"a-are you ready, [nickname]?" eisha's voice quivers as she readies Type: Heal in her shakey hands.
she looks even more sick compared to the comatose rudo that lies in the bed before you two. the boy looks beyond rough, unsaveable by normal medicine; skin splotched with red, purple and black, breath coming out in hoarse shudders and scars you're sure are deeper than what the eye can perceive. even his resting face is one of pain, furrowed eyebrows and tightly shut eyes giving away just how fractured his body is.
eisha trembles before your shared patient, her face pale and eyes wide with endless possibilities of failure. your hand finds her shoulder, causing you two to exchange a look of reassurance that only true friendship can bring.
"easy eish'...", you smile softly, squeezing it before you steady orphica in your hands, "we'll start on four."
"r-right, like always." she breathes out, matching your expression best she can.
as if they were magnets, your fingers find and form a g-chord. you and eisha share one last look and nod. then, you both fully focused now on healing rudo.
"1", you inhale and close your eyes—
"2", —the darkness slows the tense moment, like a baby's shrill cry being quelled by a gentle hush—
"3"—you feel your nerves melt, your pulse steady, and your soul settle—
"4." —your eyes shoot open as adrenaline suddenly rushes through your body.
eisha's right there alongside you, in sync with your movement. both of her hands is on rudo's chest . you and eisha's magic reach an unshakeable equilibrium as it takes the form of duo-colored anima surging throughout the room.
from outside, the act looks like a light show and immediately grabs the attention of amo empool, the newest cleaner and healer to hq. she rushes in with arms full of artificial flowers and sweets for her friend rudo, the disappointment of her nearly missing the spectacle washed immediately away with pure amazement.
her eyes reflect the glow that encases rudo's body. a melody that promises a tomorrow streams throughout the room as electricity snaps, crackles and pops in tune with it; a hit song in the making.
just as quick as it starts is as quick as it stops, the crescendo decending into a sweet lullaby, then silence.
you and eisha let out a breath you didn't even know you both were holding. and then, so does rudo.
you both snap your heads to the boy's face and are met with ruby red eyes fluttering open.
"ohmygoshwedidit..." eisha squeaks under her breath, beyond relieved this all worked out.
"rudo..." you sigh happily.
"wow..." a quiet voice whispers in amazement.
you turn to the source, and it's none other than amo!
"amo! come in!" you usher, "we healed your friend back to full health!"
"amo is...amazed...that was beautiful..." she comes in close, looking over rudo's now clean body.
"amo?" rudo looks up at the orange haired girl.
she smiles brightly when he meets his gaze and places the artificial flowers and sweets gently on his lap, "for you!"
"awww! isn't that sweet ?" you chime in.
"r-really?!? amo just thought it'd be a kind gesture for her friend...she'd do it for any friend..." she coyly explains, twiddling with her hair to hide her rosy cheeks.
you giggle at her sudden shyness, now turning your attention to your back to eisha, "you did amazing as always eish'! you all good here?"
"mhm! th-thank you [nickname]! i-it's really you who does all of the work..." eisha toys with her fingers upon being put in the sudden spotlight—
"whaaatt?! girl no!! this was all you!! i can only heal but so much, it's you that does the heavy lifting!" —and your words only pour more spotlight onto her—
—and amo watches this moment like it's the most engaging lesson on love ever.
amo has always noticed your kindness. you're so gracious with your words and actions; always applauding those who need the boost in their confidence, uplifting bad moods and cloudy days with smiles and jokes, making pain and problems seem lightyears away even when someone was on the brink of death.
your energy is infectious and for someone who was shrouded in despair all of her life, amo uses that positivity as her guiding star. she's never had a bad moment with you and as she trains to become a healer, she tries to reflect your energy right back,
"amo agrees ! everyone is very lucky to have you [name]!"
now it's your turn to get flustered—you flush and swat your hand at the compliment—"awww shucks ! i just like making sure everyone's good to see another day, typical healer things !"
"but [name]'s work isn't typical ! it's beautiful ! the way she turns her songs into medicine is amazing !" the orange hair girl begins gushing with eisha nodding in agreement.
"oh please ! i'm no where nea—"
"no !" amo cut you off passionately, her words matching her stance full of flare "—your work is beyond beauty and deserves so much praise ! you save lives and make them happier and better !! amo wants to learn to be that powerful, that positive, that everything !!!"
you can't help but giggle at her dramatics, causing amo to go back to being flustered, feeling a little uncool after such a big showing of her feelings.
"it all comes with patience and experience 'mo, you'll get there !" you reassure her.
your hands begin to drift to your orphica's case, ready to exit, but your reach is stopped by a pair of softer, colder pair of hands,
"can you teach me how to make the world happier, too?" then your gaze is met with round orange eyes full of plea.
your face softens and your interlock fingers with amo,
"well, i could teach you piano !"
"yes! that will definitely do !"
"f# is the black key and it comes at the end. then that's your finished scale."
"if you're able to play a scale, you can do practically anything !"
"do you want me to walk you through it?"
taking amo under your wing as a musician was exciting ! her eager mindset made her a great student and you a motivated teacher ! you decided to take a more "professional" approach when it came to teaching her, beginning with the basics and building from there.
teaching her the g-major scale, the core of all things music, was one of the easiest things to teach. it's pattern is recognizable, you could sing along to it, and it taught the basics forms of playing piano.
despite her eagerness to learn, she was nervous. not only was it that general humans wanted to immediately excel but she really didn't wanna mess up, especially in front of her crush !
she also couldn't shake the feeling of needing to pay you back. you're going out of your way to teach her piano—something so complicated and delicate—on top of your busy schedule as a healer. you're doing so much for her, you deserve something back !
her nerves freeze when your warm hands guide her cold ones to the keys. she then notices your hands. they're warm, but also a bit rough at the finger pads—maybe amo can buy you a lotion to help with that!—and your nail polish is chipped—maybe you two can paint your nails together. something.
something that silences the guilt of deserving good things.
"are you ready?" you save her from her near spiral. she refocuses to being taught piano, a much simpler thing to put her mind on.
slowly but, you guide her hands to the keys she's supposed to press. g, a, b, c, d, e—all white—and f sharp—the last black key.
she took this pattern in carefully, committing it to memory best she could.
"and just like that, you can play the g major scale! there is I'm pretty sure a minor scale but to be honest I know songs better than I do music theory..." you ramble off,
but amo doesn't catch your awkwardness, she is enthralled by the tune and how she was able to do that (even though it was you moving her hands).
it's enough to make her tear up and smile, as bright as the sun can be. she looks up at you, eyes crinkled up like candy wrappers, trying not to cry,
and in turn, this makes you tear up. seeing someone so emotional over music—the art you create to save people's lives—was a phenomena of feelings you thought you would only experience in this life time. sharing that love with someone, especially the girl you love, lights up your soul far beyond what words can encompass.
music was there for you when the rest of the word wasn't. it made the sun rise for even your darkest, cloudiest days, and bedazzled the runway for the best days you had. when no one would listen to you, the notes you played on orphica did, and in turn you listened to them back. you created lilt after harmony after tune after melody if it meant you had a voice, one powerful enough to reach the depths of people's souls, hearts and minds.
and amo sees that. all and more.
in fact she smells it. you reek of melody. the airy doo-da's you hum in the morning smell like freshly pruned lilies. the sugar high, crazed karaoke songs you belt with friends smell like sherbet and fruit punch. the hushed fragments of songs leaking with tears smell like rainwater; all beautiful, meaningful, loving, good things.
"can we do that again, [name] ?"
"sniff—of course ! let's work until you master it !"
"amo can do that in no time !"
"let's practice again!" "alrighty!"
"[nameee]?" "yes 'momo?" "do you have a mission todaaay?" "noooo" "can we practice theeeennn?" "yeeesss!"
"excuse me, mr. corvus. miss amo, do you want to practice piano today ?" "oh yes miss [name] tehe! excuse us uncle corvus!"
"you, me, practice, now!" "me, you, let's, go!"
common sentences of what the days that rolled around sounded like. every chance you two would get you would practice piano.
it felt so easy to play for amo when you were around. the comfort, the words of encouragement, the guidance...
however, the string instrument itself is not so simple. even though all she's learning now are just scales, there's so many of them. and they can be remixed and warped in all kinds of ways; backwards, faster, slower, the possibilities are overwhelming.
that is not to say she's not on a good track, amo has in fact aced the g-scale! but she wants to go above and beyond, impress you and prove herself. she doesn't want to rely on you all the time, she wants to impress you.
plus, what if she's annoying you...using you for just being her teacher...you're her friend, she knows you're her friend, friends hell each other. but still there's that guilt. she should give you something back, at least a show. maybe.
she's going to try the c-scale now, alone. (it's what the book in uncle corvus's office told her to do at least.)
but the c-scale looks hard. much harder than the g-scale at least.
well actually, it can't be that hard ! it's just the g scale but different ! instead, the notes are c, d, e, f, g, a, and b, no sharps so they're all white keys. that's fine, just have to remember which white keys they are and—oof—that sounds too low...was the g key always that low? nevermind that, that sounded basically right, right?
let's try it again ! oh no... that definitely wasn't it...did she accidentally revert into playing the g-scale midway through ? just look at the book !
okay wait ! maybe if she puts her foot on this pedal instead—umm...no no, that's not right...
oh my gosh then what if you see her like this? struggling to play a scale as if she didn't just play one ? that's not a cute look on her, and she was listening to you when you taught her so she should know ! she definitely does not want to disappoint you especially because she's come this far—
amo slams her hands onto all the keys her palms can reach, defeated and frustrated. it feels like she just wasted her whole day trying to learn a damn scale.
this prompts you, who has been in the doorway watching her learn (and struggle), to speak up;
"realax mo' it's all apart—"
"DON'T SCREAM AT ME [NAME]!!!"
"YOU SCARED ME BY SCREAMING AT ME!"
"UGH!" amo gets up and snatches the piano guide from the piano's stand, firmly closing the book. "this is so hard !"
"we can practice together then, it's okay that you still need my help." you try to comfort her.
"but I want to get better! and I can do it by myself! amo is not dumb!"
"you can! and you're not! it's not about you being smart momo—."
"but it does ! amo's been paying attention and doing her best ! amo just feels stupid because she can't do it right even though she's been listening and watching and she feels kind of ashamed and—AGHH! WHATEVER! I NEED A MOMENT!"
she storms down the hall to her room, and you call out behind her, "don't be ashamed of help!"
it's cinematic the way this argument happens. it's actually pretty cringe.
it certainly makes amo cringe.
she's curled up in her room, playing with her hair, thinking about how stupid she feels. how stupid it all it is. she got mad at you for what? trying to help her out?
she was frustrated—sure—but, she knows better. she's been learning how to be better. you were just trying to help. but also gosh she's so angry at...herself.
yea, she feels stupid because she blew it all up.
don't worry, you also feel equally stupid. trying to calm her down when you know you're not good at comforting others and when she made it obvious she just needed a break?
also, who the fuck uses nicknames in times of stress? nice going dipshit, way to make her feel like a kid!
yes you had good intentions but, this all feels so stupid. a bubble up of frustration if anything. it's not that deep.
the cringe that rides both of your goosebumps elevates you both off your beds and to the music room. of course—again, cinematically—as you both walk to the room you notice a head of black and orange and she notices the reflective silver of your jewelry and belt buckle. you both get shy but approach the room in tandem, eyes dating everywhere but the path ahead.
when you two meet, both of your faces are flushed; amo's cheeks dusted a rosey red and your face warmer than a sauna.
your eyes meet, causing amo's head to dip and your hand to find and rub the back of your neck.
"amo is really sorry she was being mean to you. it's so cringe but i think i was just mad about not being able to impress you and that's no way to treat amo's favorite person—"
"no it's okay ! i was being shitty! like i was trying to calm you down and be cool but i obviously i should've let you work it out and you're my favorite person too so—"
"WHAT?! REALLY?!?" amo beams at your statement, your declaration !
"YES REALLY! i wouldn't practice with anyone else! i wouldn't devote my time to anyone else ! you're amazing amo!"
"you're amazing too [name] ! i-i really look up to you as a healer and as a person and amo thinks you're really pretty and it makes her a little nervous because you're so cool and like i dunno i guess i just want to be like you even though I'm fine just being friends and umm—" amo realizes how much she's been rambling and hides her face in her hair.
you are even more flustered than you before, rendered speechless by her sweet words and borderline confession? you weren't the embarrassed kind of flustered, no, you were the flattered kind, the "did my crush just reciprocate my feelings" kind. the "oh my gosh Iim realizing just how bad my crush is" kind.
we barely touched on it but, you have a crush on amo. and though it only bloomed in recent times, it sprouted when you first saw her.
when you heard from ms. semiu that you and eisha were going to gain a new healer to the team, you both were excited ! you could always use another pair of hands and the world needs more hugs, kisses and love anyways, and that's something you feel only a healer is best at !
then, upon being told she'd be shadowing you on the battlefield as a healer in training by mr. corvus, you were even more thrilled to work with her ! it would be great to tag team fallen friends so the job is quicker and it was only a matter of time before you had a new friend !
finally, upon meeting her face to face, you were floored.
enthralled with her beauty, amo was gorgeous. bright orange eyes round like fresh clementines, silky hair falling gently and framing her face like a piece of art, a beautiful frilly uniform complete with bows and ruffles that complimented her softness. her hands were like feathers, a little fidgety but elegant none the less. her boots were far too huge for her ,but, she wore them with so much confidence that they fit her aesthetic.
you couldn't help but also notice her voice—gosh the musician in you was loud and proud—gentle and a little meek like a cat, perfect for singing. if you wanted to get technical, she would probably be a soprano. before saying "hi" when you passed each other in the halls, you'd catch her humming tunes of childhood, hitting every note like she had them recorded. when she spoke about something she loved, she didn't shy away from being expressive. her tone shifted and spun in a matter of seconds, making her such an engaging storyteller.
you'd never met anyone else like her. she was uniquely herself, drawing you in more than any rumors and information could do.
you did worry about becoming friends with her though. you didn't wanna upset anyone as a baseline rule but, you heard amo had a hard time with people. being trapped in a tower all their life would do that to someone after all.
nervous to mess up, you were slow with amo. not in a patronizing way—she wasn't a baby—in a way akin to leaving a stray animal some food and getting closer to pet it everyday, eventually weaving your way to gaining it's trust.
one of these core moments is when you had to administer vaccines to her (company policy).
at this point, you and amo were not quite friends definitely friendly. you had conversations about common likes and dislikes, needles being an example. you told her how much you did not enjoy handling them, especially when you had to vaccinate people. to having to calm people down to sometimes dealing with the after effects, it was not fun.
amo agreed! she had a fear of needles and strong dislike of anything sharp. she revealed a bit of her past and why. she expressed she wanted to face that fear, to which you couldn't help but hug her and let her know you'd be there every step of the way.
with this conversation fresh in your head, when it came time to give her her shots, you felt like shit.
amo was more than relieved that it was you giving her vaccines but still, neither of you were thrilled. you wanted this to be simple and quick so, you pretended this way any other hangout and just talked to her. she did the same; opened up about more of her favorite thing, romance, which also happened to be your favorite genre of movie. you then gushed about all these movies you've seen and how the next time you have time off you two should watch them together, distracting her from the pain she otherwise would have felt and you would have had to face. even when you were done treating her, you two kept talking, holding this genuine interest for each others likes and commentary.
it was the first time amo felt heard and understood, not used. and it was the first time you felt like you didn't scare someone off. it was so rewarding, especially because at that point, you had a great friend, and definetly a crush.
so now as you sit in the present, face to face with the girl of your dreams, you can't help but smile really wide and giggle, overwhelmed with the honest feeling of joy and giddiness.
amo only gives the energy back in tenfold, lacing her fingers with yours and bouncing as she leads you into the piano room.
you both sit down on the bench together and amo looks at you, sincerity written all over her face;
"can i show you the scale again ? "
and so it begins, another lesson. with this time a weird mix of emotional banter, which only makes for the best kind of music.
