Scarlett didn’t exactly know why she was in this small town - most of them made her shiver remembering her past. Especially when they looked at her trying to connect where they could know her from. Still ducking down they didn’t pay to much attention. After all she told Kai that she could  do this. 

She could be left alone for periods of time after all at two hundred if she couldn’t be she’d be fucked. Still like everyone else the Vampire occasionally needed things, bobby pins, a hair brush, and some bleach. 

It took her a moment to notice the girl behind the counter, but once she did Scar couldn’t help but have a small half smile before ducking into the isle. After all it would be silly to bother anyone in this town. Still as she rounded the isle she wasn’t quite sure where the bobby pins were. 

Without much convincing needed Scar slipped quietly in front of the girl and gave her a small smile. 

“Hey, I’m new and I’m going to be honest I just want some bobby pins and I think if I ask you I don’t have to spend the next twenty minutes looking for them.”  

Eva watched the girl over the top of the magazine as she approached and began to speak. A smile formed behind the pages, but it vanished as the magazine dropped. “It probably would’ve been twenty minutes, they’re at the other end of the store.” Eva nodded towards the isle against the wall opposite to where the girl was looking. She stood up and walked over to grab some for the girl, shaking the product lightly while baring a playful smile on her face as she walked back to the cash register.

She sat back down on the stool behind the counter and placed the bobby pins front and centre. Placing two fingers on top of the package she looked the girl in the eyes and slid it across the counter. “Anything else?” Eva queried, playful smile still present.

Eva let out an over exaggerated sigh and tried to move the piece of hair that was dangling between eyes. She scanned the store. Aside from the fan motoring on behind her, nothing moved. She glanced over her shoulder at it. Maybe if she tried to count how many times the blades rotated the time would go by faster. Her eyes turned back to the clock in the bottom right hand corner of the cash register screen. It had been fifteen minutes.

The entrance bell grabbed her attention the moment it rang. Eva watched as a short, dark hair girl entered the store. Silently she watched as the stranger made her way down the far isle. Eva grabbed a magazine from underneath the counter and began to skim a random article, peaking over the top every so often to steal a look at the mysterious girl.

One good thing about being dead was that Kyle could skate whenever he wanted. No school, no moms, no other responsibilities he had to respect before he took his board to the street. Another good thing?

His body hit the ground, scraping his knees against the hard cement, and he didn’t feel any of it. He sat on the soft grass for a while after that. It was still dark out, with a hint of morning just beyond the trees. Since his death, he’d seen more sunrises and sunsets than he could count, he was always around for it. It wasn’t anything special anymore, but sometimes… Sometimes it took his metaphorical breath away.

He pushed himself up off the ground, and dropped his skateboard, preparing to take off again when a voice stopped him. She could see him. “Oh, uh…” He laughed. “Early bird gets the worm, or whatever.” He nodded towards her. “What about you?”

“Just thinking.” She smiled, toying with her headphones for a moment before shutting the music off. “It’s nice when no one is around, especially with the people in this town. It seems like after you’ve been here for a week, everyone’s heard of you or was looking forward to meeting you.” More accurate than the boy probably knew, Eva had only been there for a couple of weeks and already she was recognized upon sight or after they heard her name. News travelled too fast here for her liking. The size of the town made it easier for her to get her bearings, but it also trapped her. She’d already figured out a fair bit, and she knew that if she continued at her current rate, there wouldn’t be anything left to figure out soon.

“There’s no anonymity here. If you fuck up you can’t really start over, can you?” The question was rhetorical, but he was welcome to answer it if he wanted to. Eva gestured to his skateboard with a nod. “Are you going to try a trick or something? Or are you not very good yet?”

Eva sat on the park bench with her headphones in and music blaring loud enough that if people were around her, they would have been able to hear it. She looked around, and just like when she had first arrived, saw that the park was deserted. Not that she had expected a crowd - it was 5 am - but usually there was one morning jogger with their dog or something. Regardless, Eva kept looking around. Her persistence quickly paid off as her gaze came to rest on a young man around her own age. At first she just stared at him, cocking her head slightly to the side, as she waited for him to notice her back. It wasn’t long before he looked her way and she removed her headphones, music still playing. “What are you doing here this early?” Of course, he could ask her the same question, but she had asked first.

So as some as you know I’ve grown up in the smallest of small towns, which was (as all small towns are) pretty conservative and oppressive a place to be but also hosted some of the most colorful people I’ve known so far, like

the local veterinarian who had the biggest heart for both animals and humans, and who crinkled his eyes when he smiled, in such a way you couldn’t not smile back at him. He was nicknamed “the Russian” even though he most definitely wasn’t Russian

a really old lady who would offer you candy that had been in the jar since before WWII, and who had a parrot that would scream insults at you as soon as you entered her house

the man who as long as I can remember rode around town on his tricycle which had little wooden trains tied behind it, and who would make train sounds at everyone who said hello

the nuns that lived a couple doors down, with one nun who was so very old she didn’t really remember what they were doing whenever they went to church, and would start skipping ahead and leave the other nuns to run after her

a man who would always wear short skirts and high heels, and would loudly sing as he rode by on his bike on Saturdays

a farmer who seemed to always have been a hundred years old but would somehow still run his farm pretty much by himself and would always have strawberries in the summer that were as large as my face

a football player who played a couple of games in “foreign countries” and was such a local celebrity people would go stare at his family’s house when he came over for Sunday brunch

a lady who had her own little magazine store and who had this huge perm and wore loop earrings and drank sherry every day, and she sold her candy for 2 or 5 cents a piece and she always had old American pop songs playing in the background
