I’ve taken down the video. Wasn’t aware just HOW bad it was and especially didn’t know how shitty and awful the developers were outside of the game. Some of it seemed like dumb teenager edgy humour but I didn’t realise that it stemmed from the devs having pretty awful mentalities IRL too. That recontextualises a lot of it and isn’t something I want to endorse.

Just bcuz a person doesn’t make it obvious, doesn’t mean they aren’t problematic. Sean makes the effort to not be problematic, bcuz he’s a good person, and that’s why he answers these types of asks. The One Problem I Have With The JSE Community

First off, I love the JSE community to bits. Jack has successfully created an accepting group of people, and everyone I’ve spoken to has been wonderful. However, there is something that bugs me.

Writers in the community are not given the same attention as other artists. And hey, I understand why. If shippy fanfiction isn’t your thing, that’s perfectly fine. But I’m not talking about that. I’m talking about the creepy Anti fics, the stories that build on community theories.

As a writer, this probably seems like I’m whining for attention. But I’m not. There are so many fantastic writers out there, and the stigma surrounding fanfiction is crushing them.

I think the main issue with who gets more attention than others isn’t always down to talent or the time taken to put into a piece of work. It’s how digestible it is. 

In social media culture it’s all about how much you can consume in the shortest amount of time and sadly writing isn’t conducive to that. It’s the same reason that memes get upvoted more and passed around more because it’s quick, easily digested and shared content that’s part of a specific joke that people like to feel a part of. Fanart is also quick and easy to to consume and pass along from a user perspective. 

I’m not saying people should stop writing, or editing or giffing etc. please keep doing all of those things because it’s  a great creative outlet for that side of you. Just please don’t let low note counts or reblogs reflect on you as a person and make you feel bad. People just consume different types of media very differently.

Okay I definitely understand the professor’s point, but two things:

1. Many times when someone wants to “play devil’s advocate,” it’s because they heard the argument from someone else and they don’t know how to respond. They want to hear your response so they can respond better themselves.

2. Even if the student really did want to defend/deny the Holocaust, that was an opportunity for the professor to model for every other student in that class how to refute the arguments of Neo Nazis.

A person faced with a question about their belief system that they cannot answer may begin to doubt that belief system. We do not want people to start doubting their belief in human rights for all because they’ve never been taught how to defend it.
