Triple Threat Shady Shin

Name's Shin. Some people think I'm kind of a shady individual, and maybe they're right. But maybe they're wrong, and I've got an offer you'd have to be stupid to refuse.

3. Shin is an only child, most likely due to the fact that his parents spent more time fighting than they did having sex.

19. Shin carries a lot of disillusions about his job, love, people, the world… He has a very cynical and dark outlook on life, which has only gotten worse since he’s lost his bending. At one time, he was a happier kid who just wanted to be cool, to be noticed, and to be important. At one time, he was a puberty-stricken teenager who, nonetheless, thought love could be real. At one time, he was a man who believed all he had to do was go with the flow in life, and he’d be fine. None of these things really hold true now.

39. Shin likes to ridicule the police, “truth and justice”, the concept of love, and altruism. Naturally, these are things he finds stupid. He’ll also ridicule anyone just for the sake of ridiculing. 

46. Shin is a tall, lean man with perhaps a slight bit of pudge in his middle area that he tries to get rid of (and is no doubt the fault of too much junk food). His posture is not exactly the greatest, given his tendency towards leaning over people, leaning against things, and just having a natural sort of lean in his walk, too. Shin is terribly conceited and vain. He thinks his body is nature’s gift to men and women (especially women), and he is somewhat obsessive about maintaining his appearance.

32. How does your character react to stress situations? Defensively? Aggressively? Evasively?

Shin’s reaction to a stressful situation depends a lot on HOW stressful the situation is and what exactly the stressful situation entails. A mildly stressful situation, for instance, will probably allow him to keep his cool, to brush it aside, and deal with the feelings involved later. He most likely will react in an evasive manner: changing the subject or making inappropriate/ill-timed jokes to make light of the situation. Shin does a lot of bottling of his emotions.

A highly stressful situation may cause a number of different reactions. For instance, if the highly stressful situation involves having his life in danger, Shin will rapidly lose his cool and immediately debase himself, grovel incessantly, and do whatever is necessary to save his skin. If the highly stressful situation involves an emotional-type situation, Shin will either shut down... becoming very cold, cruel, and harsh... Or if he’s been bottling his emotions for a while, he will explode. He will throw a temper tantrum of epic proportions: throwing things, kicking things, attempting to start a fight with whoever is in his warpath (or just outright beating on someone if they’re weaker than him or not willing to fight him). He does this even at the detriment of himself occasionally breaking the bones in his hands or feet, which is something he won’t usually notice until after he’s burned himself out.

Shin typically deals with stress by smoking (usually when he’s nervous or agitated), drinking excessively (drinking to forget terrible things or situations), and sex (helps him feel more alive; relieves tension).

16. What does your character do for a living? How do they see their profession? What do they like about it? Dislike?

Shin is a member of the Triple Threat Triad. His position in the triad is not terribly high, but it’s not very low, either. It’s a happy kind of medium that leaves him important enough for some respect and yet not so important that other people are gunning for his head. He is basically an experienced mook, generally doing such things as running small-time drug deals, get-away driving, debt collection, information-gathering, running various deliveries and smuggling operations, rigging fights and pro-bending competitions, the occasional corpse drop-off, and of course participating in turf wars among various other criminal activities. His main gig also involves recruiting: finding people down on their luck to run jobs for the triad. Shin does not typically help with the protection racket... even when he did have his bending, brute force wasn’t really his style or his strength.

Shin sees his profession as a necessary evil and believes organized crime to be far superior to unorganized crime (he doesn’t see himself as a common criminal but rather a high-class criminal). What Shin likes about his job is that it is familiar to him, and he’s good at it. He’s able to effectively use his skills (lying, smooth-talking, street smarts, etc.) to get the job done. It’s never dull, it pays well enough, it offers him a kind of protection from people much stronger than him (you mess with one Threat, you mess with them all), and it’s usually not labor-intensive and gives him time to enjoy his time. He also considers it a bonus that he gets to interfere with the police, a group of people that he has never particularly liked.

What Shin dislikes about his job is the brute force side of it. He does not have much of a conscience, but he does have a little bit of one. He doesn’t like that there are people in the triad that are involved in heinous activities like torture and murder. He doesn’t like witnessing these things or being a part of it in any way. In addition, he doesn’t like the pressure of his job, either. If he makes a few wrong moves, he could risk infuriating his boss and losing his limbs or his life. There’s also the problem of making a lot of enemies outside the triad. Another thing he dislikes about the job is that he’s trapped in it. He knows that if he tries to get out, he’s a dead man. And that’s all there is to it. This has left him with some bitterness and resentment towards his lot in life. He’s also aware that being a Triple Threat is probably going to leave him with a shorter than average lifespan because of the dangers involved.

Mako groaned a little, not moving from his area on the dark road but opened his eyes to see who was talking. The figure blurred but he couldn’t work out why. Trying to move felt like a really bad idea but he tried anyway. 

“Hm?” He grunted, trying to push himself up, he raised his head to see his bike lying crippled and spread out a little over the road. He groaned again. “What..do you want..Shin.” He grumbled, pressing his face back to the floor, hissing as he felt the small scrapes imbed with dirt.

Half hearing Shin, Mako kept his focus more on what he could feel and what was in pain. Memory of what happened was not in his recollection.  His legs didn’t feel broken but from the long road burns down one leg the material stuck to the broken skin. His ribs ached though no breaks, bruising and other wounds. However, given the angle of his wrist, that was definitely broken alongside the scratches. 

He gently pushed himself up with his unbroken wrist, grinding his teeth in the process,

“One…thing at a time” He snapped, irritant with the pain. He slowly clambered to his feet wobbling dangerously but retained his balance though everything did wobble. He let his wrist hand loose, the pain stabbing running through the rest of his arm.

Shin almost moved to help steady Mako but stopped short when he had gotten his balance all alone. The Triple Threat took a long drag on his cigarette. "Yeah, okay, but hurry it up. This ain't exactly a good situation for me to be seen with you, y'know." He paused a moment, studying Mako carefully. "Can't believe you came here in your uniform. Fuck. Becoming a pig-dog has turned you stupid. You used to be smart."

Good. The kid hadn't been knocked out, then. Shin shoved his hands in his pockets, not making a move to help Mako. He took a look around as if checking to make sure they were alone. "You picked a bad part of town to go crashing your bike in, kid. You're lucky I found you and not someone in the mood for pig-dog blood." He nudged at Mako gently with his foot. "You gonna lay there all day and whimper like some kittenling or are you going to get up? I swear to Yue if you've broken your fucking leg, I'm going to be pissed." He continued to glance around occasionally, and he seemed nervous. He pulled a cigarette out of his pocket and lit it. He inhaled deeply. "The only thing I want is to know what the fuck you're doing here, to keep your pig-dog nose out of any business going on around here, and for you to get the fuck out of this neighborhood before you have more trouble than a broken bike."

Shin seemed to relax a little when the dog back off; though, he kept glancing at it every now and then, with a wary look. He raised an eyebrow at Korra’s request. He managed a grin.

“Heeeeeeeeey, now. I’d be honored to be called the Avatar’s friend. A favor like this? For you? Anytime. You tell me which whiskey from the Fire Nation exactly you’re looking for, and I’ll get it here before the big day, hm? Easy peasy.”

“It has the name Miroku’s on it I think.. It’s a tall thin bottle, kinda fancy looking..” Korra said quickly, looking up as she tried to remember all the details about it. She wasn’t too knowledgeable about these sorts of things since she’d barely even had a drink herself.  Now that she was trying hard to remember it, she was having trouble. 

“I figured, since you would probably be coming to her party anyway, you’d be perfect to help me do this.” Rubbing the back of her head she felt guilty for trying to scare him. She probably could have just used her normal approach, but she was wary of most triad members.

So, the Avatar didn’t drink much, did she? Shin smirked a little. “I know exactly what you’re talking about. Hard little drink to get a hold of... costs a pretty penny, too. But hey, I think I can work something out.”

He crossed his arms over his chest and adopted a more casual pose. “Consider it done, Avatar. And you just lemme know if you need anymore favors done because just maybe, I might be your guy. Who knows? Maybe you could do a favor for me someday.” He shot her another charming grin.

Shin seemed to be trying to back into the wall even further than he was already. A large, growling animal made him very nervous. He gave Korra a nervous smile. “Avoiding questions? Me? Never. Come on, now.” Shin considered how much yuans he had on him. No. No, he definitely didn’t have enough to pay Asami back. He did, at one point, but that was before he gambled it all away. 

“Hey, now. Who’s been spreading these lies about me? Who said I had no intention of paying her back? I’m gonna pay her back. You think I’d risk ticking off a Black Dragon? No, thank you. I’d pay her back. It’s just, y’know, it’s taking a little while longer than I thought.” He shook his head rapidly. “Eh heh heh, no, no. Let’s not get my face chewed off by Naga. Look, I have a pretty face, all right? And I’m sure I don’t taste good. All smoke and skin and nothing tasty about me at all.” 

He gave Korra a wary look. “What exactly do you mean by a little favor? I mean, always happy to try and help the Avatar, but I’ve got… obligations.”

“I don’t know who is telling stories, I’m just the one that was standing close enough to hear them. Unfortunate for you.” The Avatar sighed some, nodding to Naga who instantly quieted down and sat beside her attentively. She still wasn’t used to people referring to Asami at a Black Dragon seeing as how she’s only found out about her role in the triads a short while ago. It took her by surprise, though she did her best not to show it, just how afraid he seemed of Asami, it was definitely a side of her that the southerner had never really gotten to witness. She wasn’t sure if she wanted to.  

Once he finished what could only be compared to begging for his life, by life she really meant he was begging for his face not to get hurt, Korra had finally heard enough to get to her point. 

“Well it’s simple really, I’m looking for a person who can help me import a certain kind of whiskey from the fire nation.” Once he gave her a funny look she continued, “You see, it’s Asami’s favorite and I’m just now finding out that it’s really hard to get especially here in Republic city. Her birthday is coming up and I just kinda wanted to do something nice for her.” She shrugged before adding, “So this is more as a favor between.. friends.. maybe, though I’m hesitant to use that word.”

“Sounds to me like he’s avoiding the question..” Glancing up at Naga, the giant dog responded by growling and baring her teeth taking a few steps closer to Shin as Korra took a step forward. Putting her hands on her hips now, the Avatar sighed softly giving Shin a worried look.

“I’m not doing any triads any favors, you’ve got it wrong.” She explained with a smile, reaching up to pet Naga which instantly silenced her. “But you see, Naga here really likes Asami so when she heard that someone had borrowed money from her with no intent to pay it back she got a little.. upset.” More growling from above the Avatar started instantly and she slowly sauntered over and leaned against the wall beside him. “So you’ve got some choices here. You can pay the money back, which doesn’t seem likely; you can get your face chewed off by Naga, which is very likely; or you can do me a little favor.”

Mako just raised his eyebrow, his arms folded though gently with the bruises under his clothes and ht tape over his ribs. “We have witnesses, Shin and my personal experience. Which Triad blind sided me and knocked me off my bike?”

“Personal experience? Since when have I ever hit you with my car?” Shin snorted. “Frankly, I’m hurt that you’re accusing me, Mako.” He didn’t have the voice of someone who sounded hurt. He sounded more annoyed than anything. “I’m telling you it wasn’t me. And y’know, the cars the Triple Threats use? They ain’t exactly exclusive. Anyone with yuans and access to a Satomobile lot could pick one of those puppies up. And anyway, use your head for a second. You know how delicate I am with my car. She’s my pride and joy. I ain’t gonna risk chipping off her paint just to knock you off your bike.”

It was the same story with Shin, dancing around the truth. The truth was he hadn’t knocked Mako off his bike. And yes, it was true that Satomobiles like the kind the Triple Threats used, while expensive, could be bought by anyone with the yuans.  But Shin was covering up the fact that he HAD seen and knew about which car and which members of the Triple Threat Triad had knocked Mako off his bike. He wasn’t a snitch. He wouldn’t tell... even if he didn’t approve. He’d never liked the fact that Mako had gone pig-dog and never would, but...; That didn’t mean he still didn’t have a bit of a soft spot for the kid. Even if he’d never admit to anyone.

Shin almost inhaled his cigarette. Not the smoke. The actual cigarette. He couldn't begin to fathom why the Avatar was in THIS part of town. He spit out his cigarette and stomped on it and tried to look casual. "If it isn't the Avatar herself, one of my favorite people. Favorite Avatar, in fact. Hands-down, you are the best." He presented his most charming smile. He wasn't getting his hopes up, but he wasn't going to pass an opportunity to possibly get his bending back. "How can I help you?"

“Already with the flattery, you must be in a good mood.” Korra muttered as she watched the former waterbender carefully, raising an eyebrow as he mozied on over, turning on the charm and trying to sweet talked her. She could have sworn her eyebrow went so high that became one with her hairline at some point. But aside from that she only crossed her arms over her chest as he inched closer, she was here on business and if anyone could answer her question he could.

“I over heard a certain tall, emerald eyed, black dragon saying that you owed her some money.” Korra chuckled softly, before whistling loudly into the air. Within seconds, Naga, the giant polar bear dog appeared from a nearby alley, standing behind her. “I just wanted to come by and see how that was coming along..”

“I’m in a great mood,” Shin said, smoothly. “Why wouldn’t I be? You could say you’ve made my day. And hey, y’know, you could be making my life here in a moment by giving me my bending back... who knows, right?” He watched Korra carefully, then paused a moment when she mentioned the Black Dragon triad. He cleared his throat and gave Korra a questioning look. “The Avatar, master of all elements and goodness, is doing favors for a triad now? I must really be out of the loop. When did this happen?” Of course, it was a good avoidance tactic, too. He wasn’t about to touch on any question that involved him owing money to someone if he could help it.

Bolin and Mako where having a bit of trouble adapting to life on Air Nomad Island, they needed cash.  Mako wasn’t bringing in enough cash for the rent on the room so Bolin decided to help.  He had found the guy who had given him a “Deal”  and he worked out something with him along the lines of guard work. “Shut it Shin.  I’m just trying to make ends meet.”

“Sounds to me like somebody’s in a bad mood,” Shin said, raising an eyebrow. He tried to remember when was the last time Bolin told him to “shut it.” Shin couldn’t remember, then again, he’d probably lost that memory at some point to the copious amounts of alcohol he drank. 

“You ain’t still sore about that whole business with the Equalists, right? Because look, if I had known what was going to happen that night, I would’ve kept you out of it. Fuck, I would’ve kept myself out of it. I might occasionally wish this on my worst enemy, but I certainly wouldn’t wish it on you, Bolin. Anyway, it’s a good thing you’re here, I’ve been meaning to apologize.” The first part was the truth; the part about apologizing? Not so much. “So, I’m sorry. Let’s let bygones be bygones. And in the meantime, maybe Shady Shin here can give you a hand. I know all about trying to make ends meet.”

“Well, I guess job satisfaction is important,” Shin said, blowing on his coffee before drinking it. He was glad she seemed so confident that his memories were going to come back. For whatever reason, he had a hard time feeling that confidence himself. Shin watched her a moment, then a puzzled expression crossed his face. “You’re one of my closest friends, and I don’t talk to you about my friends or family?” That seemed odd. He wondered why he would do that. He looked uncomfortable with himself for a moment. He glanced back at her. That really didn’t seem fair. Maybe he had good reasons for it? He hoped so. “I’m sure I have a good reason for it,” he said, echoing his thoughts and trying to reassure her.

Inia looked at him and saw the unease cross his face. She gave a reassuring smile and nodded. “I know you do. I believe it’s for protection.” She knew it was mainly protection for himself because getting close was dangerous. Finishing her  coffee she set it next to her and looked over him.  “Do you want to try to smoke? I’ll bring you the ashtray if so.”She didn’t want to do anything that might cause him to hurt his head again.

Shin nodded his head. “Yeah, maybe it’ll help me calm down.” He grabbed one of the cigarettes and fumbled with the lighter for a moment before lighting the cigarette. He stuck it between his lips and inhaled slowly, closing his eyes. “Yeah, that does feel better.” He opened his eyes again and looked at Inia. “So, uh... what kind of person am I? I guess I’ll probably figure that out, but it’s just really weird not knowing who I am.”

“You do love your job.” She stood to go refill the coffee . Once she’d warmed and refilled the coffee she  sat down on the coffee table to look at him. He called her doll all the time. Honestly, she didn’t particularly care for the moniker, he called all of the women doll but at least it was better than other things he could call a woman.  Her smile faded and she nodded solemnly. 

“They’ll come back though, I just meant don’t hurt yourself trying to force them.” Would he ever like what he remembered? Her heart hurt when he asked about family or friends. She didn’t know of any .. he never talked to her about friends or family. He’d probably have some of his regular hits that would be curious to where he was and wait.. two toed ping was something of a friend? Work acquaintance maybe but that was a fs much of a friend that she knew he had. “Some you work with, but you keep most of the things like that to yourself.”

Inia smiled softly to him though it didn’t reach her eyes. “I’d prefer it if you did, but …. you’d never consider it.” She said gently as she watched him very closely. She sipped at the broth then the coffee she wondered herself what happened. Was he working? Was he mugged? Was it a hooker deal gone wrong? Was it some broad… or man he was bedding that got pissed off for some reason? Was it gang related? Was he drinking at a bar and get into a fight?She honestly didn’t know and that worried her even more.

Seeing him pull the lube out of his pocket she bloshed blood red and frowned looking away not looking at it or him until he spoke to her agai.n. “Yes, I’ll call them for you. You just worry about getting some rest and healing. But for now you should eat. Try not to worry about work or your memories. They’ll come back. I’ll call a healer first thing in the morning.” She said gently. Yes his memories would come back….how upset was he going to be with her when they did.

“Am I that much of a workaholic?” Shin asked. “I’m pretty sure I don’t like pain. I wonder why I’d take such a dangerous job?” He shook his head a little bit. He noticed how red she was in the face and couldn’t help but smile. She really was very pretty. The redness in her cheeks complimented her golden eyes perfectly.

“You’re a doll,” Shin said, relieved that she was going to call for him. He frowned a bit when she told him not to worry about his memories. “It’s hard not to. I feel like my whole life is missing.” He gave a sigh and took some more sips of his broth. He paused a moment and looked to Inia. “Do I have any friends or family that might get worried about me?”

Inia frowned a little deeper as she watched him. She needed to call a healer in.  Something was wrong- she didn’t want him to not know who he was or anything about himself. It hurt her to see that. Taking a deep breath she tried to think of how to answer each of his questions .”We don’t fight a lot, but we have our share and yes there are mixed signals but I’m okay with whatever it was.”  What it was… what was it exactly? Oh she knew what it was a convenience and a booty call… but thinking of it like that made her feel sick with herself. “I mainly do portraits..” She said moving on to the next subject quickly enough. “But I’ve done scenery as well. I do pinups as my specialty. That’s … tasteful nude photography. ‘‘ She explained in case he wasn’t familiar with that term. 

“No not a nurse… just trained in first aid.” She said with a smile before the smile faded. What did she tell him about why he got hurt so much. How would it affect him to learn that he was a gang member…. and not even a high ranking one. He was a mook, a peeon.. he was as disposable as they came. IF she could get him away from the life she would. And she’d do so in a heart beat. But in his right mind he’d never leave. It was comfortable and familiar, not to mention leaving the triple threats meant death.

Battling with herself, she didn’t know what to tell him. She took a deep breath and looked over at him. “You have dangerous career, and getting hurt on the job is one of the hazards.”

Shin’s expression became thoughtful. She was okay with whatever it was? It sounded like they had a complicated relationship. Maybe he didn’t have all of his memories, but from what he had seen so far, he couldn’t really see why. Inia seemed very nice, and she had probably just saved his life.  Portraits. Scenery. Pin-ups. That seemed like a very interesting combination. Maybe they got into fights about that last one? He gave another grimace. He really had to try not to think too hard about these things. 

“You sound very talented,” Shin commented. The broth was really good. Maybe he couldn’t remember if it was the best thing he had ever tasted, but right now, it was the best thing he had ever tasted. Photography and first aid. He wondered what other talents she might have, too. He frowned a moment when she mentioned that he had a dangerous career. Maybe that was another thing they didn’t see eye-to-eye on? “I should probably think about changing careers, then,” Shin mumbled. He wanted to ask more about this career that he had, but it occurred to him that tonight, he probably hadn’t been out at work. Because surely, his co-workers would have seen him and helped him, right? His eyebrows furrowed. “Hmmm. Do I work at night? I don’t think I was at work. I woke up in a ditch... like this. Maybe I was mugged?” He paused a moment, then his eyes widened. Well, one way to check for sure, right? He started patting himself down and pulling things out of his pockets. The first thing he pulled out was a pack of cigarettes and a lighter. He tilted his head slightly.

“I smoke?” He looked at the cigarettes thoughtfully. Y’know, it made sense, maybe. He was feeling rather jittery. Maybe he needed to smoke a cigarette. Then, he pulled out a set of keys. House keys? Car keys, maybe? He set them on the table. The next thing he pulled out was a tube of lube, and this was the most puzzling thing. Why did he keep lube in his pockets? It seemed like a rather odd thing to carry around. He glanced at Inia momentarily as if hoping she could shed some light on the subject. Then, he wondered if he wanted her to shed light on this particular subject. It was just so... bizarre. He shoved the lube back in his pocket. The one thing he didn’t find was a wallet... or any sign of yuans.

“Either I’m very broke or I got robbed.” He was completely unaware of the fact that he was also missing his knife as well. He frowned. “I don’t know if I have work tomorrow, but... I can’t go in like this. I don’t even remember what I used to do. I’ll have to call in or take leave or something. Would you be able to help me get in contact with them?”
