Things to know about credit
I learned a few things at an informational session on Credit last week. As I was typing my notes, I thought you all might find them useful, so see below for my notes on credit!
-----------------
Credit types and ratio:
⢠1-2 Installments - home loan / student debt
⢠3 Revolving - credit cards
⢠Old lines of credit - shows good history
Your CreditKarma Credit Score is not accurate. Financial institutions use a FICO Score and creditkarma does not.
⢠Credit karma is still useful because their report is still right. This report info makes up your credit score.
FICO Score is based on:
⢠35% past payment history - on time or not
⢠30% outstanding debt - spending more than have coming in
⢠15% how long you've had debt
⢠10% new applications for credit
Building Credit:
⢠Consistency and paying on time build credit
⢠Check your credit score consistently to check for errors
⢠You can decline a higher line of credit because it makes your outstanding debt limit high
Debt to Income ratio: Fixed expense debts (minimum payments on cards & loans) divided by monthly gross income
Credit Report Copies www.annualcreditreport.com 877-322-8228
⢠Pull 1 report from each bureau every 4 months because you get one per year
⢠No credit score, just the data
FTC - Federal Trade Commission www.ftc.gov/idtheft 877-438-4338
⢠Place a fraud alert on your credit - 90 days or 7 years
⢠FTC Federal Trade Commission - Security freeze - restricts access to your credit report - Will delay approval of requests / bank activity -Good to think about if you're not doing anything with your credit anytime soon - Preventative measure for identity theft
Credit counseling agencies are primarily scams - donât pay a third party agency to pay off your debt, work directly with the institution.
I hope this helps someone as much as it did me!
