what makes me sad about azriel’s father is that. he was not inherently a bad guy ? at least not at first. but he had a very warped sense of .. authority and discipline. extremely religious and a veteran drill sergeant , he knew exactly how he wanted his life to be. how he wanted his children to behave and present themselves. whereas azriel’s mother had always been the more understanding and lenient one , that’s not how azriel’s father rolled. his way or the highway is how he ran the house.

he treated azriel as more of ... a trainee , than a son. not when he and his sister were first adopted , of course. he eased into the strict discipline and shit like that. but no matter how much he “ eased ” into it , his emotions would still give azriel fuckin’ whiplash on most days.

now of course , a father like that and a petty teen , is recipe for disaster. of course azriel was bound to start acting out. staying out late , face full of piercings , covering himself in shitty stick n poke tattoos. he spent ten years in the system watching over his baby sister , he made sure the social worker knew he wasn’t getting adopted without her. but now was his time to make a goddamn fool of himself.

and yes , of course azriel was and always will be a mama’s boy --- hell , that shit’s tatted on the side of his face for christ’s sake. but he and his father had always been at odds with one another.

even when that man was on his deathbed , he was trying to dictate and shit on everything azriel did.

he wasn’t taking the right care of his mother , he dressed like an idiot , the tattoos made him look cheap. he’s not a girl , wearing make up and growing out / painting his nails made him look ridiculous. the piercings were stupid , dyeing his hair weird colors was going to give him nothing but unwarranted stares and hushed whispers behind his back.

although there’s a part of azriel who loves his father , a part that still respects him to this day ... he’ll never forgive that man for the way he belittled him.

azriel’s dad kicked him out of the house when he was fifteen because he came home with a tattoo that his friend gave him in his basement. it lasted a little over a month before his mother was forcing his father into letting him come home. azriel was 100% ready to never come back , though.
