworking/woodworking/home ec/etc.

which was fucking bullshit because I would have loved access to those classes.

and this was when my school actually offered such great opportunities to learn!!!

the way many schools are structured they either force kids to choose between various arts and technical skills or not offer them at all and it can hurt all of us in the long run… and you know why it was?

they refused to pay some of those teachers to run their classes all day. eventually these classes just get cut and how fucking sad is that???

because so few people today know how to say: sew and cook properly or work on cars or metalwork or garden etc.

these classes are great opportunities that everyone should have access to especially if the school already took the step and allowed it.

it’s bullshit tbh … like i’m so thankful and glad i can play musical instruments, and read sheet music. i’m not denying that’s an amazing skill but… like … there came a point in HS where the only electives I could take were fucking useless because the good ones were just during band.

so I ended up taking like… current events where we sat and did nothing instead of woodshop where i could have learned another valuable skill.

AND THEN!!! The worst part is!!! when people aren’t taking these classes because say, in my case, we’ve been in band since middle school and that’s where all our friends are, the school will justify cutting something important like metal shop because the attendance wasn’t high enough

they sow the seeds of the destruction of these classes and I can’t help but feel like it’s intentional sabotage of our education system.

A Virgo once told me I can be as sad as I want just make sure I’m still doing things and that has changed the way I view everything. I’m like it’s fine that I’m sad right now but let me go be sad at hot yoga and be sad while I’m taking my vitamins and be sad while I’m learning ceramics and while I’m completing my tasks. This might sound like depressing but for me it’s so elevating.
