DUCK AND RUN 28.08.2022 // OPEN
So this is what it felt like when time was against you. People on the streets passed by too slowly, and the sun set far too quickly. As soon as you felt warm, the moon was overhead, and the clock was reminding you that this silver hour, a sliver after midnight, was no longer a sign of longevity but a marker of another day dead.
Maybe he was being dramatic, but Jarrett doubted it. As much as he wanted to get on with the rest of his life, he knew that this was the last summer in which he could simply enjoy life. He had no obligations (save the supplies list shoved deeply in his pocket). This was a summer of pure want, and while he had certainly made a few memories, he never wanted it to end. One morning, he decided to go to Paris. He rode a Muggle train across the Channel, hopped off, spoke broken French (and even that was kind), and fell asleep by the Seine (only to be woken up by a homeless wanderer at 3am). The day after, he took the Flu to James’ house, convinced Jonah to join, and made the marvelous decision to mingle alcohol and quaffles.
Today, he wanted to explore. He’d taken off into the heart of London, intent on dragging someone into his adventures across the capital. Stranger, friend, he didn’t really care. He wanted to be a part of the culture that had lost him his home and inheritance, and he wanted to enjoy it. He wanted to forget that he was graduating this year, that afterwards he had to put his life on course based upon need rather than desire.
The thought churned his stomach, and Jarrett made up for it by stepping up onto the bridge railing. It was a thirty foot drop to his right and a four foot step back to civilization to his left. He stepped forward, reveling in being on the cusp of something. Then he caught eye of neon yellow, a blob that was content with moseying through the crowd until someone was standing head and torso above it. Jarrett took to running along the railing, dodging columns with a light step until reaching the end of the bridge. He assimilating with the crowd, making a path of his own. Tourists cleared out of his way one by one, but there was someone with a paper in their hand and their eyes upon the cityscape. Jarrett’s shoulder clipped theirs, and without thinking, he grabbed their hand, tugging them along with him.
“C’mon, keep up!” he urged, ducking into a side alley.
This was the spirit of summer.
Muggles had always fascinated Albus. To think that his father had grown up in the muggle world with no knowledge of his powers or true heritage baffled and amazed him. He always pondered what it would have been like to discover the wizarding world and magic after growing up in a world where, most of the things that were absolutely mundane to Albus, would have been thought impossible and breathtaking.
As a child, Albus often asked his father to explain various muggle technologies to him, because back then he was extremely curious about how muggles functioned without any magic. His father must have noticed his enthusiasm and on his 12th birthday, he was given an old Polaroid camera with plenty of film. Now whenever Albus was feeling bored or adventurous, he would go out with his camera and see what sort of images he could capture. Still ones, mind you, which took a while to get used to, younger Albus often thinking his photos were broken before he remembered the point of using such a device.
As summer was reaching its end, Albus had run out of things to keep himself occupied. That’s how he found himself in the middle of London, simultaneously people (muggle) watching and taking photographs. He walked around the city, stopping whenever he saw something that peaked his interest or looked “cool” to snap a photo, remove the film, and place it in his pocket to develop.
He had been sitting on a bench near the bridge, muggle paper in hand as he waited for his photo of the view from the bridge to be ready. But his moment of peace was interrupted when someone bumped into him then pulled him up off of his feet into a forced run. “What the bloody- Jarrett? What are you doing? What are we doing?” He corrected as he realized there was no stopping and he apparently was just going to go along with this madness. He reached into his pocket whilst trying to keep up, realizing the polaroid from the bridge was long gone. He sighed, muttering to himself, “Merlin’s beard.”
“This is definitely my favorite part of going back to school” she spoke as she looked through different books in the shelf, a warm smile spread across her face. Flourish and Blotts was her favorite place in Diagon Alley, the store would always fill her with a sense of safety, one she completely adored. “Ohhh, I hadn’t seen this one before” she murmured as she picked one of the texts on top of a pile.
Albus had decided to accompany Rose to gather all of this year’s school supplies they’d need. Her company was a tad more preferable to that of his siblings when it came to school shopping, perhaps because neither of his siblings seemed to enjoy it as much as he did. “I would normally agree, but seeing all of these books and realizing I don’t have enough time to read all of them pisses me off a bit.” He picked up a copy of Advanced Potion Making, which was on his list, and added it to a pile he was forming on a nearby table. Albus smiled to himself as he looked at the book, proud of himself for placing into the NEWT potions class.
He walked over to where Rose was browsing. “Which one?” He asked curiously, taking the book from her hands. “Asiatic Anti-Venoms by Libatius Borage? Psh, I’ve read it.” He looked at the pile next to him, picking the book off the top to hold in his other hand. “Animal Ghosts of Britain. Far more entertaining. Here ya go!” He joked as he shoved the book towards her. “Now, can we move on to Madam Malkin’s? I want to get some new robes, I’m growing out of James’ hand me downs.”
