Fondness blooms ever-stronger still at the sheer domesticity of Abel’s movements–the glint of his glasses as he sets them on the bedside table, his earnest endeavours dividing up the bed (unfairly in Kei’s favour, at that, though they’re hardly surprised), the gentle, inviting pat against the bedsheets. Really, this man is too cute, Kei thinks, propping their hands on their hips and cocking their head with a warm grin.
“Such a gentleman,” they quip, making idle work of removing their jewelry–a soft clink here and there as they near the other side of the bed to deposit earrings, rings, and necklace onto an odd little pottery dish they’d picked up from a local maker’s stall downtown years ago. Sitting on the edge of the bed, Kei yanks their shirt over their head. They click their tongue in mild frustration as they try to finagle the fabric around their horns, then fumble around in the nightstand drawer for a stray hair tie. It’s only once they have their hair tied back that they finally flop down onto the bed, stifling a yawn behind their hand. Scratching at the back of their neck, they roll onto their side to face Abel, black eyes gleaming faintly in the dim light. Quirking a small smile, they pull at the pillow-wall between the two of them, divvying up the bed more evenly for Abel’s sake.
“Mmh, are you gonna need another blanket? I run hot, so I don’t know if the comforter’s enough for you. Let me know.”
it clicks a few moments into kei taking off their shirt and that he’s only just sitting there turning his thumbs over and over into his hand; feet lightly kicking back and forth. i’m not even in the bed i’m just watching. the thought springs him forward as he tiredly tirelessly turns over on his stomach and throws the comforter on top of him.
left arm dangling over the side his right hand tucked up underneath his chin, face barely pink. “there’s no fan going on right? i should be fine with just this..” taking a second to pause abel pats down part of their pillow wall to the right so he can still make out kei’s face.
“i can sleep peacefully here, it’s not like your place is haunted.”

There’s a faint sense of amused vindication as August reels back, biting down on the tongue depressor like an angry chihuahua wrestling for a chew toy. Really, this person is troublesome, so I can’t feel too bad about it.
“Is that so? Thankfully, I can’t say the same about all patients being like you,” she remarks flatly, unruffled by his barrage of complaints and slander against her character. “You’re being melodramatic as usual. Settle down.”
The way his voice hikes indignantly at the word ’nice’ has Fran covering her ears with her gloved hands, expression impassive save for the faintest twitch of irritation at her brows. “Well, if you were a normal, reasonable patient, you would have known to lead with that. Quiet down, there are other patients in here.” There aren’t, but he doesn’t need to know that. Fran begins constructing a fake patient behind one of the curtained-off beds though, just in case he asks–Sunohara Chiyo, stomach bug, she’s resting, so don’t disturb her… that should do. With that settled, she heaves a resigned sigh and flips her palm out. In all manner except physical, she’s about to start speaking with air-quotes. “Let’s see these ’burned fingers’, then.”
“i’m...not lying to you...” tongue depressor still well situated between his teeth he chews after each word trying to make light out of the situation of almost being gagged.
“ but let me start from the beginning....” and luckily for fran she doesn’t even need to ask him how it happened!! august is already well aware that anyone would be curious, AND for such a diligent worker as he is accidents in the pursuit of furthering your strength is a cause anyone’s heart would ba-thump for. ”i got this quirk recently and well long story i was walking back home........and i found some guy on the street....his quirk was really lame it’s like a bic lighter and just ....... but you know knowing me there’s potential so i asked the guy if the liked to gamble....i won it easily and you know outta the blue a little flame shows up at the end of my finger......almost got caught....” (do you feel it fran? your heart growing? thrumming louder in your chest? you’re falling for me. i know it. everyone works hard these days but i work harder and i’ve got the injuries to prove that it. your heart breaks for me doesn’t it? “you don’t have to work this hard august, you’re already a great hero.” “no fran, i need to do this, to surpass all might i must push myself through the bring of exhaustion, because i’m strong.” “oh august i never thought you were so passionate about this, i’ve changed my mind about you”)

it’s totally not difficult to understand him at all speaking like his mouth is stuffed as he recounts his epic. “and that’s how i burned the pads of my fingers” OH and he holds his hands out. palms side down.

Post-dinner finds the two of them braving a frigid evening, if the visible puffs of breath dissipating into the air and (perhaps more tellingly to Kei, whose naturally-high body temperature is both blessing and curse depending on the season) the steadily-reddening tint to Abel’s face is anything to go by. The man is bundled admirably, adorably, swathed in shirt, sweater and coat, gloves over his hands and thick scarf neatly tucked into his collar. Judging by the way he steadily tips further against Kei, however, these efforts appear lacking against this particular bitter evening, and they cannot resist the amused little grin that tugs at their lips in response.
“Am I serving as your personal space heater tonight, Professor Ootani?” They tease good-naturedly, fixing him with a fond look. They lay a hand over their heart, feigning offence. “I always knew it would come to this… you, using me for my body.”
Kei cannot help the smile that inches wider still in response to the noise Abel makes at that–the one that seems to straddle the line between indignant and exasperatedly fond, unless they’re simply deluding themself about that. Turning to face him, they remove their hands from their pockets (ungloved, and they snort at the look of disbelief Abel shoots them) and raise them to cup at his face, marvelling first at the cold of them under their own warm touch, and then at the subtle way Abel leans into it. Cute…
“I will admit, I imagined it’d happen in a snowed-in cabin in the woods, something more atmospheric… I suppose I’m just an asthete like that. But you are very cold, I wonder if we can walk like this?”
“hahah, you already work for me don’t you?” desperate to avoid the wind’s belligerent push into his scarf and up the hem of his pants (as if he wasn’t already wearing the thickest socks he could find) abel creeps further into kei’s space.
“if you’re willing to put in the effort to save a freezing poor man like myself. then i believe we can make it the next few blocks to my apartment.” though there’s no place in saying how long that might take as abel adjusts his strides to keep up with kei’s hand. he had given up his pocket warmer just before the pair met for dinner. out of fuel and offering nothing more than a cool touch as it failed to light, professor ootani was confident that he’d survive their walk back when the forecast didn’t call for wind past 7pm.
“you make it sound nicer than it’d actually be: a cabin in the woods, alone and in the middle of a winter storm. without a working fireplace and fuel to use i have a hard time believing that your quirk wouldn’t manifest then.”

Ringo is right in the thick of it when the realization hits her, bowls her over a little–they’re getting along. There’s no malice in the shove of August’s warm palm pressed to her shoulder, nor any answering jeer in the laugh that bubbles past her lips in response to–something. Whatever it is they were talking about that lead them to this abrupt (was it abrupt?) shift towards camaraderie or… something. Something!
There has to be some duplicity at work. Some insidious plotting, or, or why else would he be smiling like… that… She thinks, frenzied, startling herself as the wary glance she casts in August’s direction lingers too long on the easy, crooked grin on his lips. Ba-thump, her heart responds of its own accord. ‘Ba-thump’?! What the hell are you ’ba-thump‘ing for?! Excuse me?! Ringo smacks a fist over the traitorous muscle, face heating, head whipping to the side. Don’t get swept up in the atmosphere!
“Okay, well–I have to run an errand–” she blurts, voice cracking, index finger jutting to point to the first shop in front of her. “At the… antique shop… I’m looking for a… thing.” Nailed it.
“oh! you’re going SHOPPING?!” then there’s no other place for august to be than tagging along! as humbling as it is being fate’s favorite lucky child nothing showcased august’s ability better than shopping. spending money, saving money. DEALS. if people weren’t impressed at how amazing he was at combat, academics, agility, sports, video games, cooking, comradery, singing, staying up late, showboating, making jokes, shooting clay pigeons, ping pong, typing, songwriting, bass guitar, piano, drums, the triangle, making spaghetti, making plans, making pizza, - [ A/N: LIST REDUCED FOR TIME AND SANITY ]
then they would be absolutely thrilled with how august could use his passive luck to garner fortunes! “HEY!! i can save you plenty of money! thanks for letting me tag along!!”

She thought only Present Mic could pull off that uncanny “living cartoon” look, but Abel’s reaction had buried the loud mouth DJ in the dust!
her laughter is infectious and abel only as a moment or two to laugh at himself before recollecting his thoughts and gathering up his papers. “you’re gonna help me with this you know...” there’s a significant spill at emi’s feet. “maybe i could get you to re-sort these files out for me..”
