Zoey spends her childhood seeing her parents look at her with nothing but contempt and indifference, but coping by rationalizing their behavior as her parents just not being able to love children at all.

And then she sees her father lift her half-brother Freddie in the air and gaze at him with pride and almost rationalizing that as him just being excited to have a son, but then she sees him dote on her little half-sister Rosie and do things with her that he never did with Zoey.

And then she sees her mother talk sweetly and softly with her younger half-brother Davie, and maybe that’s just her being happy having a son but no, she’s the same with her half-sisters and other half-brother, too.

It’s a sick feeling, the realization that it’s HER they can’t stand to look at. That she’s the only one who they find revolving to gaze upon. And maybe it’s because she’s a manifestation of their hatred of each other, or maybe it’s because they hate her.

(Or maybe they’re just bad people, she realizes later on, when she finds Freddie wondering the streets, afraid, and Rosie escapes their father’s grasp and immediately calls her for help.

Maybe they just weren’t meant to be parents, she thinks, as she hears that Davie went low contact from Rosie, who connected with him and is helping him get out, and Harriett and Imogen go to schools in Boston and New York, and Phil actively trash talks their mother on Tiktok.)

She makes sure her children never felt like how she did. She makes sure that every ritual she did with one child is done with every other child, unless they seem uninterested, in which case she finds something new for them. She makes sure to divide her attention and affection as equally as possible.

Zoey makes sure her children know that she loves them all greatly and equally.

Currently: the wraiths are dead (mostly), and Rumi didn’t even kill Bobby in the process—many thanks to Zoey, who’s formally decided to drop out of med school and join Celine’s shamanic order. That said, Minji and Miyeong need a hospital, and Mira needs a little more than that.

Mira can feel it. The parts that are the wraith, rattling around inside her. Her wrists still hurt and something keeps telling her how easy it would be to just—take a little more.

She watches, useless, as Minji starts palpating Miyeong’s knee, because if she touched—

Footsteps break into her thoughts, and she looks. Celine is back, with Rumi. No Zoey or Bobby though.

Rumi’s eyes go wide and she bolts across the room so fast that she blurs, suddenly kneeling by Mira, taking Mira’s ugly, tainted hands in her own. “Oh… what happened?”

“I… I fucked up,” Mira says, and she finds that she’s suddenly on the edge of tears, with Rumi—fucking Rumi!—holding her so gently.

“We will make this right,” Rumi promises, looking at her with that intent stare of hers, and Mira hates her for how kind she is, in spite of—of everything. Of all of it.

“Yeah,” she says, and it comes out choked with the edge of tears. “Maybe start with Miyeong’s knee?”

Rumi drowns, confused, and spins. “Miyeong-nim! Minji-nim, can I assist you? Are you well?”

Minji does something that might’ve otherwise been a huff of laughter, but largely comes out pained. “If you can carry her out of here, that would help a hell of a lot.”

“Of course,” Rumi says, and she is so unhesitating and so guilty and Mira just—gives up. She loves her, and it’s doomed, but whatever. She does.

Celine finally finishes walking over as Rumi shuffles over to Minji and Miyeong, telling them calmly, “Zoey has taken our friend Bobby-ssi to clean his apartment. She’ll meet us at the door.”

“Is this an ambulance emergency?” Rumi asks, looking around as her hands hover nervously at Miyeong’s side. “Or are we to transport Miyeong-nim ourselves?”

Miyeong giggles, clearly going out of her mind with pain. “Sorry! Sorry, just—fuck, I’m about to cry so—gotta laugh.”

“Why would I take offense?” Rumi replies, gracious as ever.

Minji sighs. “Normally I’d call one, but in between you and Mira, I think we’d have some unpleasant questions to answer. Now, c’mon, you’re gonna have to be careful not to jostle her knee while we move, okay?”

AU where Zoey was once tall

When the girls first met, Zoey was 5 and was already a head taller than both Mira and Rumi. She'd tell them that being tall meant she was basically in charge, completely certain her height came with authority. She decided what they watched or picked what games they played. She made all the rules. No, she was the rule. Zoey loved every second of it. Rumi and Mira just let her have it. She was their maknae, after all, and spoiling her had always come naturally to them.

By the time they were teenagers, puberty hit them like a truck and somehow skipped Zoey. She spent the next few years waiting for her turn, but it never came.

Zoey: Ok how did this happened? What dark magic is this?!

Rumi: Huh? What are you talking about?

Zoey: I feel like a garden gnome next to the two of you. Back then I was basically a god. I went from Mount Olympus to lawn ornaments.

Mira: There's no dark magic, Zoey. It's just genetics.

Zoey, glaring at the sky and shaking her fist: What did I do to deserve this? This is so unfair! We bathed in the same tub as kids, slept on the same bed, trained side by side until we couldn't even stand. We ate the exact same meals—

Mira: That might actually be the point

Zoey: The point is, we did everything together, we should be growing together! The universe owed me better odds than this. I called dibs on being tall first!!!

Zoey, letting herself be dragged toward the kitchen: I hope you both know I'm only agreeing to this because I'm weak with hunger. This isn't over. The universe hasn't heard the last of me!

Mira: I'm sure it's terrified.
