Cheers to a successful summer! #iammbsyep #districtoflearning #syep2015
Our smartArt 2015 Summer Youth Employment Open House is going on. The interns are presenting their six weeks of sweat, sodium, art, enthusiasm, and effort.
The day before our open house and the last day of #SYEP the students are testing their apps. After six long weeks the students have developed four apps demonstrating different formats of the workshops they have participated in. @mbsyep @marthastable #Iammbsyep
The interns have endured six weeks of culinary practice, workshops, and a trip to an industrial kitchen. They have gathered all of their experience and created an electronic footprint, an Ecookbook. They used their #21stcenturyskills in order to trace and properly arrange all the data they acquired over the six week period. From chicken quesadilla's to whole wheat waffles the interns have created a multitude of recipes. All throughout the culinary workshops they have discussed healthy options, accessibility of produce, and healthy eating.
We are nearing the end of the DC DOES @mbsyep. This Friday, our #MBSYEP2015 interns will be showcasing the mobile and web #apps they developed as well as give persuasive speeches, demonstrate mastery of culinary skills, and showcase their visual and literary art creations. Afterwards, we will close out with @DaOriginalz who will facilitate a workshop that enables interns to produce and act out skits that show the importance of decision making, and how daily decisions affect the outcome of various situations in life through dance. @hopedealing can't think of a better way to become #WorkReady. #DCProud #RealWorldInterns #21stcenturyskills #districtoflearning (at Martha's Table)
The interns learned well. They decided to create a food familiar to them but a healthier alternative. Lo Mein! They discussed healthy food and the accessibility of these items in their neighborhoods.
@llcoolchef gives an emotional speech about #MTsmartART youth and the healthy alternative to #CarryOut they created today, Vegetable Lo Mein. He's so proud of their growth and the #21stCenturySkills they've gained as a part of his culinary workshop. #DCProud #IBeInTheKitchen #MBSYEP2015 #DistrictOfLearning #WorkReady (at Martha's Table)
Last Friday the interns took a trip to The Hamilton, an upscale restaurant in downtown D.C.. Over the course of the program the students have been learning proper cooking techniques, cooking recipes and recording information for their very own E-cookbook. They were given a tour of industrial kitchen by the executive chef Anthony Lombardo. The students are learning about healthy eating that is culturally sensitive and speaks to the issues that can inhibit people from eating healthy within their age groups and neighborhoods. Sampling foods from the restaurant allowed the students to see the disparity in the consumption and accessibility of fresh foods.
Thanks @mobomoapps for coming to speak to our interns today about app development! #Workreadiness skills have been provided to our students through our discussion today. @mbsyep

Who said you can't learn during the summer? Who knew the interns had learned so much. #workreadiness #MBYLI #IAMSYEP #districtoflearning
As the days wind down, the interns are hard at work developing their apps. Using their work readiness skills they are collaborating with each other to design the home pages and aesthetic elements of their apps. Working with concrete deadlines is an essential component to the workforce and their creativity allows them to standout against their peers.
