A little tour of my room!!
Three weeks into the semester and I’ve FINALLY gotten organized. Yippie!! I’ve been wanting to post some pics of my room but I never really got the chance until now! Enjoy!!
Hiking the Appalachian Trail? Heck YES!!
Hey everyone! So for my orientation, I went with a group of people including fellow ‘20 blogger Simona to hike (part of) the AT! The whole trip was a blast. I couldn’t contain my excitement knowing that I was going to step foot on one of the most famous and beautiful hiking trails in the United States!
The hike was the morning after I moved into my room, and I had so much anxiety knowing that I still needed to unpack more things when I returned. Still, it felt good to forget about moving-in, saying good-bye to my parents, and picking out college courses and just focus on the serenity of nature and where I’m going to be spending the next four years of my life!
I’m really glad that I had the opportunity to capture all these great moments with my camera (and share them with you!!!). The trek up Mt. Everett (not to be confused with Mt. Everest) was extremely exhausting and seemed never-ending, but when we reached the top and saw the valley below, I couldn’t help but feel proud to be where I am today.
I met some great people, walked on the AT, and hiked to the top of a mountain all just a day after arriving at Smith. Life is good.
REMINDER FOR FIRST-YEARS
it’s okay to feel overwhelmed
it’s okay to feel stressed
it’s okay to feel homesick
it’s okay to feel lonely
it’s okay if college isn’t everything you hoped for & expected immediately
i promise things will normalize and it will get better
in the meantime, take care of yourself! talk to someone you trust. see a counselor (they don’t bite!). reach out. advocate for yourself, even though it’s hard, and especially in this time of confusion & transition. you deserve to be there for yourself! especially if you struggle with mental illness, it’s crucial to build up a support network asap so you can navigate college with the resources you need.
remember, you belong here. there are so many people who want to see you learn, grow, and succeed 💕
Hey guys! I guess this post is a little late considering I’m already at Smith going through orientation, but I wanted to share some pictures of me packing anyway! I sent off 5 packages about a week before I arrived at the college. Since there was absolutely NO WAY I was going to take all my things with me on a plane, this was the next best thing! Gosh, I really wish I had some really cool “packing hacks” that I could let you guys in on, but sadly, I still have no idea how all my things got to Smith. It seems like everything was a blur! Hopefully next year I can be a little more organized with packing and unpacking! Get ready for s’more posts about how orientation is going for me! :)
How I Spent my Summer!
Since summer vacation is winding down, I just wanted to give you all a little summary of what I’ve been up to during these past 2 and a half months!
I had no job/work obligations this summer, since last summer I spent all my time getting ahead in a college pre-calculus class and never had the time to relax! I think I had my final maybe 4 days before school started again. I also figured that since I’ll be doing Work-Study at Smith, I should just enjoy the summer doing nothing and spending time with my family and friends.
In June I celebrated my 18th birthday and had my HS graduation party on the same day! It was super fun. My grandma even came all the way from Canada to celebrate with me!
Late June I went on a road trip with my dad to go camping and fishing up near Yosemite. We didn’t catch anything, but I was great to spend time in the outdoors nonetheless!
^ This was such a peaceful place. I wish I could go back!!
I worked on writing essays for some scholarships, and I won a couple too!
Seriously enjoyed walking my dogs every morning and evening (I’m really gonna miss them once I leave!)
^ Look at my cute pups!! They are both so pure
I spent some time with my friends as well. I know we’ll be able to keep in touch while we’re all away for school but I’m still so sad we’ll be apart for three months!
Read Into The Wild by Jon Krakauer. It’s been on my list of books to read for the past 3 years but I never got the time to finish it! I love books about getting lost in nature and appreciating your surroundings.
I went shopping for college!! Throughout summer vacation my mom and I have been hitting up so many stores to buy things for my room and classes! I’m still not done getting everything but I’m pretty close!
I’m still loving my last few weeks in California! A few days ago I visited my favorite camping spots with my dad. I had to see it one more time before I go to Smith. I’m definitely going to miss the redwoods while I’m gone!
^ Blurry pic of me on my way to see the redwoods!
I’m a little sad summer is beginning to end, but I couldn’t be more excited for my first semester at Smith! Wooo!!
March 25th 2016 was probably one of the best days of my life:
I had been feeling nauseous all day, thinking about what would happen if I got turned down from Smith. Weeks before I knew if I was accepted, I started following some forums of potential class of 2020 Smithies who were anxious as well for the decision. I thought it would be more comforting to hear other people’s stories, but it actually made me even more nervous!
When I finally got the email notification that the decisions were online, my stomach dropped and I felt like I couldn’t breathe. I asked my mom if I should check online, but she told me to wait a couple hours for my dad to come home from work. Se wanted us all to be together when I saw my admission result. But I couldn’t wait! I thought I was going to explode if I didn’t see right away! So I ran to my room, logged into my account as fast as I could and my jaw dropped in amazement. I was accepted to SMITH!
I was speechless, but a huge smile appeared on my face and tears formed in my eyes when I looked at my mother walking towards me. I could barely manage to say “I got in” and my mom started screaming!! I took a few deep breaths but my smile never left my face. We ran over to my neighbor’s a few houses away and told her the great news. She’s a Smith alumna! She started screaming, gave me a huge hug and started jumping with joy! I felt so proud, so accomplished, and so happy to have been accepted into such a wonderful and welcoming community. Secretly I knew that my heart belonged to Smith, even though I hadn’t even visited!
Housing!!
Yesterday I found out my housing assignment online! The notice emails were sent at around 11am yesterday but I (very sadly) forgot to check my email until 7 in the evening!! Right after I found out I was able to go out to dinner with my mom to celebrate (which was pretty fantastic)! I’m going to be living with 2 lovely roommates in Baldwin House! Upper and lower Elm St. houses were my top picks on the housing form, and I also stated that I really wanted to live in Baldwin!! I’m excited out of my mind to be a Baldwinite! Ahhh!!!!!
Why I Chose Smith
(before you begin reading, I want to apologize about how long this is! I just wanted to document my entire experience!!)
When I was thinking of what colleges to apply to, I found it really helpful when current college students told me their stories of how they picked their schools! Their advice was a huge part of me applying to Smith (without even visiting!) and eventually falling in love with everything about the college. I wanted to be able to tell my story of how I chose Smith and hopefully help whoever is thinking about applying! Here’s my story:
MY HIGH SCHOOL EXPERIENCE
In freshman and sophomore year of high school, I wasn’t that adamant about going to an all-women’s college, in fact, I never even thought about them! I wanted a small, private, liberal arts co-ed college either in Oregon, or Washington state. I looked at the prestigious universities that were very near to me like Stanford, UC Davis, and UC Berkeley, and I was turned off by the size of the class and the location. I never really saw me staying in California for college. I wanted a small school where I could enrich myself in academics and develop relationships with my professors.
I felt lost in my huge public high school like I didn’t belong there. I never found a community where I felt comfortable to be myself, and that’s what ultimately made me long for a smaller and more inclusive academic environment. At the end of sophomore year, I was fortunate to find out about a program called Middle College that gives high school juniors and seniors the opportunity to pursue their education on campus at a local community college. Students take two high school courses, and then round out the rest of their schedule with a variety of college courses. I immediately applied to go there and spent the next two years of high school taking college classes!
What really changed my perspective about the colleges I would apply to were the people that surrounded me at Middle College. These students all had similar ambitions and goals as I did, and their compassion and excitement about learning really made me come out of my shell! I finally felt comfortable in my school community! Woo!
One girl at Middle College was very into women’s colleges, and was going to visit some in the spring of my junior year. Since she spoke so highly of the schools, I asked her to bring back a couple of pamphlets from Sarah Lawrence, Simmons, Mount Holyoke, and of course Smith. When she returned from her trip, she couldn’t stop talking about how great the schools were and how they all felt like second homes. I became more and more interested in applying to a women’s college after talking with her.
EARLY DECISION
After doing lots of research and talking with alumnae from different colleges, I decided that a women’s college would be my first choice-- but it wasn’t Smith! I actually chose to apply to Wellesley College for Early Decision. I was confident that even though I hadn’t visited, I would fit right in. Here’s the thing: I thought I would be very happy at Wellesley, but there was always something in my head that was still unsure about applying Early Decision. I think the main reason I applied ED was because I liked the idea of getting all my applications out of the way and not feeling the anxiety of applying to other colleges. I just wanted to get into Wellesley and be done. But trust me, that is NOT the reason why you should apply to a school, especially when you could potentially be locked into going there!
I had mixed feelings the day I checked if I had gotten into Wellesley. I wanted everything to be over, but at the same time I was worried if I really wasn’t a good fit for Wellesley. That admission decision was truly a defining moment in my life. I was sad that I was denied, but at the same time I was really looking forward to applying to Smith and Mount Holyoke in the next month or so! I knew that I was meant to go to a different school. Wellesley turned out to be not for me, but that doesn’t mean that it’s not the best fit for anyone else!
WHY SMITH?
So, that’s the path that led me to Smith College! I actually got into both Smith and Mount Holyoke in the end, but here are the main reasons I chose to be a Smithie after staying at both campuses in the spring:
The Town: I never realized how great of a town Northampton was until I actually got to visit for Open Campus! I love the cute and quirky shops, restaurants, and cafes, the nice people, and the extremely close proximity to campus! It made me feel really comfortable how all these new, exciting experiences were just a short walk/bike ride away.
The Open Curriculum: Smith’s curriculum is so unique that outside of your major there are no required courses! Only one writing intensive class needs to be taken during your first year. Everything else is entirely up to you! I really like the idea of not being tied down to taking courses I’m not too interested in anyways. Smith’s open curriculum will really help me save more time in my education and lead me to focus on developing my major and possible future career!
The Great Traditions: I love how Smith has so many great traditions during the school year! I could tell when I visited how much these events strengthen the college community... that was something that I never felt at any college I had toured before! If you’re interested in learning more about these traditions like, for example, Mountain Day, Ivy Day, Otelia Cromwell Day, and Rally Day, check out this link!
The Five-College Consortium: Smith is not the only place where I can take classes! Four other colleges: Hampshire, Mount Holyoke, U Mass, and Amherst are all a short bus drive away from Smith. All students are welcome and encouraged to try new things and take classes at any of these colleges! If there is a subject I’m interested in but cannot find at Smith, it’s more than likely offered at another college! I also heard that if there is a book you can’t find at your college library, it can be quickly delivered to you from another school in the consortium!
The Campus: I love being surrounded by nature. It helps me think clearly, balances my stress level, and brightens my mood. Seeing how Smith’s campus is basically a huge botanic garden made me extremely happy! The idea of being able to look out your window and see such a beautiful place is so great! Fun fact: The actual campus landscape design was created by Frederick Law Olmsted, who is best remembered for designing Central Park in New York City!
The Atmosphere: This was probably the main reason I chose to attend Smith! Right when I stepped onto campus, everything went into perspective. I was greeted by smiling students and extremely welcoming faculty. I can’t explain how nice it was to feel like I was immediately part of an empowering community of strong women! At Smith, the people around you want you to succeed. Students there have countless opportunities to take extra classes, work closely with faculty, and find their passions in life! It was just really great to see people who were proud of their work, their school, and their community.
Prospies, you’re not alone. Applying to colleges can be very stressful and sometimes scary, but just know that everything happens for a reason! If you don’t get into your first choice, it wasn’t meant to be! That’s the main thing I took away from this experience. I hope my story can help someone out there who’s thinking about Smith! Thank you for reading!

Meet the Blogger!
Hi guys! My name is Julia, and I am excited beyond belief to be a class of 2020 Smithie! I really want this blog to reflect my growth and experiences at Smith and hopefully assist prospective students as well!
I’m from the Bay Area in California. As for my course of study, I’m currently focusing on three different majors/minors: Engineering, Biology, and Environmental Science and Policy. I hope to incorporate all of these subjects into a type of scientific research career in the future, I don’t know what yet, though!
Some cool facts about me:
My Myers-Briggs personality type is ISFJ
I enjoy camping, hiking, fishing (catch and release, of course!), and just being in nature!
I was part of a program called “Middle College” for my junior and senior year of high school that allowed me to take all of my classes at my local junior college. This allowed me to get college credits and become familiar with the college atmosphere!
For the past four years I’ve served as a leader of a youth search and rescue team and have actually found and helped missing people in my community!
I spent a year fundraising for microloans directed towards women in Guatemala so that they can start their own small businesses and gain money for their families! I went to Guatemala as well to hand deliver these microloans and learn more about microfinance in impoverished countries!
I love to sing! It’s my favorite hobby and I’m planning on joining a singing group at Smith
I’m a vegetarian and currently transitioning vegan (I’m trying my best!!)
Future Work Study student!
Just to conclude this introduction to my blog, if you have any questions about choosing a women’s college, what I did during high school (community service, taking college classes during hs, etc.), regular decision applications, or anything about applications for that matter, I’d be more than happy to answer them!
