TEXT: FREDDIE
Pace: Bon anniversaire, mademoiselle Freddie!
.nvmtheodore:
She sounds great! I… Um, no. I do not have a sister, I think that is the appropriate answer here. Oh, that is really nice. How long have you been here for? That does sound very exciting, and like something that you would enjoy. I am sure they would love your documentary at the Sundance! Oh… You think my name is cute? No, that is not patronising. That is very nice. It is short for Theodore, but now I definitely do think that Teddy is nice than Theodore. Thank you!
The... appropriate answer? What does that mean? A few months! We meant to leave a while ago but then Cece got offered a job. I don’t mind. I miss Paris, but I like Wellington and I’ve met so many awesome people. Theodore is cool name too! I just think Teddy is cuter. Probably because it makes me think of teddy bears and they’re always cute.
.nvmtheodore:
That’s good! Having a sister must be really nice, especially if she believes in you. Oh! That is good, too. That you have nice friends that say nice things. Christian and Bea, they are your friends, yes? Oh, what is the Sundance Festival? I am very excited to see it, Pace! And my name is Teddy.
Emmeline is the best. I know you don’t have a brother now, but do you have a sister? Oui, they’re my friends. They are two of the first people I met when I got here. The Sundance Festival is a showcase for independent films. They don’t have a lot of funding but it people go there and like them then they get the funding to be distributed. Teddy, that’s a cute name! Is it bad that I said cute? Is that patronising?
.nvmtheodore:
Well, we just met but I think that your girlfriend should have more faith in you because it is nice to feel like people are proud of you, I think. Oh, really? That is a shame. It would be nice if she could become a famous actress, and you could make movies, and then you could go to… Hollywood! And be very successful. Yes, I would love to! Even if Twix wasn’t in it I would be very happy to watch it, but she could be mine and Ryke’s claim to fame.
My sister has faith in me! And Christian and Bea say nice things about my films too. I think Hollywood movies are just okay, but I would rather show mine at the Sundance Festival. Oh, that’s nice you want to watch it. You definitely can when I finish! By the way, I’m Pace. I didn’t say before.
.nvmtheodore:
Of course you can! She will like you very much. Cece, she is your girlfriend? I think she should have faith in you, I am sure you are very talented. Oh, that is the Superhero movie! That must be very exciting. So maybe you can make Twix famous because you will have a famous girlfriend! That sounds very interesting though, I would really like to watch it when you finish… If that’s alright?
Yes, Cece is my girlfriend. But I’m not that good, I promise. Oh, Cece doesn’t have a very big part. I would never say that in front of her but I don’t think that it will make her famous. But I could be wrong! You really want to watch my documentary? I mean, I’ll make sure Twix is definitely in it, so.
.nvmtheodore:
They are really fuzzy. And warm. Do you want to hold her? Oh really? That is really exciting, though! I think that Twix being in a documentary is really exciting, and you could be famous some day! What else will your documentary involve? She does, that’s true!
I can hold her? Yes! I think it’s nice you have lot of faith in my documentary making skills, because Cece says I need to stay humble and critique my work. It’s a bit of an abstract concept but I’m here for a while because my girlfriend got a small part in the Captain America movie they’re making here. So I want to record everything I see and then put it all together at the end.
.nvmtheodore:
Yes! It isn’t bad if they don’t scare her, and she does a really cute thing where she rolls onto her back… And you can stroke her tummy! You want to film her? Yes! I think she would love that. And then I can tell Ryke that his cat is famous. It would be crappy, but I’d never do that! I like her too, so I take good care of her, I promise.
Cat tummies are really fuzzy, it’s awesome. I don’t think i can make her famous but I’m putting together a small documentary thing about Wellington. She has a nice camera face, by the way.
.nvmtheodore:
Oh! I work with trains. I am a conductor, so usually she just falls asleep on one of the seats while the passengers take pictures of her! But I am a mechanic too and I worry that I will lose her, so that could be scary. Plus, I do not want to accidentally leave Twix on a train in Hamilton. Because Ryke would be sad and I would also be sad. But yes! They both are named after candy. Cute, isn’t it? But… I’m not sure. Maybe Snickers is more sensible!
That’s cute! Are you okay with people taking pictures of her? Is she? Can I film her? I think it would be pretty crappy if you lost her, especially because she seems to really like you.
.nvmtheodore:
No, no… Ryke is my friend, we live together! I do not have a brother! And no! I think Twix loves Ryke much more, but she sometimes climbs into my bag and I do not realise until after I leave the house. Sometimes he comes to work with me. But you are right, she is a very pretty cat! Yes, like the candy! He has another cat named Snickers, too. He is very handsome but has never been to work with me before.
Where do you work? Is it dangerous for cats? Or is it cat friendly and you’re worried that she’ll like it so much that she doesn’t want to come home? And then Ryke will be angry. Ah, they’re both named after candy. Why does Snickers not go to work with you?
.nvmtheodore:
He is very cute, isn’t he? I don’t think that Ryke would be very happy if she stole him, but she could definitely play with him! His name is Twix!
Is Ryke your brother? And does his cat just like you better? Or have you stolen him? He looks like a cat everyone would want to steal. Twix like... the candy, oui?
.nvmtheodore:
Yes, he has a habit of climbing into my bag… It is just as well I noticed before I left the lobby, Ryke misses him very much when he joins me at work.
Ah, he’s cute! My sister would steal him if she saw him. What do you call him?

Pace: Bon anniversaire!!! :D
.lmfaobea:
Bea blanched stupidly, standing quietly in place as she watched the pieces fit together for the Frenchman. In what seemed to be slow motion, she watched as he lifted the rim of his - fucking adorable - trademark newsboy cap so he could give her a once over. From underneath the cap peered out a set of shy brown eyes, and strands of those chocolate brown curls Bea couldn’t help but admire kept threatening to escape. Slowly but surely, Pace came to the conclusion that he’d just spent the past couple of minutes nuzzling and kissing a girl who certainly wasn’t his prim and proper girlfriend, but instead, a much shorter acquaintance whose cheeks were rapidly turning the same colour as her hair.
“’Oops’ is a fucking understatement.” Bea said, not unkindly, as the man brushed past her to begin plucking volumes off the shelf. She shrank back, not wanting to be viewed through the window Pace had created, should someone see the two of them together and get the wrong idea. Pace, sweetly and pleasantly drunk, seemed to be completely aware of the conclusions people might draw from two people tucked away in a corner at a Halloween party. Especially when one of the two parties just so happened to have a girlfriend.
Pressing her lips together, Bea’s hands curled in the bright folds of her skirt, her palms suddenly feeling sweaty. She had no desire to glance through the makeshift window to see Cece standing in their identical costumes, looking slender and pretty and graceful, emulating Christine Daae in every way possible. As far as Bea was concerned, other girls were not her competition, but if they were, Cece would be winning in every way possible. It wasn’t enough that the other girl was a better dancer than her, did she have to upstage her in every other aspect?
As Pace turned, Bea shared a quick smile with him, trying to alleviate the embarrassment they were presumably both feeling. The moment Pace cracked a joke though, Bea immediately eased up, a low cackle escaping her lips.
“Thanks.” she laughed, leaning back against the row of shelves. She pressed her lips together, suppressing a smile as she watched him apologetically wring his cap between his hands, looking like some sort of fucking timid and adorable Victorian gentleman, deeply professing his apologies.
“The what?” Bea questioned, immediately moving to finger the curls that fell around her shoulders. Realising they were darker than her usual vibrant locks, she laughed again, the same dirty laugh spilling from her lips, always sounding as though someone had told a rude joke. Bea’s fingers caught under the wig, breathing a sigh of relief as she quickly discarded it, letting her own messy tangle of hair fall free. “Shit. Might be better to stay ginge for the rest of the night.”
Bea wondered when would be the appropriate moment to slip off and rejoin her friends at the party. When was a good time to do that after you just hit first base with someone else’s boyfriend? But wait, which one was first base again? If it was kissing on the lips, Bea guessed she was safe. There ought to be something that came before first base then, like, pre-base. Or, negative one base.
“You and Cece are pretty fucking cute.” Bea blurted out, the words sounding false to her even as she said them. “I mean, if that little display was anything to go by.”
No matter how much Bea swore in conversations that didn’t require such colourful language, Pace had learned not to think twice about it. It seemed that it was simply second nature for Bea to punctuate her words with whichever curse sprang to her mind first. Still, he bit his lip guiltily when she pointed out that his hushed ‘oops’ was, in her words, a ‘fucking understatement’.
“Uh… yes,” he agreed, eventually. He awkwardly bared his teeth, sucking in a breath between them and shrugging a little. He wasn’t sure what the correct protocol was for situations as awkward as this and chose to hope that Bea had some sort of clue so he wouldn’t have to blindly stumble through it.
He took another quick glance through the window he’d made on the shelves, just in time to see Cece glancing around the book store, possibly attempting to locate an untalented Newsie. In a flash, Pace shoved the books back where they belonged, despite realising that his actions had all the connotations of a guilty man. He knew that, technically, he hadn’t done anything wrong, but he doubted that Cece would see it that way if she found out. It wasn’t as if he truly believed she would care if Pace had liked another girl (not that he liked Bea in anything but a friendly way, no matter how pretty she was and had a cute nose crinkle), but the fact that he had kissed her in public – despite not knowing who she was – would be a personal front for the brunette ballerina.
He hovered awkwardly on the spot, not knowing what to do. Relief coursed through him when Bea eventually let out a laugh, the tension between them immediately melting away into their familiar camaraderie.
“Is there anything that says Christine Daae can’t be ginger?” he asked innocently enough, a smile playing on his lips. His grin widened when she pulled the wig, revealing the familiar vibrant red locks that resided underneath. Given the heat of the shop and how restricting the confines of the wig must have been for Bea’s head, Pace noticed that her hair was sticking up more than it usually did. His first act was to mentally commend her for committing to the outfit so willingly, and his second was to reach out and instinctively brush a loose curl from her face, the hair resting lightly between his first and middle fingers before he realised what he was doing and abruptly dropped his hand.
Quick to recover, he let out a stunted little laugh and stepped back again.
“I think I prefer you like that,” he nodded cheerily.
The smile faded when Bea pointed out that, if his mistaken kisses were any indication of his relationship with Cece, it must be a good one. He shrugged non-committedly and leaned against the bookshelf, slinging his cap back on top of his head.
“Well, I am drunk,” was all he said, not quite meeting Bea’s eyes. She didn’t need to know the ins and outs of his and Cece’s awkward relationship. All that he would very much like her to know was that the other girl wouldn’t be quite so quick to brush off the comical incident than the two of them had been.
“It might be best… if we don’t tell her this happened?” he ventured. The words felt dirty in his mouth, despite his guilt being misplaced. He hadn’t knowingly done anything wrong and neither had Bea, yet he still found himself shifting his weight on the spot, leaning on one foot then the other, hoping Bea wouldn’t question his words too much.
.lmfaobea:
As soon as Bea heard the greeting that fell from her mystery captor’s lips, she knew she hadn’t been accosted by an attention seeking Wardo or a mischievous Nate. Unless either of them had somehow perfected a French accent in the past few hours, she was almost certain the person with their arm fit around her waist was Pace. Letting out a lighthearted giggle, the dancer relaxed visibly. Bea liked spending time with Pace a lot, something she’d found herself doing more and more recently. The redhead couldn’t help but light up when she watched Emmeline bound excitedly into the dance studio, Pace in tow, face half obscured by his camera. They’d become part of the furniture in her weird life, and Bea was starting to suspect she’d miss them terribly whenever they decided to venture back to France, in search of croissants and people who didn’t use the word ‘chocka’ quite so much in everyday conversation. Cece, she’d certainly miss less. While Bea liked to think she’d tried hard to befriend the other girl, in the spirit of girlhood and camaraderie and all things Angelica Crawley, Bea just didn’t particularly like her. She always seemed so snippy and bored, like at any given moment she had some place better to be.
Shaking herself free of negative thoughts, Bea turned her attention back to her current predicament. She was unsure whether or not to chance leaning her full weight on him - all one hundred and fifteen pounds of her - given the fact she could distinctly smell alcohol on his breath. Not that she was here to judge, it was Halloween, after all, but she didn’t fancy toppling backwards and ending up with her knickers on display because Pace wasn’t quite so steady on his feet. The alcohol did, however, explain why Pace was suddenly so touchy-feely with her. The two of them had never really cuddled before, and Bea thought this definitely was veering into cuddling territory. Still, there were worse things to be than an affectionate drunk.
Be that as it may, the moment Pace’s lips brushed the pale skin of her cheek, Bea found herself involuntarily stiffening in his arms. Her shoulders squared a little as she shot up, no longer content to pliantly be cradled against his chest. Now she knew they didn’t do that. Her mouth opened a little to vocalise her shock, but no more than a soft, idiotic squeak came out as it occurred to Bea that she was embarrassed. As much as her friends liked to tell her she was pretty, and amiable, and that boys certainly looked at her, Bea had never noticed the weight of a boy’s full attention on her. Bea always got halfway down the street before Angelica good-naturedly informed her that some guy or another had been checking her out, leaving Bea whirling her head around manically, wondering whether or not Angelica had made it up.
But she certainly had Pace’s attention now, and Bea’s face was quickly growing to be the same colour as her hair. She tried to ignore the way her heart was hammering, already preparing three or four colourful jibes along the lines of ‘just how drunk are you?’ in order to lighten the mood, when he slid his fingers into the gaps between hers. He gave Bea a quick twirl that left her wondering if he was as bad at dancing as he made out, or whether it was simply liquid courage that had made his dancing so fluid. She’d open her mouth to ask, but it appeared she couldn’t get a word in edgeways.
Drunk Pace was sloppy and sweet, and made Bea want to laugh. He was nothing like the boys she’d met at the parties her one-time foster brother, Theo, had thrown. She remembered how they’d gotten drunk and broken things, and how Bea had hastily had to put in a call to Helen and Clark and ask them to come home to straighten him out. Bea remembered how hard the lines of his face had been, how cross with her. Pace was playful and excitable, still smiling, and Bea gently laid a hand on him to steady him as he leaned in to whisper something. At that precise moment, her heart dropped. He thought she was Cece. Oh, this was bad. This was massively, colossally, pretty fucking bad.
“Pace!” she warned, breathily. He didn’t relent though, quickly leaning in to brush happy, affectionate kisses to her cheek, and finally to her nose. Bea pushed down even the mere idea of butterflies, refusing to let them surface. Instead, she merely squeezed his arm in warning. Words had failed her, but it was a silent plea for him to back off.
“I - I…” Bea started, eyes darting over Pace’s shoulder in sight of the brunette she’d been mistaken for. It didn’t take long, given that Cece had the tendency to commandeer every room she went into. Bea’s eyes fell on the French girl, clad in a costume exactly like hers, only a few light touches differentiating the two girls. The curls tumbling down Cece’s back were hers, of course, and her pretty, unsmiling face was bare for all the world to see. Bea swallowed dryly, suddenly very aware of how bad this may look to her should she glance up.
Panic coursing through Bea’s veins, she abruptly placed a hand on Pace’s chest, and began marching him backwards and out of sight. The two disappeared behind a row of bookshelves, towering high, providing a clandestine cover for the pair. Casting a quick glance behind her to make sure she hadn’t been followed, Bea dropped her hand where it was still, for some reason, resting against his chest.
“Uh, Pacey?” Bea started, lifting a hand to her mask to pull it off.
Cece was being a lot more giggly than Pace was used to. It had been a long time since the two of them had been overly affectionate with each other, and Pace wondered if it was Cece he missed, or just someone who responded positively to his kisses and cuddles. In truth, it had seemed like an age since he and Cece had adored each other like they used to, and it had been somewhere in between Berlin and Rome that Pace had realised he didn’t feel as strongly about his girlfriend as he should. It was a relationship of convenience nowadays, which made it sound like some sort of arranged marriage that existed in one of those classic hardcover books Emmeline so loved. The characters in those marriages referred to each other by a formal Mr and Mrs, despite being husband and wife, and Pace could at least say that, although he and Cece weren’t the happiest of couples now, he couldn’t see her turning around and referring to him as ‘Monsieur Prouvaire’.
When he leaned into kiss her cheek again, the tip of his nose bumped clumsily off of hers and he giggled himself. He had drank enough for her apparent discomfort to go amiss to him, but then his girlfriend went and surprised him by planting a firm hand on his chest and pushing him backwards.
His eyes widened at once as he stumbled back between two of A Novel Idea’s towering bookshelves that cut off everyone else’s view of them. His brain, slightly addled with alcohol, provided him with a rather unrealistic interpretation of what was about to play out. It was maybe dumb of him to think so, but from Pace’s point of view everything pointed towards Cece pushing him behind the shelves to indulge in one of those clandestine make out sessions that he had only seen in movies before. He’d actually thought they were quite cringe-worthy, his face taking on an awkward wince when he watched the couple onscreen desecrate the non-fiction section. As he was marched backwards, his newsboy cap slipped over his eyes and he supposed he was grateful. He didn’t necessarily want to kiss his girlfriend when Stephanie Meyer’s most popular works were staring at him all the way through it.
He could still hear the music from the party but given that they were as far away from the speakers as possible, it was a little fainter hear, meaning he could hear Cece speak – only to realise that it wasn’t Cece at all. He stiffened a little, noting that the girl’s voice lacked the brunette’s distinct French accent. The accent he did hear was familiar though, especially when it wrapped around the five letters that made up the nickname only those close to him tended to call him by. Cece rarely referred to him as ‘Cece’ these days, but someone who held Christine Daae in the same high esteem as his girlfriend certainly did.
He pushed the rim of his newsboy cap back up, just in time to see Bea lift her mask from her face. All he could do was gape at her dumbly for a moment.
“Oops…” was the first thing that sounded from him. Quickly, he reached to the side and pushed a few paperbacks along the shelf, creating a window through the books, through which he could look and search for Cece. When he eventually found her, she was caught up in a conversation with Emmeline, who looked less than pleased to be on the receiving end of what was presumably one of Cece’s complaints.
Turning back to Bea, he winced a little, before cracking a sheepish smile.
“If it is any consolation, I think your costume is better,” he teased, sobering up a little and whipping his cap from his head, leaving his hair sticking up in all directions in its wake. He bunched the material of the hat in his hands and awkwardly glanced up at Bea. He hoped she wouldn’t be too mad at him, as it had been an honest mistake. Cece had never been so forgiving about honest mistakes though, and his mind flashed back to the tantrum she had once thrown when he accidentally recorded over one of her performances with footage of him and Emme feeding a squirrel they found in the park.
“I’m sorry,” he apologised. “I think it was the wig that fooled me.”
