Katherine was one of very few who bothered to ask her these sorts of questions. The rest knew better, knew that Renata existed solely to protect Aro, to stand with him, and him alone. “ As well as can be expected, I suppose, ” she mused with a soft hum. “ And yourself…? ”

katherine knew that renata disliked when aro took someone else in place of her. she understood, as she herself disliked it when alec asked someone else to follow him. but lately, he had become more && more distant with her. the guard stepped further into the home, eyes running around the walls. it was quiet in here           too quiet for a bunch of volturi guards.

she turned to look at renata, happy to see that she was okay with talking about herself && not aro. chelsea’s gift had impacted all of them, but she felt like renata always got the worst of it. ‘ well, thank you. trying to keep alec in check as always. who would’ve known that child would cause so much problems. ’ she laughed.

Renata watched the other woman as she looked around, her own expression remaining a soft neutral. “ no one else is here, ” she offered, following Katherine's gaze. “ they've gone to hunt. ” a faint note of distaste was present in her tone, but only just. she disliked hunting in general...but when it came to many of the Volturi guards...it went far beyond that. they were cruel, unnecessarily so, and sadistic in their treatment of the humans they took. “ keeping Alec in check... ” she repeated, a faint smile tugging at the corners of her lips. “ they've given you an impossible task. ” Katherine was likely one of the only ones who would be able to detect the hint of teasing affection in her very nearly flat tone. she was one of the only ones who would care to listen.

“ I'd have thought you'd have known me long enough to know that the thirst isn't as much of an issue for me as it is the rest, ” she responded quietly, tone subdued. She'd never been quite sure why that was -- maybe it was simply because she took no pleasure from feeding and killing. Whatever the reason, her self-control had always been exceptional. “ Katherine is bringing... food. ” or so she hoped. The prospect of having to hunt alongside Chelsea was... daunting, to say the least.

Her expression remained neutral as she watched the other vampire, before shaking her head. “ I'll be fine, ” she murmured, ignoring the fire blazing in her throat. “ I can last a few days more. ”

She couldn't help but blink in surprise at Katherine's words, her brows drawing together as though the very concept puzzled her. “ he...has been leaving without me frequently, ” she admitted, tone wary. “ I would prefer to remain at his side in case of trouble. ” Did that count as giving her trouble? She wasn't entirely certain. There was a flash of eagerness in the guard's gaze when the other vampire mentioned she might stay --- but it vanished no sooner than it had appeared. She shrugged, the motion stiff and awkward. “ If you would like. ”

Katherine nodded her head, stepping into the establishment with a distinguished chuckled. “No problem. Can’t have you all being hungry.” She wasn’t a fan of being referred as part of the Volturi Guard. She wasn’t - Not entirely. But that didn’t mean she didn’t care for the rest. “How are you doing, Ren?”

She kept her gaze trained on Katherine as she entered, expression neutral after her initial smile. Katherine was...unlike the majority of the Volturi members. She and Renata had that much in common. The petite vampire liked her -- as much as Chelsea's manipulations allowed her to like anyone, of course. “ I'm well, ” she assured the other woman softly, the very beginnings of a smile ghosting across her features. “ ...will you stay? ”

Another of the guards -- Katherine. Jane's personal guard as well as mate. Renata inclined her head in a slight nod, stepping back from the doorway to allow the other vampire to enter. “ thank you, ” she murmured, tone mild. She was thirsty, just as they all were, always...but the thirst didn't bother her so much as it seemed to do others. “ I suppose so... come in. Please. ”

“ what is it that you need? ” the question was concise, but not curt, and not impolitely so. Eyes black as pitch surveyed the visitor to her temporary home --- shared with only a very select few others. There was no way to know just yet if they'd come looking for her, or someone else. Standing at only five feet tall, and with a calm, almost withdrawn air, she hardly looked like the proper candidate for the personal bodyguard to the leader of the Volturi.

His sigh put her on edge, chest aching at the thought of displeasing him. She was so inextricably bound to Aro that protecting him had literally become her reason for being --- the only reason behind her continued existence. “ All I need is the knowledge that you are safe, ” she murmured, dark gaze fixed on her hands. “ A reprieve of duty means to leave your side, to allow for possibilities that shouldn't rightly exist. ” The thought of Aro being attacked --- or gods forbid, harmed --- while she sat distant and idle did not sit well with the guard. If she was kept from her rightful place, within arm's reach where she could protect, fulfill her purpose... she couldn't properly fathom it.

“ I know it's not my place to ask, Master... ” she began, speaking softly, keeping her gaze downcast in a show of clear deference, “ but I would prefer if you would allow me to accompany you on your business with the covens... ” her loyalty was to him, and him alone --- the fact had not once been called into question --- and it was clear she only wished to better serve, better protect. @volturileader

she flinched away from the other vampire before their hands could touch. she could have used her gift, of course, but she saw little need to do so. Corin should know better than to persist. “ you know he prefers you not touch me, ” she murmured briefly, turning eyes black as pitch on the other woman. “ I do know him — and I know that he never leaves Volterra without me. he shouldn’t have made me stay — there are those here who would do him harm. ” she stopped breathing all together to hide the way that her breaths would have become frantic in her anxiety. she did not like to be apart from Aro, not when she could be of use. “ I don’t care for forgiveness — what I care for is his safety. ”

“ personal or not, it doesn't matter, ” she shook her head, fingers moving endlessly, nails picking idly at her own skin. “ it's not that ---- it's just... he never leaves without me. he's vulnerable. I can't protect him if I'm not there... ”

“ Aro insisted upon leaving unaccompanied... ” the small vampire murmured, staring downwards, wringing her hands anxiously. it was a simple statement, but her stance and motions betrayed just how effected she was by the situation.
