Summary: We’re such good friends/coworkers that people think we’re together and I was really tired and agreed with them and now they think we’re together and I’m so embarrassed can you just go with it? Please?
James isn’t 98% of the details but he’s pretty sure that since he’s been three years old, Thomas Jefferson has been his best friend. They spent summers milking cows, racing the dirt track and taking his mom’s jars and filling them with lightning bugs.
Now, they spend their freshman year of high school writing college essays and attending track practice. Thomas, bless his heart, finds time to play the violin and write poetry. Meanwhile, James Madison Jr. can barely keep his eyes open.
His US History is droning on and on about Daveed Digg’s importance to writing the Declaration of Independence and how important it is. James, is fighting the urge to succumb to the summer cold as he feels his eyes grow heavy with each second. He’s halfway to falling asleep on his desk when a pencil pokes him in the cheek.
It does the trick and he glares at Thomas as he sliently laughs at him. Yet, he can’t help but shake his head at him. The rest of the class, he’s fighting the urge to grin at this boy, of all people.
However, in his trig class, Thomas is not in this one and it’s James by himself. And while trig usually excites him, he only got four hours of sleep*. And as he’s drifting off, some juinior decides it’s the best time to engage him in conversation.
Some juinior with a voice. “Hey James, are you and Thomas a thing? You’ve been together for like, what, ten years? Right?” They say, excited.
Normally, James would have said: “Mind your business.” And they would leave him alone, until the next time (probably the next time Thomas smacks his butt). But James is falling asleep and the quickest way to get someone to shut up is to give one word answers. Also, in his defense, he thinks they’re asking him if Thomas are hanging out cause if so the answer is—
Let’s be more than friends
James somehow dozed off during the first ten minutes of trig but thanks to the sounds of desks scrapping the hard tile floor, he wakes up to a flurry of student activity. He winces slightly before rubbing his eyes. His teacher, Benjamin Franklin, thankfully, is telling everyone the project that is due at the end of class.
Thanks to the foresight he had to read one chapter ahead (unlike SOME people), based on Mr. Franklin’s instruction, he’s able to get to work. He’s almost focused enough to hear the whispers of students but he forces himself to remain focus.
Thankfully, as he predicted, he’s able to finish right before the bell dismisses them. He grabs his books, ignoring the whispers of his older classmates. They’re just jealous you got done early, he assures himself. Right?
It isn’t until lunch with Thomas that James is confronted by why everyone seems to be staring at them. As he sits down to greet him, Thomas has an eyebrow raised and a smirk. Before James can say, hello, Thomas beats him to the punch:
“Hey James, I hear we are a thing since we were in diapers?” Thomas’s laugh is infectious and James would be leaving if his face wasn’t so red. “Like, does this mean our anniversary is homecoming or—“ Thomas is full blown cracking up and James groans loudly.
“Thomas.” He’s expasterated as he’s never been before because it’s hitting him why everyone is whispering and staring. Thomas stops laughing before cracking a dazzling smile at him.
“Yes, Jemmy*?” Thomas asks, sweetly, like he’s not smirking at him as a devil would.
James shoots Thomas back an eye roll before huffing to himself. He runs his hands through his hair before remembering his hair will stick out in all directions. He quickly slides his hands down his jeans to wipe off all this sweat. He sighs, knowing Thomas silent but probing air will not be clear until he confesses.
“I kinda, well, sorta, you see.” James take another deep breathe before composing himself. “So, I was falling asleep in trig and someone decided it would be the perfect time to ask me if we were dating. And I thought they were asking about if we were friends and stop laughing it’s not funny!” James sputters as Thomas dissolved into laughter.
It’s several minutes before Thomas shakes out of it. During Thomas’s laughing spell, it seems everyone has their eye on them even closer than before. James can feel his face turn even redder and warmer. He ends up putting his gaze down, for some reason he feels so many emotions at once. It’s frieghtening and he doesn’t like it in the slightest and—
“Hey.” James looks up to see Thomas in closer proximity. It hits James that Thomas is here for him, despite this stupid, dumb mistake and yet...
James clears his throat. “Thomas, I have a favor to ask,” he begins. Thomas quips an eyebrow at him with a teasing grin. James takes a deep breathe:
“Would you mind playing along? Just, we can figure out the rest. I figured this way people can at least stop all this staring.” James can’t help but gesture wildly at the sea of students who are eyeing them up.
Thomas looks at him softly, like James might shatter into a million pieces. He smiles and nods.
Dating your best friend, as it turns out, is a little bit different. For example, James had known Thomas to be quite handsy. Even as friends, they use to hold hands while walking home. Now, it’s a little bit different
Thomas has his big (warm) hand in James left Jean pocket as they walk down the hall, together. Thomas is practically glued to his side that their teachers aren’t letting them work together (because apparently they are “corrupting the student body” or whatever that means.) but it’s a small price to pay when Thomas kisses his cheeks for greeting.
It seems to James that everyday, Thomas is kissing closer and closer to the corner of his cheeks. James can’t help but feel like he wouldn’t mind if Thomas kissed his lips....
And maybe a little more...
