I am not unaware of the negatives of Biden's presidency, and I am not trying to elide or forgive them. I'm reblogging posts about the Biden administration because I think it's really important that potential voters in the US realize that there is, in fact, a very big difference between the two parties, and voting for Biden is not just damage control--it actually does good. It's okay, you can actually feel a little excited about making meaningful progress, and not just hold your nose.
He's been very unflashy. He's not a great leader, he's not charismatic and he knows it, but he's an adroit politician and administrator, and he's been getting things done. Letting Trump win at this point would be tantamount to throwing the entire country on the bonfire. It's not a choice between bad and bad, it's a choice between meaningful, if imperfect, progress and fucking doom.
I keep doing it because I don't hear any buzz about the real progress that's happening, and that's frusterating.
I keep doing it because fear isn't actually all that effective to get people to do something. But I just want to be screaming "What the actual f*ck!" when folks act like the dude who sent unmarked vans to scoop up Black Lives Matter protesters and stans Andrew *Trail of Tears* Jackson is the equivalent of the dude lowering the price of prescriptions drugs and standing on the picket line with auto workers. Mainly by giving Biden somewhat more power than he actually has.
I keep doing it because I regularly volunteer with a marginalized group who are very aware of what's at stake.
Some things Biden and Congress have done:
Pardoned federal prisoners convicted of marijuana possession offenses
Signed into law a bipartisan infrastructure bill for road and bridge repair, public transportation, railway repair and improvements with part of that budget going to expanding high speed rail
Same bill covers improvements to clean water, maintain and improving power infrastructure, and broadband internet expansion.
Added 14 million jobs and lowered the unemployment rate
The American Rescue Plan ($ to stay home during the pandemic)
First major gun legislation in decades
Inflation Reduction Act, which includes $ for reducing of greenhouse emissions, $ for IRS so they aren't so overworked and understaffed or working with ancient equipment, a corporate tax increase, a lower cap for prescriptions for people on Medicare
Appointed more federal judges in his first year than any president since Reagan, 80% of whom are women and 53% of whom are people of color
Re-froze federal executions
Re-joined the Paris Accords
Nominated and appointed Kentaji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court
Significantly lowered gas prices
Ended the Muslim Ban
Incorporated undocumented immigrants in the census (which is sort of a mixed bag, I know)
Revoked the permit for Keystone XL pipeline
Banned discrimination based on sexual identity and orientation
I really think people have forgotten just how bad things were under the Trump Administration. Literally every day there was news about some service being cut or someone terrible appointed somewhere they shouldn't be or what have you. He constantly flirted with WW3 and military dictatorship. It was such a blur of badness that there aren't big standouts for people to point to to make him "the XYZ president." it was everything. all the time. Why do we not remember this.
Remember how everyone learned Zelenskyys name? he wasn't the presiden of Ukraine standing up against a longshot defense against a Russian invasion. He was that guy that Trump tried to extort in order to get blackmail against Joe Biden.
Can anyone name the current secretary of education? I can't. But I can list the shitty things Betsy DeVos did
He was extorting Zelenskyy by threatening aid to Ukraine.
He assassinated an Iranian general. Luckily the Iranians are smarter than him and didn’t start a war over it.
He move the US Embassy in Israel to Jerusalem.
He started a trade war with China for no reason.
He was just constantly picking stupid fights with everyone.
Just a ton of stupidity internationally, in addition to heinous domestic policies like trying to deliberately destroy the Postal Service, reversing tons of anti discrimination rules, just axing regulations with no regard what they were for.
And through it all, the President’s latest Tweet was prime time news every single night.
Not only can we not go back to this, that's actually a best case scenario under a second Trump presidency.
Worst case scenario is that he greenlights Project 2025 and we just literally all live in an actual fascist dictatorship.
Vote your conscience in the primary. Vote for the imperfect Democrats in the general election, because the other option is to never get to vote again. If you're a minority like me, probably because you're dead.
It is going to be worse if he and the Republicans win again. He has said straight out one of his first orders of business is concentration camps.
Also I don't have the spoons to summarize project 2025 in detail for those who don't know, but "Turn the US into a fascist dictatorship and begin multiple genocides in earnest" is a pretty good summary.
Please remember Hitler was originally considered a joke of a candidate and won the second time around.
We can't let history repeat.
The good news is we can win! Last election everything was stacked up for the Republicans to gain a sweeping majority....
But they didn't! Because we voted!

as someone who has been involved in union organizing through my dad's union since i was literally in second grade, the way that people on tumblr think unions work drives me literally insane
unions do so much more than just strike. unions bargain. unions sit in at meetings with upper management. unions help people navigate benefits. unions coordinate aid drives for disabled members. my union ran a donations campaign for me for the interim between the end of my allotted paid leave and my disability claim
"unionize your workplace" means so much more than "talk to your coworkers about striking." you gotta actively know what a union is and what a union isn't before you can form one. calls to unionize should lead to more people learning their rights and learning how unions work, and coordinating with orgs like seiu and the teamsters and the aft (and if you don't know what those are, look them up).
My union found me a legal expert to help me check over my last redundancy settlement for free, provided private medical cover whilst I was unemployed, and negotiated a good deal on cheap insurance for their members. It is so much more than strikes.

A man with a history of "honorary" membership in the Klu Klux Klan not only managed to make it on the unofficial ballot to be the Republican nominee for Missouri governor, but may even appear atop the official ballot when GOP voters vote in the primary this August.

A 2022 article on the Anti-Defamation League's website shows McClanahan next to a man in white robes as both men give what appear to be Nazi salutes in front of a burning cross some time around 2019.
The ADL article claims that the organization's Center on Extremism has been tracking McClanahan for years, as he has affiliated with various white supremacist and Christian identity groups.
"Hey @MissouriGOP I just learned the candidate listed first on our primary ballot for Governor is a cross-burning KKK member who ran for US Senate 2 years ago and freely admits his KKK membership & white supremacist beliefs," Dogan wrote, adding in a subsequent tweet that he hoped the party would reject McClanahan's filing fee, calling him a "racist loser."

In an unusual legal strategy for a man alleging he'd been defamed by assertions he is aligned with antisemites and white supremacists, McClanahan says in his own court filings that he is a "Pro-White man, horseman, politician, political prisoner-activist who is dedicated to traditional Christian values." He also says that he has had "honorary memberships" in the Knight's Party Ku Klux Klan and the League of the South.
He also writes he "did attend in 2019 a private religious Christian Identity Cross lighting ceremony falsely described as a cross burning."
